Dr. Komal Rao (previously Komal V Sharda) is a Jeet Kune Do Instructor[1] and one of the few women mixed martial arts competitors from India[2][3]. She is also one of the few women in the world to have fought a male in a Pro MMA event.[4] [5][6]
MMA Accomplishments[edit]
She began her study of Jeet Kune Do under Seema Rao and Deepak Rao, pioneer of JKD in India and has certified Full Instructor under them. She was certified as Full Instructor[7] by Richard Bustillo, well known original student of Bruce Lee, making her one of the handful women Instructors in the world[8]. She is a Fifth degree Blackbelt under UCCA organization.[9]
She is an MMA club owner, MMA coach and competitor from India[10]. She participated in Young Blood Night 9[11][12] and [13]was slotted to fight Elke Beinwachs on 3 June 2017 in the 52 kg category. However when Elke didn't turn up for the fight, Komal agreed to fight Nikes Agarwal from Guardian gym Germany in the 60kg category[14]. She won by submission in the second round using a rear naked choke and is the only Indian woman to have fought a male in an MMA cage fight[15][16]. She is ranked 21nd in the Pro MMA women fighter[17].
Other Accomplishments[edit]
She is the Deputy Director of an NGO Unarmed Commando Combat Academy[18] [19] [20]. And the owner of Academy of Combat Fitness[21] in Mumbai.
As a healthcare professional, Dr. Komal Rao has lectured with the perspective of Jeet Kune Do to help individuals improve their understanding and management of health[22]. She is actively involved in empowering women[23] [24] to feel confident and safe using self-defense skills.
Actively involved in ventures of knowledge sharing, she has written the preface [25] for King Sperm[26], a book authored by Seema Rao.
She has also acted in Hathapayi[27] Indian MMA movie with screen name Kayra.
