Michael "Maicon" Willian Costa is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist who competes in the strawweight and flyweight divisions. A professional MMA competitor since 2006, Costa has spent the majority of his career in Brazil, mostly notably for Shooto.

Mixed Martial Arts career[edit]

Background and early career[edit]

"Maicon" Costa stands at 5 ft 5 in (1.65 m) and competes at strawweight (115 lb).[2]

Costa began his career in October 2006, winning via triangle choke.[3] This was followed up in March 2007 with another win, this time by unanimous decision.[4] After taking a year out of the sport, Costa returned and defeated Siai Carrasco via rear naked choke.[5]

Shooto[edit]

In June 2008, Costa made his Shooto debut against Rafael Lima, in the opening bout at Shooto - Brazil 7. Costa finished his opponent in 1:14 of the opening round, via armbar.[6]

Costa then faced the #1 ranked flyweight fighter Jussier da Silva[7] at Shooto - Brazil 9. Formiga was able to take a close[8] unanimous decision victory after three rounds,[9] handing Costa his first professional loss.

After a further submission victory, at Shooto - Brazil 12,[10] Costa faced Alexandre Pantoja. Once again, Costa was on the wrong end of a judges decision, losing a close decision[8] after three rounds.[11]

Shooto then wanted to establish their own flyweight (115 lb) champion, in addition to the Shooto World Champion Rambaa Somdet. The promotion then set up an eight-man, two-event grand prix to decide the champion.[8] Costa decided to apply, considering that 115 lb was his natural weight, as opposed to the 123 lb he had been competing at previously.[8]

Costa faced Pedro Mascote in the opening round, defeating him unanimous decision, before facing Evandro dos Santos in the semi-final. Costa then defeated dos Santos via armbar after just 45 seconds.[12]

The two tournament wins resulted in Costa reaching the final. The winner of the final will be crowned the inaugural Shooto 115 lb South American Champion and will take place at Shooto - Brazil 20. Costa faced Lincon de Sa for the championship.[13] The winner of the bout was expected to face Rambaa Somdet for the Shooto Flyweight (115 lb) World Championship.[13] Costa lost via close split decision.

He then rematched Jussier da Silva, who was coming off a win over world-ranked Mamoru Yamaguchi. The bout, which was for Silva's Shooto South American 123lb title,[1] saw da Silva dominate en route to a rear naked choke victory late in the second round.[1]

Following the loss, Costa won his next fight via rear naked choke, before dropping a subsequent bout via decision
