Konstantin Ivanovich Olmezov (December 1, 1995[1] - March 20, 2022) was a Ukrainian mathematician and poet who committed suicide on March 20, 2022 after he attempted to return to Ukraine during the Russian invasion.

He was employed by the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology as a professional mathematician for his expertise in combinatorial arithmetic.[2]

Biography[edit]

Konstantin was born on December 1, 1995 in Donetsk, Ukraine. Konstantin attended the Donetsk National University[3] in which he studied mathematics.[4] He graduated in 2016. He moved to Moscow in 2018 to study additive combinatorics.

After graduating from university he moved to Kyiv[5]. In 2018 he moved to Moscow to study additive combinatorics and entered the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology master's program. Parallel to his studies, he worked at the Combinatorial and Geometric Structures Laboratory of the Institute. He was a specialist in combinatorial arithmetic and in the structure of convex sequences. He lived in Dolgoprudny.

Death[edit]

On February 26, 2022, Olmezov attempted to leave Russia. In his own words, he was going to "defend his country [Ukraine], protect it from someone who wanted to take it from me." However, he was detained while boarding an international bus, and on February 28 he was arrested for 15 days under the article "minor hooliganism" (20.1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). The formal reason was "violation of public order".

According to his own statements, while in prison, Olmezov made “at least ten [suicide] attempts in seven different ways”.

On March 20, 2022 Konstantin committed suicide in Moscow after he attempted to move back to Ukraine to see family after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Although, the Federal Security Service detained him for 15 days and was the reason Konstantin took his own life, reported by his Telegram.[6][7]
