In 2011, he completed a Master of Arts in Directing, Screenwriting, and Producing at the Northern Media School of Sheffield Hallam University (UK), with a scholarship from the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).[2]
Film work
He is the director, screenwriter and co-producer of the feature film The Big Father (2023), which participated in international festivals across America, Europe and Asia. The film had its world premiere in Los Angeles, at the Culver City Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best Film, and was an official selection at the 36th Panorama of European Cinema (international competition section), where it was nominated for the FIPRESCI and Best Film awards.[3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
He was honored with the Best Film Award at the Ely Film, Art & Music Festival (USA) and the Best First Feature Film Award at the Stockholm City Film Festival, while also receiving distinctions at festivals in Hong Kong, Israel, Singapore, and Bhutan. He received Best Film nominations at festivals in Italy (Ariano International Film Festival), San Francisco (San Francisco Greek Film Festival), Paris (South East European Film Festival), Los Angeles (Brightlight Film Festival), Venezuela (Festival FINDECOIN), Argentina (Santa Cruz International Film Festival) and Ecuador (Portojevo Film Festival).[10][11][12][13][14]
Stragalinos has also directed award-winning short films. Check In (2018) received best film and best horror film awards at festivals in Brazil, India, Italy, and the United Kingdom, and was also honored for its direction at both Greek and international festivals.[15][16][17]
The films De Architectura (2011), Invidia (2010) and Sto Kentro (2013) were screened and competed at festivals in Drama, Thessaloniki, London, Rome, Berlin, Bucharest and other cities, receiving distinctions and nominations.[18][19][20][21][22]
He has also directed documentaries for ERT (the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation) and the Hellenic Parliament Channel, and has worked as an assistant director on feature films.[23]
His work is marked by social and dystopian themes, while his style has been noted for elements of surrealism, irony, and political satire. Ninos Mikelides (Enetpress), a leading figure in Greek film criticism and history described The Big Father as infused with “irony, dark humor, a Buñuel-like tone, and a Cassavetes-like perspective,” attributing to the filmmaker qualities such as “honesty, directness, inventiveness, drive, and passion.” He identified multiple thematic layers in the film: “Corruption and the games of power and control, the conflict between the genders, the role and manipulation of corporations, and more broadly, the workings of a repressive system surrendered to the free market—even the role and manipulation of cinema itself.”[24][25]
Alexis Dermentzoglou (KEMES - Center for Cinema Studies and Research) described the film as having "a surreal underground dimension and a nightmarish futuristic forecast reminiscent of Marco Ferreri." [26]
The newspaper Efimerida ton Syntakton (Newspaper of the Editors) described The Big Father as “a highly promising Greek debut.” Dimitris Panagopoulos portrayed the director as a creator with “the ability to combine multiple genres (black comedy, drama, psychological thriller), constructing a dystopian cinematic universe that transcends the narrow confines of the country and has the potential to be placed anywhere.”[27]
Stratos Kersanidis (I Epohi) referred to “dynamic direction, pacing, and an original film that speaks bluntly.” He also pointed out that the director, against the backdrop of the economic crisis, “refers to the nightmare of foreclosures, the manipulation exercised by social media, and to culture, which is always the first victim of public spending cuts,” concluding that the film highlights how “all these external factors operate destructively on human relationships and family bonds.”[28]
Angelos Polydoros (myfilm.gr) described the film as “a harsh satire of television reality shows and of the people who, out of necessity, resort to them by degrading themselves,” and ranked it among the three best Greek films of 2024.[29]
