Bojana Kostka (Kruševac, July 24, 1979) is a Serbian nail designer, specializing in extreme nail shapes and art.[1][2][3] Bojana developed her own Kostka Nail System cosmetic brand.[4] She is a member of the World Nail Association, one of the 19 holders of a Triple A certificate for professional nail technician, and an international educator.[5]

Beginnings[edit]
Kostka was born in 1979 in Kruševac, Serbia. She started her career in the nail industry in 1999, when she opened a nail salon called Charisma.[6][7][8] While working in the salon, Kostka trained more than 500 people to work in her salon, who afterward launched their own nail businesses.[9]
Extreme forms[edit]
In 2006, Kostka began designing her first nail shapes that would later be known as Extreme forms.[10][11] The nail shapes were characteristic due to their length, sometimes exceeding 30 centimetres,[12] and designs contained skulls, handmade details, and jewellery.[13] This style developed into the Stilleto Edge, a long, three-sided prism shaped nail with a sharp edge.[14][15] The initial reception to these designs were mostly negative,[16] but with time attracted an avant-garde audience.[7][17]
Recognition and competitions[edit]
Kostka's work has been featured on the cover of international nail magazines.[18][19] She has won first place at more than 50 nail competitions.[20][8]
In 2013, she took part in a "Magic & Nails" competition for nail design, where she won the trophy for Best Master in Serbia.[9] Shortly after that, she stopped working with customers and turned to nail art, developing her technique, and designing new forms. In 2011, she patented her first author forms — Stiletto Edge, Triangle, and Dragon.[9] She also began travelling and teaching internationally.[13][21][22] In 2018, Kostka invented four new forms: Lilith, Dagger, Edgeit, and Razor, and another seven in 2019 — Nergal, Elatus, Behemoth, Abaddon, Kraken, Kiara, and Astaroth.[23] Astaroth was premiered on the cover of the February 2019 edition of UK nail magazine Scratch.[9][24] One of her students, Hungarian nail artist Katalin Szikszai,[25] became the world champion after winning the 5th World Nail Championship in 2020.[26]
After winning first place at the Zagreb Fair (Croatian: Zagrebački velesajam), Kostka was invited by organizers to design and organize its first international competition dedicated to nail design.[7][8] She was the main organizer and juror at competitions organized during 2015, 2016, and 2017.[27] She has judged other competitions, including the 2015 World Championship in Velden, Austria,[28] where she was a member of the jury in the Sectio Aurea category.[29]
Casting technique[edit]
In parallel with the new extreme forms, Kostka also developed the technique of modeling three-dimensional elements, which she later used as nail decorations, parts of nails, and today she builds complete nails with this technique called casting.[23]
As the process of creating and decorating nails can take up to 20 hours, she switched to creating molds that can be used to duplicate the same design for many nails.[30] This doesn't require the model to be present — the design can be finished and then placed on the model's hand and, if removed carefully, cast nails can be reused.[31][27]
Kostka Nail System[edit]
In 2017, Kostka founded her own brand focused on gels for building extreme shapes, handmade accessories, and salon furniture. They also offer products for studio work.[32]
In February 2021, Kostka organized a new international competition dedicated to Extreme Forms, "World's Most Creative Nail Artist".[33] The topic of the competition was "black diamond".[34] There was no participation fee — contestants were just invited to donate money to the animal rights organization "Levijatan",[20][35] while the prize for the winner was in the form of an educational seminar.[36][37]
In June 2022, Bojana was named one of the 100 most successful women entrepreneurs in Serbia. The award was given by the Post of Serbia, which announced a competition for the most successful women entrepreneurs during March and April that year.[38] The selection committee included a representative of Banca Intesa Saopaolo Draginja Đurić, the president of the executive board of Dunav osiguranje Ivana Soković, and the president of the commission, the Minister of Trade, Services and Telecommunications, Tatjana Matić.[39] Bojana, the owner and designer of the international brand Kostka Nail System, which today operates successfully in 14 EU countries, USA, UK and Serbia, managed to be on the list of 100 most successful women entrepreneurs who will get support from the Post of Serbia and the Serbian Government to promote their services and products.[40] The support includes favorable contracts for the distribution and various forms of advertising and promotion.[39]
