Kottapurath (K.N.) Vinod (Born December 20, 1958) is an Indian-American chef based in the Washington DC Metro area.[1]. He is known for his appearance on the Food Network television series Beat Bobby Flay.
Early life and education
Vinod was born in Coimbatore,Tamil Nadu in India to K.K. Narayanan (Kottapurath Kunjimaman Narayanan) a World War Veteran and C.A. Pushpavathy (Chillikkattil Aiyappan Pushpavathy). A native of the city of Kerala, K.N. Vinod studied at the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology and at the Culinary Institute of America. Through professional training he developed a signature style for melding classic Indian flavors with French technique.
Career
Vinod started his career in high-end hotel and restaurant venues, cooking for celebrities and diplomats. At the Hotel Ashok in New Delhi, India, he cooked for several world leaders including Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. After emigrating to the United States, in 1992 Vinod opened Bombay Bistro restaurant in Rockville, Maryland and Indique in Washington D.C. in 2002.
The chef has served as a judge in various culinary competitions and demonstrated Indian flavors and technique for the Smithsonian Institution Resident Associate program as well as at the James Beard House in New York City. He has appeared on Fox TV, Channel 9 WUSA, Channel 7 WJLA, and TV Asia.
Beat Bobby Flay
In 2016, Vinod appeared on the Food Network show Beat Bobby Flay in an episode entitled "Live From the Food Carpet"[2] with a Fish Curry Challenge but did not win.
Family
Vinod married his wife Nisha in 1987. They have a son Rahul and a daughter Rathi.
Philanthropy
Vinod is a member of José Andrés World Central Kitchen[3], a nonprofit organization that mobilizes to bring disaster food aid to communities after cataclysmic events. He also serves on the Board of Directors of DC Central Kitchen[4], a Washington D.C. nonprofit that rescues food to provide meals to food insecure individuals as well as job training in the culinary arts.
