José Krakover (November 2, 1880 - April 28, 1957) was one of the first European pioneers who introduced the photographic profession in Argentina.
Photographic reporter and photogravure worked as a journalist, always linked to the newspaper "'El Argentino" and in his last years in "'El Plata" in the city of La Plata, of which he was Head of the respective section, until retiring in the year 1953, but without completely abandoning the activity of his vocation since he continued in the office as technician of the Municipality of La Plata, Argentine Republic.
José Krakover began the use of magnesium for professional purposes, around 1930. Said magnesium, pulverized on a support that was lit with a detonator, produced a flash of bright light and a cloud of caustic smoke, using it in its time, as a flash.
Biography[edit]
Born in the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the city of Tarnów, in the year 1880, José, son of Jacob Krakover and Mina Kuperman, began as a graphic reporter at the service of the Russian empire documenting the Russian-Japanese War (1904) and forced by the political, social and military situation of the time, he decides with his partner to embark on new paths towards the Americas. Together with his cameras and luggage, he arrived in Argentina as part of a crew of 2,000 immigrants who had set sail from the port of London. They reside in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina where they establish their first address at 2073 Camargo Street in the City of Buenos Aires.
José, once established, begins to exercise his profession as a professional photographer, having brought his own cameras, very advanced for the time. He is quickly recognized and begins to gain popularity among his peers, for his skills both in the photographic exhibition (magnesium flash were used whose ignition was caused manually to illuminate), graphic notes, engraving workshop, as well as retouching from the same. Later they lived in the Campana city, where around 1915 he established a photography workshop, painting workshop and pencil retouching, LA ARTÍSTICA, at 279 Rivadavia street in that town. In 1920, already settled in Ciudad de La Plata, he began to work at "Foto El Arte" and temporarily set up "Foto Select", a shop on Calle 1 between 60 and 61 in the city. He is an active member of El ARGENTINO Newspaper,[1] where he entered as a photographer to later hold the position of Head of the photoengraving workshop.
José Krakover died of a terminal illness on April 28, 1957, at the General San Martín Institute, in the city of La Plata.

Public Recognition[edit]
In commemoration of the day of the photographer in Argentina and Latin America,[2] the Museum Evita Workers of La Plata,[3] held on September 24, 2021, a public act where a painting with the photographs of the accreditation plates as press workers (graphic reporters) delivered in the year 1951 was placed on its walls in tribute to Krakover Jose and Krakover Boris in recognition of their trajectory as Buenos Aires photojournalists.
