Kris Tomasson was born in 1967 to parents Marlene and ballet dancer Helgi Tómasson[1], is an American industrial designer and responsible for Design at car brand NIO.[2]
Since joining NIO in 2015, he has led the design of its brand and car line up including the most recent ET7[3], ET5, ES7 and the NIO Eve[4], the first NIO concept car.
Early Life and Education[edit]
Kris Tomasson grew up in New York with his parents. He studied transportation design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California as well as at a satellite school in Switzerland and graduated with honors.[5]
Career[edit]
After graduation, he worked as a designer at various companies, From 1992 to 1998 for the first time for BMW, then as design director, Innovation of the Arnell Group, for the Coca-Cola Company (Global Design Director), Gulfstream Aerospace, Ford and from April 2014 to May 2015 again for BMW, where he was responsible for the exterior body design of the electric i-models[6] In June 2015, he moved from BMW[7] to the Chinese start-up company Next EV (NIO)[8] after a three and half hour meeting with William Li at the Reitschule Café on Munich’s Königin Avenue. Kris Tomasson became the vice president Design of NIO's Munich design studio. [9] located in Munich/Bogenhausen, production of the cars is in China.[10]
Since joining NIO he has been responsible for development of the brand including NIO's Logo[11] revealed at the Saatchi Gallery and its range of electric cars. These include the

Awards[edit]
Kris Tomasson has a won a number of awards for his designs. The NIO ES6 has been awarded the top mark for vehicle design in the 2020 Automotive Brand Contest[12]. The ES6 took first place in the exterior premium brand category. His ET7[13] has secured a Good Design Award won a Red Dot Award in 2021 and the ET5 was a winner in 2022 [14]
