Krishna Ballesh (born Krishna Ballesh Bhajantri) is an Indian classical Hindustani shehnai player.[1] He is also an Patiala gharana Hindustani vocalist, a thumri, sufi-qawwali, ghazal and a playback singer-musician.[2][3]
Krishna is a "B. High" grade and frequently performs for Doordarshan Kendra and All India Radio (AIR) of Prasar Bharati.[4] He is a computer science software engineer.[5]
He is second son and disciple of shehnai expert S Ballesh Bhajantri.[6] He is the direct student of shehnai master Bismillah Khan.[7][8] He is a senior student of Hindustani vocalist Rashid Khan (musician).[9]
He was awarded Kalaimamani, Tamilnadu state’s highest civilian award in 2020, by the Government of Tamil Nadu in the field of Arts.[10][11]
Early life and education
Krishna was born to S. Ballesh and Ratna along with his two brothers, Prakash and Shivanand Ballesh.[12]
He received initial training in shehnai and hindustani classical vocal from his grandparents Pt Sanna Bharamana Bhajantri and Yellamma, both were accomplished musicians. A strict disciplinarian, Bharmanna would insist on voice training and practising just a single note daily for hours, his disciplined training shows in his easy mastery of soft singing, taan and layakaari[13][14] He later learned music under the guidance of D.P Hiremath in gwalior and kirana gharanas.[15]
Musical career
He received higher-level professional training from his father Ballesh.[16][17][18] He learnt Benaras gharana shehnai playing style from Bismillah Khan in Varanasi when he was 13years.[19][20][21]
Khan's younger son Nazim Hussain a tabla player has accompanied Krishna in many concerts.[22][23][24][25]

He learned the advanced techniques of Rampur Sahaswana gharana from his hindustani vocal master Rashid Khan, and has occasionally given vocal support for his concerts.[26][27][28]

Krishna is co-founder of Tansen Academy of Music School,[29][30][31][32] main branch located in chennai, other branches in bangalore, hyderabad and coimbatore.[33][34][35] He and his two brothers teaches Hindustani classical music voice training, playback singing, soft singing technique and voice culture [36][37][38][39] for more than 500 students in the academy.[40][41][42] He has founded music festivals,[43] notably Ras Barse Utsav,[44][45][46][47][48] Ganayogi Sangeet Utsav,[49] Taan Utsav, [50][51] Guru Samarpan[52] and organizes every year in tribute to their gurus.[53]
Awards and recognition
- In 2021, Krishna was conferred with Ustad Bismillah Khan Kala Ratna Samman (Joint Award) by India tourism varanasi, Government of India and by Ustad Bismillah Khan's family members.[54][55]
- In 2021, he was conferred with Vocational excellence award for outstanding service in the field of music by Rotary International club district 3232.[56][57]
- In 2020, he was conferred with Tamil Nadu state's highest civilian award,[58][59] the Kalaimamani by chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami by Tamil Nadu government’s Iyal isai nataka mandram, for his contribution to Indian classical music and for promoting shehnai instrument in the field of Art.[60][61][62]
- In 2015, he was honoured with Sundri samrat Pandit Sidaram Jadhav Yuva Puraskar award in Solapur.[63][64]
