Kristen Crowell

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Kristen Crowell is an American political activist and political consultant in Wisconsin and Illinois.[1] She led the labor union-backed political organization We Are Wisconsin that supported Democratic Party candidates including Tom Barrett during the 2012 Wisconsin recall elections.[2] Crowell served as spokesperson for the group during both the recall[3] and the general elections.[4]

Career[edit]

Crowell heads United Working Families, a Chicago left-wing political organization made up of community groups and labor unions including the Chicago Teachers Union. The group's aims include offering an alternative to the policies of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.[5]

She previously headed the A Better Illinois coalition, composed of community organizations, labor unions, and progressive groups that attempted to change the state income tax structure in the 2014 legislative session and referendum election. The coalition was led by progressive groups, including the 501(c)(4) Citizen Action/Illinois, and labor unions.[6]

The coalition sought to change the Illinois income tax system from a proportional tax to a system with lower rates on lower incomes and higher rates on higher incomes.[7] The effort stalled in 2014 when the state legislature failed to advance legislation to put the question onto a referendum ballot. [8]

In 2012, she led We Are Wisconsin, a union-supported organization that supported Democratic candidates Tom Barrett for Wisconsin Governor, Tammy Baldwin for U.S. Senate, and Barack Obama for President of the United States.[9]

Prior to joining We Are Wisconsin, Crowell worked for Progressive Majority Wisconsin.[10]
