Kunal Shah (born 20 May 1983) is an Indian serial entrepreneur, and the founder of Cred (company) and Freecharge.[1] He is currently the CEO of Cred and sold Freecharge to Snapdeal in 2015 for approximately USD 400 Million. He is a well known Angel Investor and has invested in more than 200 startups.[2] His net worth is around USD 800 Million. He also appeared in Economic Times 40 under 40 in 2015.[3]

Early Life[edit]

Currently based in Bangalore, Kunal was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra in a Gujurati family ,but due to financial struggle in his family he started working in his teenage years and did some odd-jobs.[4] He graduated from Wilson College, Mumbai with a degree in Philosophy, which he claims to be his life-lesson. After few years, in a MBA programme at Narsee Monjee Institute, but dropped out of it.

Freecharge, Cred and Investing[edit]

Kunal is known to have deep insights into consumer psychology and behaviour and was convinced with the concept of ‘Free’ and wanted to capitalise that. It was the first online mobile recharge company in India. After selling Freecharge to SnapDeal, Kunal spent some time at Y Combinator and Sequoia as an advisor. He has also been an advisor to the board of Bennett Coleman & Co Limited, the Chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of Indian. As an Angel investor, he has invested in various startups like Unacademy, Innov8, Go-Jek, Zilingo, Razorpay, Bharat Bazaar, and many more. He has also mentored numerous startups across Asia. In 2018 he stepped back into entrepreneurship with his new venture CRED. A web-based application that helps its users to manage their outstanding credit card payments and earn coins that can be redeemed on various brands, benefits or bills.
