Leonardo de Lima Borges Lins, better known as Léo Lins (Rio de Janeiro, September 3, 1982) is a Brazilian comedian, writer, screenwriter, and actor. He was part of the program The Noite com Danilo Gentili on SBT until July 2022. He is famous for his dark humor jokes.
Biography[edit]
He began his career in stand-up comedy in 2005 working on magic shows, creating the show "Bread and Circus" and later became a member of the group "Comédia em Pé," the first stand-up group in the country. He is the author of the books "Notes from a Stand-up Comedian," the first stand-up book published in Brazil on August 31, 2009, and "Secrets of Stand-Up Comedy" released on August 13, 2014.
He has already performed over a thousand stand-up shows throughout his career, some of them in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Japan and Germany. The first time he had the opportunity to perform in Japan, his visa was cancelled after a protest due to jokes he made about the earthquake and tsunami that hit the country. Later, due to an even bigger protest, he got his visa back and made the same jokes there live.
Your solo career began in 2009 with the show 'Surreal'. The invitation to appear on the talk show 'Agora é Tarde' on Band increased demand for shows and caused changes in the performance from jokes to visual identity. In 2012, the show 'Secret Jokes' began to be performed, with its first presentation on May 27, 2012.
The beginning in TV was as a writer for the show Legendários (2010), presented by Marcos Mion. But his debut on national television was on June 29, 2008 in the first edition of the segment Who Arrives There on Domingão do Faustão, where he was a finalist in the competition.
On television, he interviewed personalities such as Stan Lee, which led to him becoming a comic book character in a story involving Turma da Mônica and MARVEL, created by Mauricio de Souza Studios. His question to director Tim Burton: "Aren't you tired of working with Johnny Depp?" was cited by the Wall Street Journal as "the question we were all at least curious to know." The New Zealand Herald mentioned him for speaking to Harrison Ford, "When I was a kid, I used to pretend I was Indiana Jones until the day a stone ball broke my legs," and he replied, "You and I have a lot in common, I also dreamt I was Indiana Jones when I was younger." He was the Brazilian comedian invited by Warner to cover the Comedy Central's roast of James Franco and also the only one to interview director George Miller, creator of Mad Max.
He/she has already participated in the main TV and radio programs (Malhação, Programa do Jô, Domingão do Faustão, Pânico, A Praça é Nossa, A Liga), and was also a writer for the Legendários program at Rede Record
In 2011, he/she signed with Rede Bandeirantes and joined the panel of the now-defunct talk show Agora é Tarde, hosted by Danilo Gentili.
At the end of 2013, Danilo Gentili signed a contract with SBT and brought his entire team with him, including Léo Lins, but excluding the commentator Marcelo Mansfield, for the show The Noite.
He published his third book, called "Cesium Frog", through crowdfunding and his literature project was the most successful in his field. In addition to the book, keychains, sculptures, t-shirts, and even stuffed animals were made with an edition of only 30 units of the eight-legged frog. One of these plushies is currently located in Chernobyl.
In 2018, he was invited to participate in his first movie "Exterminators from Beyond Against the Bathroom Blonde," where he acts alongside Danilo Gentili, Murilo Couto, Dani Calabresa, and several others.
In October 2021, the comedian was ordered to pay 5,000 Brazilian Reals in moral damages to dancer Thais Carla in a lawsuit she filed against him for fatphobia.
On July 4th, 2022, SBT fired Léo Lins, ending his activity on The Noite. This happened after a video of a joke by Léo involving Teleton and a child with hydrocephalus went viral, from an old stand-up show, posted on Léo's social media on June 29th. He said, "I think Teleton is very cool because they help children with various problems. I saw a video of a boy in the interior of Ceará with hydrocephalus. The good side is that the only place in the city where there's water is in his head. The family didn't remove it, they installed a well. Now the father pulls water from his son and they're all happy." The joke was criticized by internet users. The Association for the Assistance of Disabled Children (AACD) published a statement of condemnation on social media, claiming that Leo had committed a crime and that the statement constituted a ableist speech. After the dismissal, the video was removed from official social media.
On May 17, 2023, YouTube removed the stand-up comedy show "Perturbador" from its platform under a court order, at the request of the Public Prosecution Office of São Paulo. Leo was also legally barred from leaving the city of São Paulo for more than ten days. Comedians, such as Fábio Porchat, considered the decision an act of censorship. The show contained dark humor jokes, including about people with disabilities, elderly individuals, and slavery.
