L.I.G.H.T. Christian Academy or Living in Godly Heritage Today Christian Academy (Chinese: 義光基督學校; pinyin: Yĭguāng Jīdū Xúexìao; Hokkien: Gi-keng Ki-tok Hák-hào), also known as LCA, is a privately operated educational institution located in Caloocan City, Metro Manila, Philippines established on June 16, 2000. It is the only Chinese Filipino Christian school in the Philippines using the Accelerated Christian Education system.

History[edit]

L.I.G.H.T. Christian Academy was opened in June 2000 by a group of Christian Chinese Filipino parents. Its early years saw an enrollment of 25 students taught by a faculty of three teachers.

Over the years, the School grew in number, eventually reaching to at least 100 by 2011.

Academics[edit]

Core curriculum[edit]

Under the Accelerated Christian Education system, students are placed in cubicles for most of the time in the learning center each day and study through individual booklets on each unit of work known as PACEs (Packets of Accelerated Christian Education).

The school consists of four departments, each of which has a head teacher, or a supervisor, and two assistant teachers, or monitors.

Additional non-PACE units of study are conducted in mini-classes such as Physical Education and Life Skills, where conventional methods of teaching are used.

The core curriculum at the high school-level in L.I.G.H.T. Christian Academy consists of the following PACE subjects:

  • Math: Algebra 7, Algebra 8, Geometry 9, Trigonometry 10
  • English: Word Building/Etymology 7, English 7, English 8, American Literature 9, British Literature 10
  • Science: Physical Science 7, Biology 8, Chemistry 9, Physics 10
  • Social Studies: Philippine History, World Geography, Asian History, World History, Civics (for US citizen), U.S. Economics, Philippine Economics

  • Bible: Life of Christ, New Testament Survey, Old Testament Survey
  • Electives: Fine Arts, French, Greek, Health, Spanish, Speech
  • Collegiate Level: Accounting, Business Math, Collectivism, College Math, English Composition

Mini-classes[edit]

The school is unique in one respect: While other A.C.E. schools promote individual response to the PACEs or workbooks, L.I.G.H.T. Christian Academy provides a tutorial system for Mathematics and Science twice a week to provide for adequate learning experience.

Student life[edit]

Academic and athletic development[edit]

Aside from the usual PACE curriculum, students are exposed to newer discoveries in Mathematics and Science fields through weekly enrichment programs.

The School has a SportsFest day every year where students compete against each other. Winning students are fielded into regional and national tournaments called Junior Student Convention and National Student Convention, respectively. These tournaments involve other schools in the country who use the Accelerated Christian Education system.

These tournaments contain academic and athletic competitions that bolster camaraderie and promotion of school spirit.

Spiritual Development[edit]

Devotions and Chapel Hour sessions are regularly conducted to ensure the spiritual guidance of the students. In addition, frequent mentoring/counseling sessions are provided through the Teen Connection program of the school, which ensures the proper development of students as Christians.

Youth camps and mission trips are annually held in resorts and needy areas in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces. These aim to expose students to the real world and to give them a chance to learn and use skills such as Gospel sharing and Evangelization.

Student Publications[edit]

The L.I.G.H.T. Post is an annual school magazine coming from a collaboration of the school's students and alumni. It features writings, literary selections, works of art, and pictures gathered throughout the school year.

Graduates[edit]

L.I.G.H.T. Christian Academy has a total of 18 high school graduates who go on to pursue further education in top-notch universities in the Philippines and the United States and obtain honors and awards in academics and extracurricular affairs in their fields.

Throughout its 10 years of existence, L.I.G.H.T. was able to faithfully serve more than 130 students who come from different backgrounds and cultures.
