L2M is a US based girl group formed in 2015. The group was masterminded, produced and funded by Mads Munk, a Danish entrepreneur who also funded the LEGO Friends DVD movie “Girlz 4 Life”.[1] Following auditions throughout the United States with former Syco Music Creative Director / Manager Tim Byrne (of One Direction and The X Factor (UK TV series) fame) the group was formed and includes five girls: Mariangeli Collado (of Hitstreak), Tati McQuay, Lexi Drew, McKenzie Mack, and Jenna Simmons.[2] The group name L2M stands for the phrase “Listening To Music” and was chosen by a focus group of eight- to 12-year-old girls.[3]

In less than a year, the band pulled in over 13 million views on LEGO’s YouTube channel for their debut single “Girlz”,[4] which led to a YouTube Kids partnership creating reality tutorials-based TV show ’L2M’s PopShop’ on their band YouTube channel,[5] but also casting the girls as the leads in the new Red Originals drama series called ’Hyperlinked!’. The show is based on the highly successful Miss O & Friends brand which aims to empower young women around the world.

So far the group has released 4 singles with their Warner Bros Records including “GIRLZ”, “Incredible”, “B.E.A.T.”, and “Living For The Rhythm”.[6]

The band released their most recent single “Living For The Rhythm” in February of 2017. The five girls are currently in the studio working on new music for a full-length album.

History[edit]

2015–2016: Formation and Girlz 4 Life[edit]

In 2015, Mads Munk had completed the first version of Girlz 4 Life using adult session singers. Looking for a younger sound, Munk approached Tim Byrne for help in putting a young girl group together.

After visiting LA and NYC and seeing auditions that were cheesy or overly “Disney”, Tim began to broaden his search across the US. When Tim found his group, the girls were all aged 10 or 11.

Byrne sent details of the project to the world’s best pop songwriters and producers, looking for a hit song to launch them. After ending up with some 500 songs to sift through, submitted by 250 writing teams. “Girlz” written by a team headed by Danish writer/producer Soulshock, was an obvious standout. ‘I sent it to Mads and he loved it. We knew that was the one.’[7]

They recorded “Girlz” quickly so that the film could be finished, then flew to LA for intense three- to five-week blocks, working with a team that included vocal coach Eric Vetro, who has helped stars such as Ariana Grande, Katy Perry and Anne Hathaway. During their time in LA, the girls worked with WilldaBeast Adams, along with Justin Bieber’s choreographer, Nick Demoura, on improving their dance moves, while Dallas Lovato – sister of pop star Demi Lovato – helped their acting skills. By May 2015, Byrne felt they were ready to secure a record deal and decided to ink a deal with Warner Music Group.[8]

Responsible for introducing Munk to Byrne, it was perhaps inevitable that Hermione (Hennessy) Ross became the band’s manager. A child prodigy who was playing classical piano onstage from the age of four, there is very little she hasn’t done in the music industry, from performer to manager to executive at Jive Records.

LegoFriends: Girlz 4 Life went on to be released on February 2nd, 2016 and was the biggest worldwide movie launch for LEGO in 2016.

2017: Hyperlinked![edit]

In February 2017, the LA Times revealed the new slate of YouTube Red Original Programming aimed at children and families which included the official announcement of Hyperlinked.[9] Hyperlinked! is a live-action series about a group of middle-schoolers who create and code a website for girls. The show is based off of Juliette Brindak from Miss O and Friends and how she created a safe online place for young girls. Blake also wrote and executive produced the series set to premiere summer of 2017.

Influences[edit]

Musically, the girls cite Justin Bieber, Cher Lloyd, Beyoncé and Fifth Harmony as their main influences among others. The girls even listened to Justin Bieber on the set of their most recent video shoot for "Living For The Rhythm".[10] Girl power and turning your dreams into reality are also common themes from their music to the new show Hyperlinked.

At the age of nine Mariangeli became the youngest cast member in HitStreak, a drama centered on a recording studio and created to be watched on tablets and phones.
