Lağımcılar (Sapper Corps) were a specialized unit within the Janissary corps of the Ottoman Army. Their main functions were to dig tunnels reaching enemy castle walls during sieges and blow up sections of castle wall with the use of explosives, or tunneling to the interior of the castle to allow infantry troops passage inside.[1] Furthermore, during trench warfare, these units would tunnel their way to enemy trenches and damage enemy soldiers, munitions and defenses with the use of explosives. Tunnel warfare remains a practiced form of combat today. Various historians partially credit military achievements such as the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453, and Suleiman the Magnificent's conquest of Rhodes in 1522, to the use of such tactics.
