LaNiyah Bailey, (October 9, 2004) is an award-winning, American author, public speaker and anti-bullying advocate. She is best known for her book, "Not Fat Because I Wanna Be".[1]

Early life[edit]

Bailey was born in Downers Grove, Illinois. When Bailey was six years old, she was bullied and teased because of her weight.[2][3]

Career as a writer[edit]

Based on her experiences, Bailey co-wrote a children’s book Not Fat Because I Wanna Be along with her mother LaToya “Toyiah Marquis” White and illustrator Laura Pérez Ricaud.[4][5] The book told the story of fictional character Jessica who was bullied because of her weight. Jessica had a medical condition which caused her to gain weight even though she was healthy and active. At a young age Jessica had to endure some painful and unhappy times. Finally Jessica decided to stand up for herself.[6]

Bailey and her parents appeared on Michel Martin's syndicated show Tell Me More on NPR radio in 2011.[7][8] The show included a discussion in support of President Barack Obama’s anti-bullying initiative. Shortly thereafter, the family was interviewed and profiled by CNN, FOX, NBC, BET, WGN, AOL, ABC, Huffington Post and news organizations from around the world, including London and South Korea.[citation needed]

After the book's release in March 2011, LaNiyah was featured in several magazines, and interviewed on a number of radio shows, blogs and TV shows. The book received positive reviews and was included lesson plans at various schools throughout the United States. It was added to the Avalon English Institute's third-sixth grade curriculum in Seoul, Korea. In February 2012, Bailey was nominated and presented with a "Grio's 100 History Maker’s In The Making" Award by Thegrio.[9]

At the age of seven Bailey began working on her second book entitled "Stand Up! Bully Buster's Coming to Town, an educational coloring and activity book.
