La Voce di New York (The Voice of New York, aka VNY) is a US-based bi-lingual (Italian and English) online newspaper directed towards the Italian community in the United States and those interested Italian and Italian-American news, language and culture.[2][3] According to the Editor, readers in Italy have exceeded readers from outside of the country since 2016.[citation needed]
La Voce di New York aims at maximum independence through the protection guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, ensuring full freedom of expression in the United States as well as in other countries. VNY also prides itself on being completely independent of political and financial influences.[4]
As an American media outlet delivered in Italian, the newspaper was proclaimed "an editorial experiment without precedent in Italian journalism" during the award ceremony of the Amerigo Awards.[5] The ceremony was hosted by the General Consul of the United States in Florence, Benjamin V. Wohlauer with the presence of US Ambassador Lewis Eisenberg.[6]
The editorial independence of the newspaper has also been recognized by Bill de Blasio, mayor of New York City, in a public letter sent to VNY in April 2019.[7]
VNY's motto is Liberty meets beauty, used in the homepage under the newspaper's logo.[8]
History[edit]
La Voce di New York was founded in April 2013 by journalist and published author Stefano Vaccara.[9] Vaccara was previously a Managing Editor of America Oggi. He is also an accredited United Nations correspondent for La Voce di New York and Radio Radicale with an office in the United Nations Headquarters.[10][self-published source][disputed (for: no confirmation whatsoever in UN.org) ]
Readership[edit]
The newspaper’s main focus is equally balanced among issues that may be of interest to the Italian-American community and the Italian diaspora, and wide-ranging global events in politics, society, culture, science and the arts. In addition, it incorporates video material covering the arts and cultural events and has grown to be a teaching tool for instructors of the Italian language on a global level.
Editorial Staff[edit]
VNY has an editorial team in New York. In addition, thanks to its recognition among the Italian Expat community in the US and elsewhere, the newspaper can count on the collaboration of correspondents with varied backgrounds such as academia, politics, science and the arts. Correspondents typically report on their fields of specialty.
Awards, Recognitions and Acknowledgements[edit]
VNY has been the organizer of the "Liberty Meets Beauty" media award since 2018. The ceremony takes place every year on April 25, i.e. the date that marks the end of Nazi occupation of the Italian peninsula during World War II and the victory of the Resistance. The recognition is awarded to journalists that distinguished themselves during the previous year for the courage and the professionalism expressed in their work. The award celebrates "freedom of the press as an expression of beauty because the seriousness and the virtue of a difficult profession like that of a journalist, needs to be recognized and, above all, celebrated, now more than ever".[11] The 2018 Award was assigned to New York magazine journalist Olivia Nuzzi[12] The 2019 award went to New York Times' journalist Gaia Pianigiani.[13][14]
In December 2018, VNY's Editor Stefano Vaccara was awarded the 2018 Amerigo award for journalism for the category "websites" at the American diplomatic residence in Florence, Italy.[15][16]
On April 25, 2019, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio sent a letter to VNY recognizing the newspaper and its independence.
