Lake and McHenry County Scanner is an online newspaper based in Libertyville, Illinois, United States, that focuses on local news in Lake County, Illinois and McHenry County, Illinois, which are the two northeast corner counties in Illinois, bordering Wisconsin.[1]

It is currently owned by SJB Business Solutions, Inc. The site is funded by advertisers and free of charge to its readers.[2]

The newspaper, which competes with the Lake County News-Sun, Daily Herald and Northwest Herald, has grown in recent years to have over 190,000 social media followers on Facebook and Twitter, and a website that receives millions of users each month.[3]

History[edit]

Lake and McHenry County Scanner was founded in January 2012 by Sam Borcia, along with a group of volunteers, to help fill a gap in crime, government and other local news that routinely went unreported.[3]

Borcia is currently the CEO and publisher of the publication.[4] The site was among the initial wave of independent local news websites to be created around the United States at a time when newspapers were suffering from layoffs and closures.[5]

The publication sparked controversy in October 2016 after one of its readers published a graphic photo of a motorcycle crash on the site's social media account.[6]

In 2021, the publication reported having three employees and multiple freelancers working for it.[7]

Lake and McHenry County Scanner joined Local Independent Online News (LION) Publishers in 2021.[8] LION is a professional journalism association for independent news publishers and has over 300 United States news organizations who belong to the association.[9]

Funding[edit]

Lake and McHenry County Scanner is an independent, private company funded by revenue generated from advertising and other partnerships as a result of a large readership.[2]

The company has received grants from the Google News Initiative's Journalism Emergency Relief Fund.[10]
