Laura Auer is an American soprano and singer-songwriter.
Early life and education
Laura Auer was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania to parents Kendrick and Diane Mills, and has one younger sister.
Auer spent much of her childhood with her Italian family on her mother’s side. Her grandparents, Joseph and Dorothy Promiscuo, both had powerful, natural operatic voices and encouraged Auer’s education in music. Auer would adopt the name Laura Promiscuo[1] as her stage name in the beginning of her recording career.
Auer first studied classical music on the viola from age 8 to 17, which led to her first professional gig at a real estate open house with an all-female string quartet she formed within her school orchestra. They gigged at events and restaurants around their hometown of West Chester.
Auer studied vocal performance at Pennsylvania State University with Dr. Christopher Kiver and Richard Kennedy. Auer performed various soprano roles, theatrical roles, and was a featured soloist for two a cappella groups[2] that toured annually and competed in ICCA’s, made famous by the Pitch Perfect movie series.
Career
2012 - 2013: SKC
After graduating from Pennsylvania State University, Auer met guitarist Nick Jarosz and formed her first original band, Soul Kitchen Collective[3] with bassist Steven West and drummer Dante Pope. The foursome recorded a 7-song EP with House Records in Washington DC but disbanded before finishing the project.
2014 - 2018: Laura Promiscuo
Auer moved to Philadelphia to record her debut album, “Chasing Down the Dream,”[4] with Milkboy Studios producer and 2x Grammy winner, Tim Sonnefeld.[5] The album was released under her former stage name, Laura Promiscuo.[1] The music video for the album’s second single, “Here in the Dark” was syndicated on MTV, VH1, Lifestyle Network, California Music Channel and more.[6]
After placing in The Philadelphia Songwriters Project Competition,[7] Auer performed in notable festivals and venues including PA’s Musikfest,[8] Singer Songwriter Cape May Festival,[9] Bike MS: City to Shore Ride in Ocean City, The Wilma Theatre in Philadelphia, the Bryce Jordan Center, Purple Fiddle,[10] the Fox and the Hound,[11] the Tin Pan[12] in Richmond VA, Ardmore Music Hall,[13] Melody's Cafe,[14] Dobb's Theater,[15] and The Bitter End in NYC. Auer also opened for major label artists Melody Gardot at The World Cafe Live and John Gorka.[16] She bought a vintage trailer[17] and toured coast to coast across the United States with a small group of musicians in 2015-2016.
In Los Angeles, Auer was connected with producer Rey Vercosa, who worked with Auer remotely from São Paulo to remix her original songs. Auer also continued to record and perform with Sonnefeld at music venues like Pour Vous, The Viper Room, and Hotel Cafe.
2019 - Present: Laura Auer
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Auer began training with Italian bel canto teacher Capucine Chiaudani[17] over Zoom, who helped her reconnect with her soprano voice. This period of time was a major transformation for Auer, and inspired her to change her name and release music that incorporates her full vocal range and capabilities. She decided to record a large body of work covering all of her older repertoire and new arias suggested by Chiaudani. The project called for a strict timeline of recording four 7-song LPs in a single year, as a four-part album series. Sonnefeld produced the project, with arrangements by Will Arundell in London, UK. Its first release “Spring” included Auer’s breakout cover of Disney’s "So This Is Love,”[18] featuring Japanese pianist Leiki Ueda, which led to a seven week concert tour contract in Taiwan to perform this song and other familiar Disney hits with The Evergreen Symphony Orchestra.[19] The second release “Summer" debuted at #8 on the US Billboard Charts,[20] featuring a duet of “Stranger in Paradise” with opera tenor John Riesen[21] and accompaniments by Laura Metcalf and Rupert Boyd of Boyd Meets Girl. Autumn followed shortly after featuring world renowned Celtic flutist Michael McGoldrick on “Carrickfergus” and Winter will release in late 2023, featuring a 40th anniversary tribute to The Snowman (1981 BBC film).
Personal life
Before graduating high school, Auer earned a 200-hour yoga teacher certification and taught classes of her own style, incorporating music and Kundalini techniques, and often singing with live musicians in her classes. This exposure to world music and Middle Eastern scales would later influence Auer’s songwriting.
Auer married Kevin Auer on December 24, 2019. The pair reside in Los Angeles, California.[22]
