Laura Cowan
Laura Cowan (born 1971)[citation needed] is a British-Israeli artist and silversmith. She is the first silversmith to have her crafts flown in space.
Early life & education[edit]
Cowan was born in Manchester, England. She studied silversmithing and jewelry making at London Guildhall University.[1] She relocated to Tel Aviv, Israel in 1996, and opened her own studio in 1999.[2]
Career[edit]
Cowan’s collections focus primarily on Judaica; she makes mezuzahs, menorahs, dreidels, candlesticks, and other Jewish ritual objects from stainless steel and anodized aluminum.[3]In 2008, Cowan’s mezuzahs, named the Apollo and Shuttle, were taken aboard Expedition 17 of the International Space Station by American Astronaut Greg Chamitoff.[4] [5] This was the first space mission to include mezuzahs on the craft’s door posts, and Cowan is the first silversmith to have her creations aboard a space mission.[6] [7]
