Le Sserafim (/ləːˈsəʁafɪm/; Hangul: 르세라핌; RR: Leuselapim; stylized in all caps) is a South Korean girl group formed by Source Music and Hybe Corporation. The group consists of six members: Sakura, Kim Chae-won, Huh Yun-jin, Kazuha, Kim Ga-ram and Hong Eun-chae. The group will make their debut on May 2, 2022, with the extended play (EP) Fearless.
Name
The group's name, Le Sserafim, is an anagram of the phrase "I'm Fearless".[1] It also refers to the seraphim, the plural form of seraph, which are six-winged celestial beings originating in Ancient Judaism.
Career
2011–2021: Pre-debut activities
Sakura made her acting debut in the movie Ano Hito Ano Hi in 2011. In the same year, she joined the Japanese idol group HKT48 as a first generation trainee. In 2012, she was promoted to a full member of HKT48 Team H. In 2014, Sakura was transferred to HKT48 Team KIV. After being with the group for 10 years, Sakura officially graduated on June 27, 2021.[2][3]
Sakura, Chaewon and Yunjin participated in the reality competition series Produce 48 in 2018.[4][5][6] After finishing in 2nd and 10th place, Sakura and Chaewon were selected as members of the show's resulting girl group Iz*One[7] and promoted with them until their disbandment on April 29, 2021.[8][9] Yunjin finished in 26th place and was eliminated in episode 11, thus did not make it to the final lineup.[10] During the show, Yunjin represented Pledis Entertainment while Chaewon represented Woollim Entertainment.[11][12] Kazuha did ballet and was a professional ballerina.[13]
2022–present: Debut with Fearless
On March 14, 2022, Source Music announced that they would launch a new girl group in collaboration with Hybe Corporation, with Sakura and Kim Chaewon set to be the first members of the group.[14][15] On March 21, Hybe confirmed the group would officially debut in May.[16] The members were revealed through 'The First Moment of Le Sserafim' from April 4 to April 9 (in order: Sakura,[17] Kim Garam,[18] Hong Eunchae,[19] Kim Chaewon,[20] Kazuha[21] and Huh Yunjin.)[22] On April 13, Source Music announced that Le Sserafim will release their debut extended play, Fearless on May 2, 2022.[23] On April 21, it was announced that the album pre-orders had surpassed 270,000 copies in seven days.[24]
