Le Yi (Chinese: 乐毅; born 24 December 1989), better known by the pseudonym "Axl Le", is a Chinese contemporary visual artist, digital artist, art director and director. He is known for his short films, animations and digital prints. Le was born in Shanghai, China and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in architecture from Shanghai University in 2013, a degree that sharpened his eye for detail and taught him how to use 3D-rendering software. He later went on to work as an assistant to Chinese photographer Maleonn, which provided further aesthetic inspiration.[1]

Works[edit]

His work and artistic style explores many categories, with many works reflecting on Sci-Fi[2] and Cyberpunk[3] related topics. His work has been featured in various art networks and magazines, including Nowness,[4] Arte,[5][6] and Pause Fest.[7]

The Kiyomi Kobayashi (2019) series was a creative breakthrough for Le,[8] as the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art showed the trilogy as the centerpiece of the group exhibition Do You Copy? in 2019-2020. This was followed by the short film The Journey (2019),[9] which constructs a riveting philosophical odyssey inspired by a trip to Norway in 2017. His short film Vincent (2020) attracted even more international attention[10] for its cyberpunk aesthetics and its depiction of a dark and disorienting near-future Hong Kong.[11]

Axl Le has also received attention for his static works, and the series I am Chinese, I don't eat dogs, but I eat aliens was rendered even more relevant due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12] In this series, Le reinvented odd recipes by adding strange twists. The series acted as a refute to the assumptions some people have about Chinese diets, while also poking fun at his own culture. His series The Patient (2021), which includes digital prints, animations and a short film, examines the ways in which we make ourselves sick.[13] This series was particularly well received in East Asia and received a special feature on the Korean YouTube channel WLDO.[14]
