LedaFlow® is a transient multiphase flow simulator. It is owned by LedaFlow Technologies DA, a Norwegian company established in 2013, and commercialized by Kongsberg Digital. LedaFlow was first released in 2011. It offers users the possibility to model networks of pipes and to simulate the transport of multiphase flow through them.
Designed for the oil and gas industry, it can be applied during the life cycle of a field: flow assurance, production engineering, well kill, dynamic field simulators, operator training simulators, virtual flow metering, etc.
History
2001-2004 Proof of concept
In 2001 ConocoPhillips[2][3] and SINTEF[4] started a new multiphase research and development project. A year later, after initial ideas for models and experiments were planned, Total[2][5] was invited to join the project which received the name LedaFlow. A technology advisory group involving flow assurance experts from ConocoPhillips and Total was established.
A set of full-scale experiments were deployed in the SINTEF multiphase flow laboratory[6], one of the world's largest multiphase test facilities. The initial flow experiments were performed on the large scale loop, covering diameters of 8″ and 12″. SINTEF merged all their flow data into a database. Based on this, the LedaFlow technology concept was proved in 2004, ending the first phase of the research and development project.
2004-2010 Prototyping and testing
The following years focused on the development of the engineering tool.
A LedaFlow Technology Forum was established in 2009 with the objective to bring the prototype to testing and feedback.
A Customer Acceptance Test (CAT) was conducted in 2010 by the LedaFlow partners. For three months, LedaFlow® was extensively tested using a large number of experimental databases and field data. The success of the CAT marked the end of the second phase of the research and development project and the beginning of the commercialization project of LedaFlow.
2008-2011 Commercialization project and introduction to the market
KONGSBERG was selected as the commercialization partner in 2008 with the objective to lift LedaFlow to the technical standard required by the industry. The commercialization project started in 2010 after a successful acceptance testing. In June 2011, the first commercial version of LedaFlow (1.0) was released. Since then, new versions are regularly released to make new features available to LedaFlow users.
“2013-today Further development and improvement” A joint industry project called LIFT (LedaFlow Improvements to Flow Technology) was established in 2013. The objectives of this JIP are to validate LedaFlow against field data provided by the operator partners, to identify areas of improvement and develop further the software.
LedaFlow Technologies DA
LedaFlow® is owned by LedaFlow Technologies DA (LTDA), a Norwegian company based in Asker, Norway. LTDA was established in 2013 by the four LedaFlow partners, ConocoPhillips, Total, SINTEF and KONGSBERG. Its mission is to ensure a continuous development of LedaFlow and bring to the industry tools for multiphase flow simulation.[7]
LedaFlow products
The LedaFlow suite of simulation software is composed of three products:
- LedaFlow Engineering 1D, an application that is used for transient simulation of multiphase flow.
- LedaFlow Point Model, a plug-in that provides estimates of liquid volume fractions, pressure gradient and flow regimes at a single point to third party steady-state software.
- LedaFlow Integrated, a transient engine that can be plugged into dynamic process simulators for integrated simulations and decision support.
