Leeroy Matata (born December 31, 1996, in Bonn, real name Marcel Gerber) is a German web video producer and former wheelchair basketball player. His videos mainly contain entertainment, lifestyle and gaming, but also more serious topics.[1][2] He is in the network funk.
Life
Gerber was born in Bonn as the son of a Cameroonian. Due to a bone disease (juvenile osteoporosis), he has been a wheelchair user since the age of four and aspired to a career as a wheelchair basketball player. After five years in the youth department, Gerber made the leap into the active field in 2008 and gained initial experience in the premier league. The coaches of the national selection also became aware of him during this time, and so in 2014 he was able to compete for the first time at the German Junior Championships for the NRW team, with which he became German Champion.
At the age of 16, Gerber played for the German U19 national team for the first time. Two years later he was nominated for the U22 national team. At the same time, Gerber switched to the 2nd Bundesliga in Wiesbaden at club level in order to take the next step there. In the second year he managed to lead the team to promotion to the 1st Bundesliga, while away from the sports hall he attended the upper secondary school of the comprehensive school in Beuel and graduated from high school in Bonn.[3]
At the same time, Gerber produced his first YouTube videos in 2016 and began his career as a comedian, influencer and mental coach. His community now includes over 1.8 million people.
In September 2019, the YouTuber was nominated together with Frank Elstner and My Name Is Andong for the YouTube Golden Camera Digital Awards in the Best Newcomer category, which Frank Elstner, however, won for himself. At the end of 2020, Gerber made it into the top ten top creators in Germany.[4]
Since the beginning of February 2020, Gerber has moderated the format Leeroys Moments for SWR.
From February 15 to 17, 2020, he was the only German YouTuber to take part in the 55th Munich Security Conference.
In September 2020 he switched to the online media service funk with his YouTube channel "Leeroy will's wissen!".[5][6][7]

In his videos, Gerber mainly deals with comedy and lifestyle topics. But more serious issues are also addressed. In July 2018, for example, he opened the secondary channel "Leeroy wills wissen!" and started the format "Wie ist es..." (How's that...). In the format, Gerber meets people who have a difficult or unusual fate and talk about it in front of the camera. Also, on September 30, 2019, he and his brother David Matata launched the "MatataBros" channel, which is currently about testing various games chosen by the community. However, this channel was dissolved again. Since April 12, 2020, there has also been the channel "Leeroys Sorgentelefon" (Leeroys concern phone), on which Gerber calls listeners who have concerns every Wednesday.[8][9][10]
