Production[edit]
Two sequels to Left Behind were planned, with Thomson, Murray, and Whelan all signed on to reprise their roles, but they were cancelled after the film's poor critical reception and low box office returns.
On April 7, 2015, Paul LaLonde launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, asking for $500,000 in contributions. The campaign raised $80,699 after a month. If the goal had been met, LaLonde would have begun filming in August 2015 for a summer 2016 theatrical release. On July 22, LaLonde announced on his Facebook page that the crowdfunding campaign has resumed "on their own platform".[2]
On July 2, 2017, LaLonde announced on the film's Facebook page that he has purchased the rights to all 16 books of the series. He explained that he had been "handicapped" to the first two books in the series and will now be able to finally tell the story with a plan for a series of 7 films covering the books in their entirety,[3] the first of these being an adaptation of the third book, Nicolae: The Rise of Antichrist. In August 2021, Lalonde announced to Pinnacle Peak Pictures that a reboot of the Left Behind film series was in development, though it was being written and produced by the same crew behind the previous two iterations.[4] In November 2021, Lalonde announced the beginning of production on "Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist" with Kevin Sorbo directing and starring as Rayford Steele.[5].
Casting[edit]
Although the film is a sequel to the 2014 film, none of the cast members return, with all of them being recast. Director Kevin Sorbo replaces Nicolas Cage as Rayford Steele, while Greg Perrow, Sarah Fisher, Kathryn Kohut, and Charles Andrew Payne replace Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Nicky Whelan, and Lance E. Nichols as Cameron "Buck" Williams, Chloe Steele, Hattie Durham, and Bruce Barnes, respectively. David LeReaney plays Chaim Rosenzweig, Sam Sorbo, Kevin Sorbo's wife, plays Amanda White, and Linda Kee plays Ivy Gold, a character who is not from the books, having first appeared in the original Left Behind film played by Krista Bridges. Neal McDonough, Corbin Bernsen, and Bailey Chase have been cast in undisclosed roles.
Kevin Sorbo recently revealed that he was initially approached seven years ago to replace Nicolas Cage for the role, but came onboard when it was time to go into production as he felt that "it just seems like the time is right."[6]
Release[edit]
Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist was expected to be release sometime in October 2022, but has been pushed back. It will now be released from January 26 to January 29, 2023 in partnership with Fathom Events.[7] A trailer was released the very same day.
The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD for March 21, 2023.[8]
Future[edit]
Co-writer Paul Lalonde said the film is intended to lead into a series of seven films that will adapt the rest of the books.[3][4]
