Leonard Koscianski

Leonard Koscianski (born 1952), known mononymosly as Koscianksi is an American painter, printmaker, educator and art theoriest born in Cleveland, Ohio and settled in Annapolis, Maryland recognised for his unique works which blend Surrealism, American Primitivism. His artwork is in many public and private collections and has appeared in Newspapers such as The New York Times. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his Master's degree from the University of California, Davis.[1][2]

Early life and education

Leonard Koscianski was born in 1952 in Cleveland, Ohio as the eldest of four boys, raised in a Catholic family, which traces its heritage back to Poland. He was the son of an attorney and a fashion designer, which gave him appreciation for precision and craftmanship. He had very little formal art instruction as a child with his early experience simply being childhood activities rather than education. His parents were antique and art collectors and he anually visited the local art museum. He idolised the cartoon artists of Mad Magazine and sought inspiration from hisCleveland Institute of Art local religious imagery. Only in high school he began to envision himself as an artist. At 16 he won his high school's annual art contest and subsequently took a summer painting class at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

He was a student of both Buckminster Fuller, an architect, and Wayne Thiebaud, a notable painter. He obtained his Bachelor's degree from the Cleveland Institute of Art and his Master's degree from the University of California, Davis.

Artistic career

Kosanski is represented by the Miesal gallery in California. His work is held in major public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. His art has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, ARTnews, Art in America and Artforum. He is a well regarded professor and public speaker, receiving several honors, including the National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Fellowship. He lives and works in Annapolis, Maryland, where he worked on the city's art in Public Places Commission.
