Leonardo Montoya (born May 1, 1972, in Medellin, Colombia) is a Colombian-American mixed media artist.[1] [2] [3]
Career[edit]
Montoya started his artistic career at twelve by enrolling in the Eladio Vélez School of Fine Art in 1985 while completing his secondary education. Just a year after graduating in 1991, he held his first exhibition. [2] [4] [5] In 1992, Montoya received his first mural commission at Cinema Las Américas in Medellin, and the artwork is still on display there. [2] From 1991 to 1994, several of his drawings were published in the El Colombiano. In 1994, he returned to the Eladio Vélez School of Fine Arts to study advertising and photography for four years. [2]
Montoya taught art at the National Academy of Arts in Medellin from 1995 to 1996 and was an illustrator of medical books for the University of Antioquia.[5] In 2010, studied classical drawing at the Grand Central Academy of Art in Nueva York with instructors such as Jon de Martin and Scott Waddell. [2] [5] Montoya initiated a sequence of exhibitions for his Diva collection in 2015, which showcased celebrities and women’s empowerment. [1] [6] [7]
Work[edit]
Montoya's creations were described by magazine Artsy Shark as having elements that "blend reality and fantasy" with an inspiration from the Retro movement.[8] Montoya believes that his pieces explore themes such as cultural diversity, gender equality, migration, and female empowerment. [9]
