The Lerwick District Heating Scheme is operated by Shetland Heat Energy and Power Ltd (SHEAP). The peak output is 7MW of thermal energy which is used to heat about 1000 customers in Lerwick, the capital of the Shetlands. Heat is derived from the combustion of waste. It is located adjacent to the Lerwick Power Station and the Lerwick Energy Recovery Plant and District Heating. It is of note in that it is the larges District heating Scheme in Scotland and was an entirely new retrofit to an existing small town.
