Lewis A. Novack (born May 28, 1993) is a Clinical Infectious Diseases Epidemiologist, journalist and syndicated newspaper columnist.
Early life and education
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada to a Jewish family, Novack received a B.A. degree with honors from Carleton University and a M.S degree from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management. At 10 years of age, he became the youngest Canadian certified in First Aid and C.P.R by St. John Ambulance Canada [1] Novack is also a recipient of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award
Career
Before becoming an Epidemiologist, Novack worked as a special policy advisor to the president of Carleton University, and as a Health economist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management and the Ministry of Health (Indonesia).[2] [3] Following his Masters, Novack worked at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, as a Clinical Epidemiologist in the Department of Epidemiology focusing on preventive Cardiology[4] and Predictive analytics models. He currently is a Clinical Epidemiologist and Research Specialist at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the Division of Infectious Diseases and teaches Neglected Tropical Diseases at the Harvard School of Public Health in the summer. Novack has also been featured in The Chronicle Herald [5], Brigham and Women's Hospital and is a notable Alumni at Brandeis University. In 2022, Novack won the Research Excellence Award from the Brigham Research Institute and Harvard Medical School. He also is a public speaker who lectures nationwide.
Novack currently writes for the New England Journal of Medicine, contributes to the Salt Wire Network and is a columnist for Brigham and Women's.
Epidemiology
Novack's articles have been published in Emerging Infectious Diseases (journal) [6], The New England Journal of Medicine[7] Clinical Infectious Diseases [8] Most notably, Novack co-designed and led Moderna's Phase 3 clinical trial Efficacy and Safety of the mRNA-1273 SARS-CoV-2 Vaccine [9] with Operation Warp Speed and the Brigham and Women's Vaccine Trial Group [10]. Novack is a well-established investigator in human studies including the identification of novel infectious disease syndromes and pathogens and in the development of novel diagnostics and therapeutics including vaccines. He currently leads over 20 Clinical Trials, namely around HIV, COVID-19 and First in Human studies. Novack also consults for companies in navigating the Infectious Diseases Space and statistical analysis. In 2020, Novack became one of the youngest editors for the New England Journal of Medicine.
