Lewis H. LaRue

Lewis H. LaRue (born 1938 in Bartley, WV) is the class of 1958 Alumni Professor at Washington and Lee Law School, whose scholarship focuses on legal argument. He has been associated with the the "Law and Literature" movement and his scholarship and teaching spanned constitutional law, legal writing and evidence.

Biography[edit]

LaRue attended Washington and Lee College, from which he graduated in 1959 with a B.A. in Political Science, and went on to earn LL.B. from the Harvard Law School in 1962.

Admitted to practice in Virginia, 1962. Legal Officer, United States Marine Corps, 1962-65. Trial Attorney, United States Department of Justice, 1965-67. Assistant Professor of Law, Washington and Lee University School of Law, 1967-70; Associate Professor of Law, 1970-74; Professor of Law, 1974-85. Director, Frances Lewis Law Center and Professor of Law, 1985-88; Professor of Law, 1988-90; Class of 1958 Alumni Professor, 1990-2005.

Works[edit]

LaRue's scholarship pertaining to legal argument and in particular stories told in the public arena are explored in two of his books: Political Discourse: A case Study of the Watergate Affair [1] and Constitutional Law as Fiction: Narrative in the Rhetoric of Authority.[2]

LaRue's exploration of the use of argument at trial and more deeply, the use of science in the courtroom is reflected in several law review articles and culminated in a 2006 book he coauthored with fellow legal scholar David Caudill, No Magic Wand: The Idealization of Science in Law. [3]
