Lightsum (Hangul: 라잇썸; Japanese: ライトサム, stylized in all caps) is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment in 2021. The group is composed of eight members: Sangah, Chowon, Nayoung, Hina, Juhyeon, Yujeong, Huiyeon, and Jian.

Name[edit]

The group's name "LIGHTSUM" is a combination of "LIGHT" (light) and "SUM" (gather), which means "all things that shine small gather and reveal the world, delivering greater positive energy through a message of hope".^[1]

Pre-debut[edit]

In 2017, Juhyeon participated in The Unit: Idol Rebooting Project as the show's sole female trainee contestant, representing Cube Entertainment. She was eliminated in the show's penultimate episode, ranking #25. In 2018, a fourteen-year-old Juhyeon participated in Dancing High.^[2] She did not pass the evaluation round.^{[citation needed]}

In 2018, Chowon, Nayoung and Yujeong all participated in Produce 48, though the latter two were trainees under different companies at the time. They completed the show ranking in thirteenth, twenty-first and fifty-first place, respectively, thus not winning positions in the winning girl group. During an appeal trial for the series' voting manipulation scandal, in 2020, it was revealed that Chowon had ranked in sixth place, thus winning a position to be in, Iz*One.^[3]

In August 2019, it was announced that Chowon and Juhyeon had both signed exclusive contracts with Cube Entertainment.^[4]

On April 15, 2021, Cube Entertainment announced they would debut a new girl group, called Lightsum, in the first half of 2021, the first group debut since (G)I-dle in 2018.^[5]

From April 19 to April 22, Cube Entertainment began unveiling two new members of the group, a day, across all Lightsum social media accounts.^[6]^[7]^[8]^[9]
