Lips Are Movin, the 2014 music video for the single "Lips Are Movin", stars American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor. The video was directed by filmmaker Philip Andelman and commissioned by Hewlett-Packard.
The release of the video of "Lips Are Movin" coincided with the song's single release. Mimicking what takes place behind the scenes of a music video shoot, the video features dancers Les Twins and Chachi Gonzales. The clip premiered on November 19, 2014 and drew in over 2.5 million YouTube views in less than two days. The video received generally positive reviews and was noted for its imagery.
Background and concept[edit]
The accompanying music video for "Lips Are Movin" was filmed in Los Angeles and directed by Philip Andelman.[1] It premiered on Trainor's Vevo account on November 19, 2014.[2] Speaking to MTV News, Trainor stated that the clip did not only comprise of a story and theme, describing it as "Here's me being sassy and other people dancing with me and having just a good time and trying to get through this feeling of, Ugh he's cheating on me again".[3] The singer went on to highlight that the visual's aim was to portray a story of "I know you're lying, but that's OK because I'm gonna find the next guy. I'm good."[3] The video was commissioned by information technology corporation Hewlett-Packard, as part of their campaign to promote their HP Pavilion product. However, the sponsorship's product use in the clip is minimal, with the Pavilion making a brief appearance in the video's initial frames, and then reappearing as a supporting player throughout. The advertising agency responsible for the clip's creation, 180LA, recruited several "influencers" for its shooting—dancers, set designers and actors with large social media followings that would guarantee the music video being shared with their audiences.[4] The influencers featured in the video include American set designer Bri Emery, American actors Marcus Johns, Cody Johns and Robby Ayala, French dancers Les Twins, Spanish stylist Sara Escudero, American hair stylist Kristin Ess, Japanese nail artist Mei Kawajiri,[1] American dancer Chachi Gonzales,[5] and Pomeranian Barkley the Pom.[6] During the filming, a dancer from Houston recorded her choreography online, attaining suggestions from her fans, of which a few were later invited to star in the video. The script communicated the influencers' involvement. Andelman suggested showcasing behind-the-scenes of a music-video shoot—which ended up being the video's framework. Trainor's team asked 180LA to evolve the look of the "All About That Bass" music video without straying too far from it.[1]
Synopsis[edit]
The music video follows a simple premise: Trainor sings into a microphone in front of a pastel blue wall,[6] sometimes flanked by some backup dancers.[8] Pairs of lips serve as prominent features throughout the video, and they include closeups of Trainor's mouth and a drawing of a large pair as a backdrop against a wall, which was compared to the poster for The Rocky Horror Picture Show by Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker.[7] Trainor is also seen reclining on a couch in the shape of lips, which Parker compared to the sofas used for reality show So You Think You Can Dance.[7] The singer also sports lip-shaped earrings and sunglasses for some of her outfits.[7] The set changes constantly, with props being lifted on and off screen by workers throughout the entire clip.[2]
Analysis and reception[edit]
The music video drew in over 2,500,000 YouTube views in less than two days.[4] Billboard writer Andrew Hampp wrote that its production was a "historic milestone in the realm of YouTube creators." The visuals are the first music video ever to be created entirely by social influencers.[9] According to Andrew, its release resulted in an 11% increase in Trainor's Twitter followers, 15.8% growth in Facebook fans, 41.3% increase in Instagram followers and an estimated doubling of her Vine followers.[9] James Cowan of Canadian Business opined, "Cynics will view this as a decidedly stodgy brand trying to make itself hip by hanging out with cool kids," adding, "But a less-jaded eye might call it something else—arts patronage for the 21st century."[4] Writing for music website Idolator, Bradley Stern called the video as "squeaky-clean visual," and praised its bright and colorful imagery,[8] while Daily Express writer Stefan Kyriazis deemed it "red hot".[10]
MTV UK wrote that the clip continued the bubbly, bright themes of Trainor's "All About That Bass" video, and noted that the singer's sequinned kitty top resembled the one which Katy Perry wore for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.[11] Yahoo! writer Lyndsey Parker acclaimed the Trainor's fashion in the clip and quipped that the video "seems to be an unofficial campaign to land her own M.A.C. Viva Glam endorsement deal".[7] Fuse's Hilary Hughes felt that the visual was a bold and sassy sentiment, and stated that its style shift from the "All About That Bass" clip "definitely made a statement".[12] Hughes went on to describe the video's dance routine as "fierce" and commented, "'Lips Are Movin' is a super-meta technicolor dance party, complete with confetti, pop art and the endearing self-awareness Meghan brings to each track".[12] Mashable's Brian Anthony Hernandez opined, "The visuals are what you would expect from a bouncy pop song: young dancers, colorful backgrounds, quirky outfits and exaggerated expressions."[13] AXS's Scott Shelter wrote that the visual was "every bit as playful, bright and fun" as the one for "All About That Bass".[6]
