Lisa Helfend Meyer is an American attorney focusing her practice exclusively in divorce and family law in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Early life and education[edit]
Meyer graduated from Loyola Law School and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles. Meyer was a member of Phi Delta Phi.[1]
Career[edit]
In 2000, Meyer became a founding partner at Meyer, Olson, Lowy & Meyers, LLP (MOLM).[2] In 2011, Meyer successfully represented a woman who suffered severe brain damage - unable to walk, talk or eat - during the birth of her triplets and was granted visitation rights to see them.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Meyer asserted that she possesses an inherent entitlement to legal representation for Abbie as she was unable to communicate for herself.[9][10][11][12] Meyer focused her attention on the California Family Code in her arguments, claiming that Abbie has a constitutional right to child visitation.[13] In other legal proceedings, the rights of conservators to decide on the medical treatment of individuals deemed incompetent have been affirmed - this includes the authority to discontinue feeding tubes, a measure that accelerates the process of death. Meyer was of the view that if a conservator has the capability to decide the fate of a person in an irreversible persistent vegetative state, there's no reason why a conservator couldn't also decide to pursue visitation.[14] Meyer expressed dissatisfaction at Abbie's situation, stating that during a December visit, when her children requested to take home a framed photo of their mother, the father concealed the photos in a cabinet.[15] Abbie Dorn, aged 34 at the time of ruling, was scheduled to receive three-hour visits daily for five days each summer at her parents' residence in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where they provide her care. Meyer was shown on Good Morning America to discuss the Abbie Cohen Dorn case.[16]
Meyer has had a number of high-profile cases, including representing Trevor Bauer's alleged sexual assault victim, Lindsey Hill.[17][18][19][20][21] Trevor Bauer, after the trial, publicly criticized Meyer's law firm on X which garnered over 70 million views.[22][23] Following Bauer's video, Elon Musk questioned the law firm's integrity on X which received 11 million views, asking if the team withheld evidence and suggested a countersuit.[24]
Meyer's family law cases include Sergey Brin's ex-wife Nicole Shanahan[25], Kelly Rutherford,[26] Dr. Dre's ex-wife Nicole Young[27][28], Anna Anka[29], Tony Danza's ex-wife, Cesar Millan's ex-wife Ilusión Millán[30], and Josh Homme's ex-wife Brody Dalle[31].
Meyer is a contributor to the Huffington Post Divorce blog.[32] She was a consultant to the TV show Family Law, participated in a segment of 48 Hours regarding a contested adoption situation, and has been quoted by Associated Press, Los Angeles Times, Today Show, CNN, Court TV, Fox News, CSQ Magazine, and TMZ.[33][34][35][36] Meyer has co-authored articles about child custody proceedings, including the Conflict between Dependency Court and Family Law Jurisdiction[37]. Meyer was featured on the SheSez podcast with Linda Grasso on June 21, 2022.[38]
Personal life[edit]
Meyer's first marriage ended in divorce. She is now married to Ron Cherney.[39] Their primary residence is in Encino, Los Angeles at W. C. Fields's former home.[40]
