Lisa Schettner [ˈliːsə ʃˈetnə] (born 23 November), also known as Elisabeth Schettner or Liz Schettner, is a French singer-songwriter, musician, producer and music video director, who gained popularity from posting original songs and covers on her YouTube channel. Her latest song to date "Bayraktar [Mashup Edition]"[1][2] was created in collaboration with famous Ukrainian colonel and author Taras Borovok[3][4] as a protest against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.[5][6][7] The track became a hit after its release on April 7, 2022.[8][9][10][11] It peaked at 97 in the Ukrainian charts.[12][13]

Lisa's main music genre is folk, medieval, and Celtic (she describes/calls her music as "modern fairytale"). Her other genres are country, bluegrass, folk rock, rock, pop and EDM.

In July 2016, she released her introductory EP Up High, and later her first single of the same name.[14] Two of Lisa's songs "Up High" and "Great Expectations" made it to the yearly Celtic Top 20 in the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast.[15][16] "Up High" was also awarded an honourable mention in the 2017 Texas Scot Talent.[17] Her 2019 track "Baby Beauty (Baby Shower Song)" saw international popularity following its success on the video-sharing platform TikTok, and is played at baby showers by expectant parents all over the world, especially in Asia.

Early life and career[edit]

Lisa Schettner was born in Bayonne, southern France. Due to her parents' profession, she kept changing her country of residence, attending schools in Bogotá, Vancouver, Vienna, and various regions of France. As a child, Lisa attended the Colombian private kindergarten "Periquito", in Bogota. She imitated all melodies she heard, from nursery rhymes to Latino music, and performed in several school plays in Spanish. At age 6 she started to learn the piano, and later in Canada she was taught the guitar by singer-songwriter and guitarist Ed Sadler, founder of the rock band Fear Zero.

At the age of 12, she was given her mother's first guitar, and began expressing herself through her own music and lyrics.[18] Her knowledge of piano and vocal technique increased under the private tutelage of English artists Hilary and Simon Carrington, founding member of the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble The King's Singers.

Lisa's first songs were recorded and produced in Vancouver, in the studio of Ed Sadler.[19][20] At present, Lisa records her music in her home studio in southern France, and works with several sound engineers such as Jim Kwan, Tyler Brooker,[21] and the Latin Grammy award winner Thomas Juth.

She is a skilled dancer thanks to the numerous ballet, lyrical and jazz lessons she took while growing up. She learned hip-hop under the guidance of Teya Wild, a finalist in the Canadian version of So You Think You Can Dance, season 4. When Lisa was studying at the Lycée Français de Vienne (French High School of Vienna), she took ballroom dance lessons, such as the waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, tango and charleston, at the world-renowned Elmayer Dance School.

She also received professional training in the dramatic arts, at The Lir Academy and Rose Bruford College. She honed her acting skills at the Tarlington Training Studio; among her teachers were film actor Cameron Bancroft and the founder of the studio, Carole Tarlington, whose name now appears in the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame.

In 2017, Lisa successfully passed the entrance exam at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA. In 2022, she completed her studies in digital marketing at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Additional features[edit]

Georgian writer Tamuna Tsertsvadze mentions Lisa's music in several of her novels. In her book Gift of the Fox,[28] one of the three main protagonists is named Liz Schettner, after the singer.[29] Lisa Schettner's folk ballad "Edmund's Lullaby" was written as a soundtrack for the first volume of Tamuna's book series Zariel Legends: Zodiac Circle.

Lisa is a member of the Shubb Artist Program, The Shubb Family of Artists.[30] When playing the guitar, she exclusively uses Shubb capos.

Alain de Botton, famous British philosopher and author, said about Lisa Schettner's music: "What talent and natural gifts you have. I'm deeply moved - and especially loved Strike You Out."[31]
