List of Italian presidents by longevity
President | Date of birth | Presidency |
---|---|---|
Sergio Mattarella | 23 July 1941 | 2015–present |
This is a list of Italian presidents by age. This table can be sorted to display Italian presidents by name, order of office, date of birth, age at inauguration, length of retirement, or lifespan.
Two measures of longevity are given; this is to allow for the differing number of leap days occurring within the life of each president. The first figure is the number of days between date of birth and date of death, allowing for leap days; in parentheses the same period given in years and days, with the years being the number of whole years the president lived, and the days being the remaining number of days after his last birthday. Where the president in question is still living, the longevity is calculated up to 23 November 2024.
Overview[edit]
The median age of accession is roughly 71 years and 181 days which falls between Antonio Segni and Sergio Mattarella. The youngest person to become president was Francesco Cossiga, at the age of 56 years, 342 days. The oldest person to become president was Sandro Pertini, at the age of 81 years, 287 days.
The oldest and only living president is Sergio Mattarella, born 23 July 1941 (aged 83 years, 123 days).

Timeline of living presidents[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the President of Italy and were still living, at different periods in history. There have been 3 time periods when there was only one living president, first with the inauguration of Enrico De Nicola in 1948 and most recently during the administration of Sergio Mattarella following the death of Giorgio Napolitano in 2023.
There have been five time periods when 4 living current or former presidents co-existed. The first period was from the December 1971 inauguration of Giovanni Leone to the December 1972 death of Antonio Segni. The second period was from the July 1978 inauguration of Sandro Pertini to 17 October 1978 death of Giovanni Gronchi. The third period was from the July 1985 inauguration of Francesco Cossiga to the June 1988 death of Giuseppe Saragat. The fourth period was from the May 1999 inauguration of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to the November 2001 death of Giovanni Leone. The fifth, most recent, and longest period was a 4 year and 94 day period from the May 2006 inauguration of Giorgio Napolitano to the August 2010 death of Francesco Cossiga. If one includes future presidents as well as past and current presidents, there has been only one time period when all 12 different presidents co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- There have been three men who have been the only living president: Enrico De Nicola (as the first, from 1 January 1948 to 12 May 1948), Giovanni Gronchi (from Einaudi's death on 30 October 1961 to 11 May 1962), and Sergio Mattarella (from Napolitano's death on 22 September 2023 to present).
- During five periods in the History of Italy, has there been 4 persons alive to have been president. The first period was from 29 December 1971 to 1 December 1972 (when Giovanni Gronchi, Antonio Segni, Giuseppe Saragat, and Giovanni Leone were alive). The second period was from 9 July 1978 to 17 October 1978 (when Giovanni Gronchi, Giuseppe Saragat, Giovanni Leone, and Sandro Pertini were alive). The third period was from 3 July 1985 to 11 June 1988 (when Giuseppe Saragat, Giovanni Leone, Sandro Pertini, and Francesco Cossiga were alive). The fourth period was from 18 May 1999 to 9 November 2001 (when Giovanni Leone, Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, and Carlo Azeglio Ciampi were alive). The fifth and most recent period was from 15 May 2006 to 17 August 2010 (when Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, and Giorgio Napolitano were alive).
- Giovanni Gronchi was the only person to be both an only living president (from 30 October 1961 to 11 May 1962) and one of the 4 living presidents (from 29 December 1971 to 1 December 1972).
- There have been 5 administrations during which a president has not died, the most recent being the administration of Oscar Luigi Scalfaro.
- Conversely, only during the administrations of Giovanni Gronchi, Francesco Cossiga, Giorgio Napolitano, and Sergio Mattarella has there been as many as two deaths during an administration.
- Giuseppe Saragat holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of a president during his term (7 years and 0 days).
- The longest period between deaths of presidents was the 11 years and 258 days between the deaths of Sandro Pertini on 24 February 1990 and Giovanni Leone on 9 November 2001. The shortest was the 1 year and 258 days between the deaths of Giuseppe Saragat on 11 June 1988 and Sandro Pertini on 24 February 1990.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no president must die before 8 June 2035 (the only surviving president, Sergio Mattarella, would then be 94 years old).
- The second longest period is the 11 years and 32 days between the deaths of Luigi Einaudi on 30 October 1961 and Antonio Segni on 1 December 1972.
- Following their administrations' end in 1962 and 1978 respectively, Giovanni Gronchi and Giovanni Leone lived to see a record 4 administrations prior to their deaths in October 1978 and November 2001 respectively. Giuseppe Saragat and Francesco Cossiga follow with 3 administrations after their own administrations ended in 1971 and 1992 respectively.
- If one includes future as well as past and current presidents, the record sits at 12:
- Between Sergio Mattarella's birth on 23 July 1941 and Enrico De Nicola's death on 1 October 1959, the following presidents were alive: Enrico De Nicola, Luigi Einaudi, Giovanni Gronchi, Antonio Segni, Giuseppe Saragat, Giovanni Leone, Sandro Pertini, Francesco Cossiga, Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Giorgio Napolitano, and Sergio Mattarella.
- Since the death of Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on 16 September 2016 (a period of 8 years, 68 days), there have been no more than three presidents living.
Oldest living presidents of Italy[edit]
Not all presidents live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 11 deceased presidents, 8 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 3 did not. Giovanni Gronchi became the oldest living president when Luigi Einaudi died in 1961 and remained so until his death in 1978, for a record 16 years and 252 days. Enrico De Nicola became the oldest living president when he was inaugurated in 1948, but he held this distinction for only 132 days.
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 91 years, and 51 days. Giuseppe Saragat, who was 89 years, and 266 days old when he died was the oldest president to die without ever acquiring this distinction. Francesco Cossiga, who was 82 years, and 22 days old when he died on 17 August 2010 is most recent president to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
