Living heads of state in different periods of history (1879-present)[edit]

There have been two time periods when there was only one living head of state, first with the inauguration of Prince Alexander Batenberg in 1879, and most recently during the reign of Ferdinand I of Bulgaria following the 1893 death of Alexander Batenberg. There have been three time periods when five heads of state (the incumbent and four former heads of state) co-existed, including the current period.
