List of Sonic the Hedgehog comic book characters

This article lists the fictional characters in Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. Characters in the comics tend to have three separate origins; some of the characters originated from the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series (although technically appeared in the comic first), some originate from the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and the rest were created strictly for the comic.

Many of the characters in the third category have come under copyright dispute, and thus have ceased to appear in the comics from issue #244 onwards, after one of the previous writers, Ken Penders, instigated legal action claiming ownership over all his prior work on the comic and concepts held within it. As a result, the comic underwent a soft reboot, wiping most of the affected characters from existence, creating a clean slate for a new continuity that was unconnected to the past legal issues, but was still a continuation of the old universe.

Freedom Fighters

Many of the main protagonist characters are part of the Freedom Fighters, a group of rebels openly opposing the tyrannical oppression of Doctor Eggman. They have also come up against various other foes in their efforts. Their main base of operations is the battleship Skypatrol, designed by Tails and Rotor as an answer to Eggman's own air base, the Death Egg Mark 2.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Main article: Sonic the Hedgehog (character)

Sonic is a 15 year old blue hedgehog and the star of the comic.

In the old continuity, as a child his parents were made into robotic slaves by the despotic Dr. Robotnik, losing their free will and forced to serve in his robot armies. After this, Sonic was raised by his uncle, Sir Charles, or as he refers to him, "Uncle Chuck". In this continuity, Uncle Chuck is responsible for creating Sonic's trademark red shoes, which are one of a kind, because Sonic's speed would cause him to wear through his other shoes too quickly.

He later met Princess Sally Acorn, leader of the Knothole Forest Freedom Fighters. With a common goal of revenge against Dr. Robotnik, and freedom against his tyranny, they teamed up, forming the Freedom Fighters. After defeating Robotnik in the 50th milestone issue 'Endgame', rescuing his parents, Sonic continued his adventures until an alternate universe version of Robotnik, Dr. Eggman, travailed to Mobius and took over his quest for global conquest.

Since then, Sonic has battled against Dr. Eggman, his nemesis, with only few reprieves. Sonic also became the mortal enemy of many various other villains, such as Ixis Naugus or the Iron Queen.

In the old continuity, Sonic had a complicated romantic life, first participating in a Will They/Won't They dynamic with Princess Sally throughout the early comics, Sonic also showed romantic interest in various other partners, such has Mina Mongoose and Fiona Fox. All of these relationships eventually broke down for different reasons, he remains single.

Post Genesis Wave, Sonic is still part of the Freedom Fighters, battling his long time nemesis Dr. Eggman, who was never an alternate universe iteration in this timeline. In this continuity most of the canon from the video games are also incorporated into his history, except specific titles, such as Sonic Unleashed which was adapted into the comic directly.

Sally Acorn

Princess Sally Acorn, also known as Sal, age 15, is a tan colored chipmunk and leader of the Freedom Fighters. She is heir in line to the throne of the Kingdom of Acorn.

In the original continuity, as a child Sally saw the evil Dr. Robotnik overthrow her father's kingdom and cast him into the Zone of Silence. She escaped, and banded together with some of her childhood friends to form the Freedom Fighters, vowing to save her father and restore his rightful place on the throne.

Robotnik viewed her as a core threat in the Freedom Fighters, as she was an expert strategist and planner, responsible for organizing the resistance against him. Even though she was young, Sally was highly intelligent, expertly trained in martial arts, and independent, but at times she was also short tempered, damnseld often, and could be a bit of a diva.

After Sonic and the Freedom Fighters defeated Dr. Robotnik, Sally eventually liberated her father and tried to settle back into normal royal life. She was put in a position responsible for the restoration of society and fixing the damage caused. This was short lived as soon Dr. Eggman arrived and plunged Mobius back into insurgency.

Sally suffered a mental down-spiral after Sonic was presumed dead, and lost in space for a year, when he returned Sally had a breakdown and greatly damaged her friendship with her fellow Freedom Fighters. These issues were compounded by her father negatively influencing her. After a period of frosty relations, Sally began a period of redemption and reconciliation, where she apologized for her actions and tried to sort out her personal problems. Her friends forgave her and she returned to being a full-time Freedom Fighter again.

Sally was an effective and tactical leader, and that culminated in her deciding to sacrifice herself to stop Dr. Eggman's World Roboticizer. Resulting in her becoming Eggman's robot slave, and the 'traitor' who caused the bad future Silver the Hedgehog was trying to prevent, by killing Sonic the Hedgehog. Which Silver thankfully prevented.

Post Genesis Wave, Sally is still leader of the Freedom Fighters, and has received a significant appearance redesign to make her more inline with SEGA character style. She fights with energy blades that are connected to her glove's wrist bands. Sally was shown to be the most emotionality effected by having her memories restored. She is single, an expert fighter and now has a loving father with restored sanity.

Miles "Tails" Prower

Miles "Tails" Prower, age 8, is an orange two-tailed fox who often plays the role of Sonic's sidekick, though he has starred in many solo adventures. The name "Miles Prower" is a pun on "miles per hour".

Tails looks up to Sonic as a hero, he is his best friend and idol. His nickname "Tails" comes from his signature ability to fly with his two tails, which he often uses to carry people to safety or attacking flying enemies. Tails is also known for his mechanical genius, building things such as airplanes, submarines and robotic helper animals to aid the Freedom Fighters on their missions.

In the original continuity, Tails acted as the junior member of the Freedom Fighters team during the comics early run. This was a large source of frustration to the young fox, as his other teammates would often underestimate his abilities or coddle him, this drove Tails on several occasions to attempt to prove his worth and maturity by going up on adventures alone or attacking Robotnik by himself. His young age and inexperience generally impacted poorly on his performance for the first few years of the comics existence, resulting in Tails having to be rescued when he got in over his head multiple times, and initially he did not possess savant level genius regarding machines. Over time though, Tails learned new skills, and grew in combat ability and respect. He is now recognized as an equal member of the Freedom Fighters team by everyone, but still retains a "little brother" dynamic with Sonic. In modern issue, Tails extremely irate if he feels characters start babying him again or dismiss him for his age.

Tails' father, Amadeus Prower, and his mother, Rosemary Prower, were not present in the earlier issues of the comic, due to their disappearance after Robotnik's takeover. However, in later issues, they are discovered by Sonic to be residing in deep space and later rescued, becoming divisive parental figures to the young boy. Tails also has an uncle, named Merlin, who is a strong wizard and member of the Neo Walkers. Tails had an unrequited romantic crush on ex-Freedom Fighter Fiona Fox, who he first met as a younger robot duplicate of the real Fiona Fox. The real Fiona Fox considered herself too old for a boy like Tails, and Sonic, in an attempt to save the boy from embarrassment, started dating her. This caused Tails a lot of resentment towards Sonic, and culminated in them fighting each other during the House of Cards Arc. Sonic realized he had acted insensitively and apologized, the two eventually forgave each other. Tails kept lingering feelings for Fiona Fox, who had defected to the villainous Suppression Squad, until she attacked him after he tried to appeal to her good nature.

After the Genesis Wave Tails kept most of his current characterization, still being the tech wise Freedom Fighter and Sonic's pal, but a significant portion of his comic history was erased. In the new timeline Tail's video game adventures are all, with few exceptions, canon to the characters history. Tails likes to pilot Sonic's plane, The Tornado.

Antoine D'Coolette

Antoine D'Coolette, also known as Ant or Twan, age 17, is an orange coyote with blond hair. He speaks in a French accent and often mispronounces words or phrases. Antoine wears a military inspired outfit, with inspiration taken from the classic French Legionnaires uniform. In the early comics he was depicted as easily frightened and arrogant, he was shown to be harboring a romantic crush on Sally, and frequently competing with Sonic for her favor. Despite this, he later developed into a brave solider archetype, being chivalrous, self-sacrificing, and fiercely loyal.

Antoine dropped his romantic interest in Princess Sally after Bunnie Rabbot revealed she had a crush on him, the couple dated for a long time, experiencing various highs and lows, such as when Twan's evil doppelganger, Patch, jeopardized their relationship by impersonating Antoine for almost a year. After returning to Mobius and the loss of his father, Antoine realized that life was too short and he couldn't stand to live without his lover, he proposed to Bunnie Rabbot, who accepted and they married almost immediately.

Antoine has no living blood relatives, his mother died in early childhood, and his father, Armand D'Coolette, the highest-ranking officer in the Acorn Kingdom Army, died after he was poisoned by doppelganger Patch. Before his death, he said goodbye to Antoine and his girlfriend Bunnie Rabbot, voicing his approval of their relationship, it would be revealed later that this was despite the Rabbot family having a historic grudge against the D'Coolette family and affiliates of King Acorn.

Prior to the Genesis Wave, Antoine was stuck in a coma, having become a casualty of Metal Sonic's explosive self-destruction in Ant's rescue of Sally's brother, the true king. After the Genesis Wave, Antoine was in perfect health again, with increased combat abilities, but was shocked when Sonic restored his memories of the event. He remains married to Bunnie, is an active member of the Freedom Fighters, and sometimes flies the fighter-plane, The Twister, on missions.

Bunnie "Rabbot" D'Coolette

Bunnie D'Coolette, more commonly known as Bunnie Rabbot, age 16, is a cyborg rabbit with a metallic arm and legs, originally the result of a thwarted attempt by Robotnik's minions to turn her into a robot, later retconned into the prosthetic results of a life saving operation performed by Uncle Chuck after she was injured by Dr. Eggman's forces.

Introduced in Sonic The Hedgehog #3, while being tossed into one of Robotnik's mobile roboticizers by Swatbots, Bunnie is rescued by Sonic and Rotor, who shut down the machine in mid-process. The result is that Bunnie's left arm and lower body are replaced by cybernetics. In gratitude for saving her life, and partially out of reverence for her idol, Sally Acorn, she offers to join the Freedom Fighters. After a long time dating, she eventually married Antoine. Her last name was inspired by her nature as a cyborg rabbit, though it would later be retconned as being her real name, properly pronounced "rab-boh," but purposefully altered by her to reflect her new identity.

Her robotic limbs grant her a certain degree of super-strength, as well as the ability to elevate by telescoping her legs. She also possesses a Mega Man-esque arm cannon attached to her left arm, as well as a shield generator. Complications occur when Bunnie's cyborg half begins to corrode her "living" side. As a price for upgrading her hardware to be more suitable with her organic half, it was believed Bunnie could never be restored to her original form, despite earlier hopes that a cure could be found. Despite this, she came to terms with her condition and finds her mechanical parts useful when completing missions. However, due to Ixis Magic, for a time she was restored to normal, and found herself forced to adjust to being fully flesh and blood again. A massive reshaping of reality soon resulted in her regaining her mechanical limbs.

Bunnie hails from a region known as the Southern Baronies, and her parents died when she was still young. She has a strained relationship with her uncle Beauregard Rabbot, who raised her like a father but held anti-Acorn tendencies. Bunnie eventually ran away from home after he told her that her parents had died fighting against the royal family. Years later, she would find her uncle as Grandmaster of one of Eggman's Dark Egg Legion chapters, and after a tense reunion bid him farewell once again. However, prior to the alterations to reality she apparently visited him again, seeking comfort after Antoine ended up in a coma and she found herself hampered by the loss of her robotic limbs.

She speaks with a southern accent, frequently referring to other characters as "Hon'" or "Sugah". The southern theme eventually spread to her wardrobe as well, with her wearing a cowboy jacket with tassels and cowboy hat. She was also seen carrying a pair of revolvers as part of this change, but they were dropped after a couple of issues. Bunnie also has long hair that she wears either in a ponytail or hanging freely. Following the changes to reality, she apparently dropped her jacket and hat, and started wearing a glove on her organic hand.

Nicole the Holo-Lynx

Nicole is a sentient AI program who regularly takes the holographic form of a lynx and is best friends with Sally Acorn.

In the old continuity, Nicole was created in an alternate future by Rotor, at the request of this future's Sally, and sent back in time to assist her past-self.

For most of the comics lifetime Nicole helped the Freedom Fighters from the confines of her handheld computer format, her core duties involving things such as relaying information and breaking codes. While cold and robotic at first, Nicole develops a cool and sassy personality as the beginning signs that she is more than a piece of hardware. She is constantly carried around by Sally on her missions, and quickly forms a bond with her. Later she becomes envious of Sally's physical body, and in one issue takes control over Sally's body for a day, experiencing what it feels like to be alive for the first time. Afterwards she develops a complex simulated body she could to interact with the real world, it was successful but Nicole could only stay in that form for very brief periods as it was too power intensive and left her open to hackers. As an alternative she normally just limits it to an on-screen avatar.

Nicole can interface with other mechanical systems, allowing her to access and download information or even provide the Freedom Fighters with control over various unfriendly technologies. Nicole's computer incarnation also comes equipped with a low power laser, which can be used to cut through metal.

In later issues, she becomes the central control program for a computerized "Nanite" city, making her virtually omnipotent within the limited area. Her new abilities at this point, aside from being able to project her holographic body continuously, included control over all the energy shields protecting the city, the ability to weaponize anything made of Nanites and the power to teleport herself from any point of the city to another. She also had the ability to almost immediately repair any damage sustained to the city and create new structures on a whim.

This became an issue when the Iron Queen used her technology controlling magic to take over Nicole, turning her into Iron Nicole. Resulting in the capture of New Mobotropolis and terrorizing of the citizens trapped within. Nicole eventually broke free of the Iron Queens' mind control, covertly helping the citizens where she could but unable to reveal she was free else risking she get put under the same Magitek.

Later, Ixis Naugus capitalized on the mistrust that had grown against Nicole since that incident, and with his power and the unwitting assistance of Mina Mongoose, caused Nicole to be banished from New Mobotropolis entirely. This event, along with the heroic sacrifice of Princess Sally, caused Nicole to spiral into a sever depression. After talking with Mina about her fears and feelings, they forgave each other and Mina successfully hatched a plan to get Nicole accepted again by her city.

Post Genesis Wave, Nicole's personality has remained largely the same, but importantly she is no longer composed of Nanites, and nor is the Kingdom of Acorn, thus considerably reducing her power and abilities. She draws most of her energy from Power Rings, meaning she can only keep a physical holographic form intact for a limited time span. This comes with the tradeoff of increased mobility, instead of being confined to one city, she travels the world with the rest of the Freedom Fighters.

Rotor Walrus

Rotor, also known as Boomer, age 17, is a purple colored walrus who serves as the Freedom Fighter's Battle-Mechanic.

Prior to the Genesis Wave Rotor specialized as the team's main engineer and technician, until Tail's prodigy skills in the area of machines became apparent.

Rotor was born in the city of Iceborough on Walrus Island, part of the Northern Tundra. As a young child, Rotor's family immigrated to Mobotropolis seeking a better life. When Dr. Robotnik took control of the city, Rotor's father, an accomplished military veteran, stayed to fight for the resistance and died. Rotor got separated from his mother and baby brother, who returned to Walrus Island, while he joined the newly formed Freedom Fighters and hid in Knothole Village.

As a Freedom Fighter, Rotor was a trusted friend to everyone who knew him, but got easily exasperated when others around him were acting foolish. He created many of Knothole Village's surveillance and security systems, and had a big affinity for weaponry, especially guns. On the field, Rotor was a bit clumsy although generally competent, his biggest problem was his weight and general lack of athleticism. Many of Rotors inventions were critical in the success of the Freedom Fighters missions, for example using the "Neutralizer" to free King Acorn from the Zone of Silence. Although rarely seen, Rotor was a skilled pilot.

Rotor repeatedly traveled to the Northern Tundra to help free his family, who had been captured along with the rest of the Walrus population, brainwashed into serving Dr. Robotnik, and later Dr. Eggman.

For the year Sonic spent in space, Rotor spent most of it building more powerful and more lethal weapons as a precaution against Dr. Eggman. During this endeavor Rotor accidentally harmed his good friend Larry Lynx, resulting in Rotor experiencing a huge change in attitude towards weapons. In his grief Rotor vowed he would never make weapons again, but would later feel that he hypocritically betrayed this promise after her helped build the Metal Sonic Trooper in the defense of Knothole. Rotor eventually realized his attitude was too extreme, and moderation was the key.

In an attack on Freedom HQ, Rotor permanently injured his back saving Tails from falling debris, this resulted in severely reduced capacity to perform as a Freedom Fighter, and caused him depression. Unable to work on the battlefield, Rotor decided the best way he could make a positive difference was by joining the newly formed Council of Acorn as an elected official. Rotor had many serious disagreement with the decisions of this council, and eventually resigned in protest when they voted to exile Nicole from the city.

During his time in government Rotor secretly developed a nanite power suit, called Iron Rotor, that compensated for his back injury and gave him several new powers. This encourage Rotor to rejoin the Freedom Fighters as an active member of the field team. After Sally was roboticized, the Freedom Fighters split into two groups and Rotor became the leader of Team Freedom, who's main focus was the protection of New Mobotropolis.

After the Genesis Wave Rotor's crippling back injury is no longer present, but he also no longer has access to his Iron Rotor suit. Rotor experienced a significant redesign, becoming physically larger, more toned and losing his fat stomach. After receiving his memories from Nicole Rotor was stressed out, but remained his composure. His love for weapons has remained strong.

Amy Rose

Main article: Amy Rose

Amy Rose is a 12 year old tomboyish pink hedgehog who fights with her signature weapon the "Piko Piko Hammer" (sometimes called the Love Hammer).

In the old timeline Amy was a latecomer to joining the Freedom Fighters, starting off as a relatively minor character in the comic's large cast, after many years she gradually became an important main character who regularly appeared in stories. She first showed up in the comics during Sonic the Hedgehog #25, she initially appeared as she looked in the classic era Sonic videogame Sonic CD.

Amy was born in the faraway land of Mercia into a noble household, but did not pick up any of the linguistic traits that defined the region. Amy was cousins with the true king of Mercia, King Robert O'Hedge, who at age 9 sent her away, after Dr. Robotnik roboticized her parents and took control of Mercia, to live in the safe-haven that was Knothole Village. After hearing of Sonic's daring exploits in Knothole, Amy quickly became infatuated with the idea of Sonic, even deciding she wanted to marry him.

From early on Amy expressed a desire to join the Freedom Fighters, mostly to be closer with Sonic, but was rejected because of her young age and inexperience. Seeking to change this, Amy then asked for a wish from the magical "Ring of Acorns" to make her more mature, this worked, making her appear physically older, and updated her design to her modern video game incarnation, but due to mentally still being the same age, she was again rejected from joining.

Despite this setback, Amy participated on a number of adventures, such as saving E-102 Gamma, fighting the monster Chaos, traveling to Mercia and Albion, and defending Fort Acorn in the war against the Xorda. After roughly a year, with much more experience under her belt, Amy was officially made a member of the Freedom Fighters.

From then on Amy participated in many missions, acting as a bruiser of the team. Amy continued her aggressive affection for Sonic, performing rigorous training to become the best member of the team so he would notice her, and he would be the only one good enough for her. At times she displayed deep jealousy towards other girls who received Sonic's attention, but still remained good friends with Sally Acorn. After Fiona Fox cheated on Sonic with Scourge, Amy attacked Fiona for her betrayal.

Amy became a mentor figure towards Cream the Rabbit, and made good friends with Blaze the Cat, they teamed up to help save the Sol Dimension. After Princess Sally was roboticized, Amy joined up with Sonic and Tails to form Team Fighters, traveling across Mobius to stop Dr. Eggman.

After the Genesis Wave Amy was transported to the Sol Dimension and helped Blaze finally restore her planet and fight against the nefarious Captain Metal. After she was transported back to Mobotropolis Amy received her memories of the old universe back by touching Nicole. In this new universe not much has chained about Amy's personality but her backstory is drastically different, all of her video game appearances, bar few exceptions, are now canon parts of her history.

Main Villains

Dr. Eggman

Main article: Doctor Eggman

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is the primary villain of the comic media. In Japan, he was always referred to as "Eggman", where as, however, for English language audiences, they used the "Dr. Robotnik" name. However, by 1999's Sonic Adventure, he began to be referred to as "Eggman", and from that point on, he was retconned into being named "Eggman" in all regions.

In the comic's premise, he is a War General who betrays and overthrows King Maximillian. He takes over the city, banish the King to another dimension, and uses the "roboticizer", to turn the populace into mindless robot servants. The comic's first fifty issues involve the Freedom Fighters efforts in opposing his oppression, culminating with Sonic finally defeating him. However, by issue #75, his role is replaced by a robot version of himself from another dimension, which served as a device to reintroduce him under the "Eggman" name. Eventually, a race called the "Bem" turn him back into a human as well. Both incarnations have been depicted as much more sadistic than their game counterpart, having wiped out countless inhabitants of Mobius. Eggman's main base is currently the Death Egg Mark II.

Heroes

Blaze the Cat

Main article: Blaze the Cat

A princess from another dimension, Blaze the Cat is based on the character from the games Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure. As Guardian of the mystical Sol Emeralds, she commands their fire-based power, which she regards as both a gift and a curse. In the comic, Blaze was tormented by dreams of an evil that threatened the Sol Emeralds, as well as by images of Sonic. Determined to find the reasoning behind these visions, she traveled to Sonic's dimension, and after a brief encounter with Sonic returned home. She and Sonic would later meet again, this time joined by their sidekicks Tails and Marine the Raccoon, and fight against evil robot pirates created by the evil Dr. Nega.

Blaze would encounter other denizens of Sonic's world as well, beginning with Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic, the latter of whom Shadow helped her to destroy. Returning to Sonic's world, she would meet Shadow again, though this time he and the other members of Team Dark came into conflict with her allies on Team Rose and two other criminal teams in an effort to claim one of the scattered Sol Emeralds. After reconciling, Shadow allowed her to take the Emerald back to her world, and Blaze later appeared in the Mega Man crossover, first as the evil robot Blaze Woman and then as her normal self, fighting first against and then alongside Sonic and his other allies. Afterwards, she and the members of Team Rose would reunite in a quest to recover the final Sol Emerald.

Big the Cat

Main article: Big the Cat

A large, purple Cat with a pet frog named Froggy and an enthusiasm for fishing, Big appeared in the comic series after being introduced in the game Sonic Adventure. Somewhat slow but undoubtedly heroic, Big has come to the aid of Sonic and his friends a number of times, lending his immense physical strength to their fight against evil. For a time Big served as a member of Team Freedom, a Freedom Fighter team formed after various losses caused the Knothole Freedom Fighters to dissolve and reform into two new groups. Following the Mega Man crossover, he returned to his jungle homeland but remained a consistent ally.

Chaotix

The Chaotix are a group of detectives.

Charmy Bee

Charmy Bee is the prince of the Golden Hive Colony, who left home at a young age because he didn't wish to accept his royal responsibilities. He eventually traveled to Angel Island, where he became a member of the Chaotix. After a number of adventures, the death of his childhood friend Mello the Bee caused him to rethink his decision and return home. He remained there for some time, becoming engaged to Saffron Bee, until Dr. Eggman invaded and conquered the colony, forcing the pair to flee to the Kingdom of Acorn and rejoin the Chaotix.

Charmy and Saffron served as air support for the Chaotix on many occasions, and fought hard despite their past tragedies. However, fate dealt Charmy another cruel blow when he and the rest of Knothole's inhabitants were captured by Dr. Eggman. Imprisoned in a memory-erasing, lifeforce-draining Egg Grape, Charmy was subjected to its effects and was reduced to a childlike mentality (an effort to make him more similar to his game counterpart). Escaping, he continued to serve on the Chaotix, aiding his friends and searching for any survivors of his lost kingdom.

Vector the Crocodile

Vector the Crocodile is the leader of Team Chaotix, and serves as Knuckles' right hand man in the larger team. Originally from the continent of Downunda, he left and moved to Angel Island, where he became one of Knuckles' earliest friends. After the Chaotix were formed, he continued to assist Knuckles in defending the island, though the two would occasionally clash due to their hot tempers. Vector would also develop a rivalry of sorts with Julie-Su, who attacked him the first time they met, especially as she and Knuckles developed a romantic relationship. Despite this, Vector remained a stalwart ally of Knuckles, and even underwent strength-training in order to become a more adept fighter.

Espio the Chameleon

Espio is a ninja. He has high skills in martial arts, can change his skin color and use his tongue for combat purposes.

Cream the Rabbit & Cheese the Chao

Introduced in the Sonic Advance games, Cream is the daughter of Vanilla, and keeps a Chao named Cheese as a pet. Originally living in a region known as the Southern Baronies, they eventually relocated to the city of New Mobotropolis after their home was destroyed in a battle between Amy Rose and Snively Robotnik. From that time forward, with her mother's reluctant permission, Cream and Cheese became increasingly involved in the troubles of their new home. Along with her new friend Amy, whose unladylike behavior Cream hoped to smooth out, the young Rabbit ended up making a new friend in Blaze the Cat, and the trio ended up working together to recover one of Blaze's Sol Emeralds.

Eager to help out, Cream became the junior member of Team Freedom, usually serving as a messenger while the rest of the team fought or handled other responsibilities. In the process of this, she came across Tails Doll, which she initially mistook for a lost toy. After a series of incidents caused by the robot, Cream guessed at its true nature, and with her teammates set a trap for it. Subsequently, Team Rose would reunite in a bid to recover the last Sol Emerald from a group of robot pirates.

Knuckles the Echidna

Main article: Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles the Echidna age 16, is frequently described as "Sonic's Friendly Nemesis". While ultimately a protagonist, he tends to fight with Sonic when their egos clash. However, when a serious threat arises, they don't hesitate to team up, at times to help save each other from evil influences. Knuckles' history is much more developed in the comics, including the existence of others of his race that he was initially unaware of, including a lengthy family line that consists of previous Guardians known as the Brotherhood. Sadly, several of his distant relatives would also become his enemies, in the form of the leadership of the Dark Legion.

Marine the Raccoon

A character featured in the game Sonic Rush Adventure, Marine is the constant companion of Blaze the Cat. A self-styled captain, she met Sonic and Tails after the pair ended up in her world under mysterious circumstances, and joined up with them and Blaze against the local robot pirates. She continued to accompany Blaze, helping her and Shadow against Metal Sonic though proving something of a nuisance. Later, she would team up with Blaze and the other members of Team Rose in order to reclaim the last Sol Emerald from the same Metal Sonic, reborn as the monstrous pirate Captain Metal.

Marine is considered a fairly annoying character among fans, and is portrayed as such in the comic, both in the actual storyline and in various comedic strips.

Mighty the Armadillo

Mighty the Armadillo is an incredibly powerful being who was born in Mercia. He grew up with outlaw parents and a younger sister named Matilda, and after his parents were arrested, he goes to Mammoth Mogul in the hope of gaining the strength to save them. Though he was given help, he fails to save them, and Mogul erases his memory of who gave him his powers. Wandering in exile, Mighty eventually meets and befriends Sonic and Ray, and he later joins the Chaotix.

Ray the Flying Squirrel

Ray the Flying Squirrel is one of Sonic's friends, the two having met each other and Sonic before joining the Chaotix. After briefly being imprisoned by Dr. Robotnik, Ray was caught in a time warp, but was later found and rescued by Mighty. Since then he has served as a member of the Chaotix, aiding them in their battles against various villains despite his somewhat timid and fearful nature.

Ray, like Mighty, debuted in the video game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, which was his only appearance in a Sonic the Hedgehog game.

Team Dark

E-123 Omega

Main article: E-123 Omega

E-123 Omega was introduced in the video game Sonic Heroes, and as in the game was placed in storage by Dr. Eggman. However, while irked by this delayed debut, Omega obeyed Eggman's orders to embark on his first mission: the elimination of the rogue Gamma. Meeting Shadow and Gamma, Omega briefly engaged them both, determined to destroy the older model robot. While he put up a good fight, Gamma realized that he had been rendered obsolete, and determined that G.U.N. required a more powerful ally. Copying the "free will" programming he had developed, he uploaded it to Omega just before being destroyed by him. Now possessed of a conscience, Omega forsook Eggman and accompanied Shadow back to G.U.N., joining him and Rouge the Bat as a member of Team Dark.

Rouge the Bat

Main article: Rouge the Bat

An infamous international thief and spy, Rouge appears in an anti-heroic role within the comics much as she does within the games. Her earliest encounters with the Freedom Fighters swung between cooperation and confrontation, depending on which villain she happened to be working with or against. Despite her criminal behavior, however, she does have an active conscience, and has at times changed allegiances upon recognizing the true evil of her employer. She remains scheming and opportunistic, however, particularly in her efforts to manipulate Knuckles the Echidna and get between him and his girlfriend, Julie-Su.

Following various independent adventures, Rouge briefly teamed up with the Chaotix and Freedom Fighters before becoming a full-time agent of G.U.N., partly to pay off her considerable debt to society. In this new endeavor, she was teamed up with Shadow and E-123 Omega, becoming the leader of Team Dark. Subsequently, the group would go up against various foes, including Nack the Weasel's Team Hooligan, the Babylon Rogues, and the heroic Team Rose.

Shadow the Hedgehog

Main article: Shadow the Hedgehog

A Hedgehog with black and red fur with a white patch on his torso, Shadow is a recurring rival of Sonic's in the comic series as he is in the games. As in Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow was created by Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Dr. Eggman, with the aid of the alien Black Doom. and turned into a tool of revenge against Sonic's world after Gerald lost his granddaughter Maria. Awakened from stasis by Dr. Eggman, he briefly pursued an agenda of vengeance, but was eventually convinced to help save the planet. As a result, he seemingly perished, but as in the games survived; however, his storyline subsequently entered the regular continuity of the comic series.

Shadow's relationship with Sonic and the other heroes has ranged from cautiously friendly to outright hostile, depending on the situation. While he has helped them face various threats, he also briefly pledged allegiance to Dr. Eggman in hopes of discovering what he was truly created to do. After learning of the threat of the Black Arms, Shadow renounced Eggman and joined the Guardian Unit of Nations (G.U.N.) to help protect the world from these invaders and from other threats. In the process, he was eventually teamed with Rouge the Bat and later E-123 Omega, the group becoming known as Team Dark.

Silver the Hedgehog

As in the games Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Sonic Rivals, Silver the Hedgehog is a white-furred Hedgehog with powerful psychic abilities. Hailing from a badly ravaged future, Silver travels back in time in an effort to correct this damage. The fragmented history of Silver's time leads him to believe that Sonic or one of his teammates will eventually betray the team, leading to a chain of events that brings about Silver's future. As such, he makes several trips into the past to thwart the "traitor", often seeking to eliminate him or her before they can betray the others. This results in failed attempts on the lives of Sonic and Rotor, following which Silver would return to his own time to conduct further research after being convinced that neither was responsible.

Mentored by two decrepit Mobians-an aged and seemingly repentant Mammoth Mogul and Edmund, a descendant of Knuckles-Silver would also visit two alternate "past" realities and help two teams of Freedom Fighters against their respective enemies. Eventually, he made his final trip into the past, determined to remain there until he found and stopped the traitor. After incorrectly accusing Antoine, who at the time was comatose, Silver was approached to join the Secret Freedom Fighters. Contributing his powers to the team in exchange for help in his search, he helped the group thwart a scheme of Ixis Naugus' before joining Sonic, Amy, and Tails to rescue Sally Acorn, who had been turned into the evil Mecha Sally. Explaining that Sally's actions as an enslaved robot had been misidentified as betrayal, Silver aided the group in subduing her, only to be caught up in the effects of the reality-altering Genesis Wave. As a result, he took part in the Mega Man crossover, briefly as the evil robot Silver Man and then as his usual self.

Crazy Kritter Freedom Fighters

The Avalon Freedom Fighters are group of Mercians led by Bow Sparrow against Eggman's new-sub boss Mordred Hood. Originally formed as the Crazy Kritter Freedom Fighters the group was the local resistance against the High Sheriff, and it is located in Deerwood Forest. However tragedy fell as every single member, with the exception of their leader and king, Robert O'Hedge, was roboticized by the Sheriff. They were later de-roboticized; during this time, Rob also met and married an Echidna woman named Mari-An, with whom he had a son named Jon. Following massive alterations to Mobius, the group continues to fight against Mordred Hood under Bow's leadership.

They are all based on the tale of Robin Hood, particularly the Merry Men. Other members include Bow Sparrow, who takes over the group after Rob leaves with his family to keep them safe; Friar Buck, a pacifist who keeps records of the kingdom intact; Munch Rat, a brawny fighter; Alan Quail a warbler that usually sings songs; and Thorn the Lop, a polite fighter.

Villains

Badniks

Badniks are robots, mostly based on animals, of Dr. Robotnik that are built to do his biddings, and destroy anyone who opposes him, primarily Sonic and the Freedom Fighters. They appeared more prominently in earlier issues of the comic, as a more light-hearted foe, opposed to swatbots, who are darker and more serious. They are based on enemies from the Sega Genesis era of Sonic video games. Badniks include Scratch (rooster) and Grounder (mole) who commonly work together, Coconuts (monkey), Crabmeat (crab), Caterkiller (caterpillar), Burrobot (digging animal of sorts), Jaws, (shark), Motobug (insect on a wheel), Bat Brain (bat), Ballhog (pig), Splats (rabbit), Orbinaut (purple ball with sharp shapes orbiting it), Buzzbomber (hornet), Newtron (chameleon), among others.

Badniks also include more powerful robots, including several versions of Silver Sonic (robotic imitations of Sonic usually much larger than Metal Sonic). Two subgroups exist in this category: the Metal Series and the E-100 Series. The Metal Series consists of Metal Sonic-esque robots modeled after other Mobians, namely: Metal Knuckles, Metal Tails, Metal Amy, and Metal Scourge. The E-100s consist primarily of robots featured from the videogame Sonic Adventure: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Epsilon, Delta, and Zeta. However, the comics have also seen the inclusion of new additions: Eta and Theta, though the latter has only been mentioned in online material and in the 30 Years Later alternate future storyline.

Black Arms

An evil race of aliens introduced in the videogame Shadow the Hedgehog, the Black Arms appear in a similar role in the comics. Here, their leader Black Doom assisted Gerald Robotnik in creating Shadow, unaware that Gerald secretly intended Shadow to be the planets' defense against the vile aliens. The Black Arms subsequently departed, intending to return for world conquest in fifty years time. In the old timeline, their plans were halted as they ended up in the midst of a stalemated intergalactic war with the Xorda, another villainous alien race, preventing their return. In the new timeline, events transpired more inline with what occurred in the videogame.

Sonic Universe's Shadow Fall arc had the Black Arm's return with Black Death, an alien general who was conquering another planet during the events of the original invasion, leading a secondary invasion on the New Black Comet, with the remaining hive-mind army created by Black Doom, their purpose being one of revenge and rebuilding their near extinct race by consuming the world's resources. They never reached their target destination as Team Dark and a G.U.N. squad intercepted their New Black Comet and destroyed it, killing Black Death and nearly wiping out all remaining Black Arms, save the few unborn members that still existed in Eclipse's nursery.

Captain Metal

Captain Metal was the leader of a rogue band of robotic pirates that plagued Blaze's home planet in the Sol Dimension. He was shown to be incredibly callous, carelessly attacking his own crew, beheading dissenters and even implied to have deliberately killed the robot doctor who saved his life at sea for a boat. Captain Metal wanted to take the Sol Emeralds for himself to start a reign of global conquests, willing to sacrifice the Sol Zone which was dying without its emeralds, so that he could travel to different dimensions with them and conquer planets anywhere he wanted.

Captain Metal liked to outfit and upgraded himself with hardware he took off his fallen robotic adversaries. He was shown to have the ability to quickly change his form with different mechanical parts, transforming himself into a menacing crab-like configuration for battle. Burning Blaze destroyed Captain Metal's body in a barrage of fire, but his mind seems to have survived in the sunken wreckage of his ship, the Egg O' War.

Although not directly confirmed, it is strongly implied that Captain Metal is the remains of the same Metal Sonic who Blaze and Shadow originally fought in The Shadow Saga, the first issue of Sonic Universe.

Eclipse the Darkling

Eclipse is a member, and oldest living survivor, of the almost extinct alien race called the Black Arms. He was created by Black Death specifically to destroy Shadow the Hedgehog, the entity responsible for foiling the Black Arm's original invasion and destroying their leader, Black Doom. Eclipse was bio-engineered with special abilities tailored to fighting Shadow; he can prevent Chaos Energy based attacks, has mastery of Chaos Control himself, has limited mind-control capacities over those he has a mental connection with, plus the ability to transform himself into a much stronger version for a brief period of time. Eclipse is also almost unique among the Black Arms race in that he has free will, not controlled by the hive-mind.

Despite his design purpose, Eclipse initially did not want to kill Shadow the Hedgehog, who he believed could be a valuable asset to his endangered race if persuaded to join the Dark Arms again, and also believed they had a family like bond due to the nature of their births, considering Shadow his brother of sorts. After Shadow and his teammates killed Black Death and destroyed the New Black Comet, Eclipse was inconsolable and swore revenge on the hedgehog.

Metal Sonic

Main article: Metal Sonic

Metal Sonic is a name applied to several robots created by Dr. Robotnik and his successor, Dr. Eggman. Robotnik's Metal Sonic was the first, and underwent a great deal of development. He was pitted against Sonic himself and later against Knuckles the Echidna and the Chaotix. Despite being defeated, he recovered thanks to his magical Power Gem core, which also caused him to develop a personality of his own. He returned to take revenge on Sonic, but ended up saving his enemy's life instead, seemingly perishing in a volcanic eruption. However, his core survived and was later used to recreate him as Shard, a robotic member of the heroic Secret Freedom Fighters.

Various Metal Sonics have also been built by Dr. Eggman, though they have displayed little or no personality of their own. Despite displaying impressive strength, speed, flight abilities and even being armed with weapons, these Metal Sonic variants typically meet with destruction at the hands of Sonic or his various allies after a handful of skirmishes at most. One such Metal Sonic, however, was later rebuilt into a pirate-themed robot dubbed "Captain Metal." Sonic's Uncle Chuck and teammate Rotor also created an army of 100 Metal Sonics, designated the "Metal Sonic Troopers" that were reprogrammed by A.D.A.M. and had to be destroyed. The current Metal Sonic v3.0 is considered to be the actual Metal Sonic from the games as his design, powers, and personality is more closely based from the games as well as the post genesis wave retcons Metal Sonic as the one from the games and only one.

Tails Doll

Found as an extra character in the video game Sonic R, Tails Doll is a ragdoll-esque robot meant to resemble Miles "Tails" Prower. In the comics, Tails Doll was inserted into the city of New Mobotropolis to undermine the city from within by using the red gemstone attached to its head to disrupt the city's nanites. After several failed attempts, it was confronted by Team Freedom, the city's defenders who were led by Rotor Walrus. The group had learned its true nature thanks to member Cream the Rabbit, but Tails Doll responded by absorbing a number of nanites to take on a monstrous new form. In the altered reality. Tails Doll's monster form was made up of whatever material it absorbed from artificial structures, and it attacked the city of Mobotropolis looking for the dark wizard Ixis Naugus. Sonic and Tails defeated it despite dealing with the sudden changes to reality.

Team Hooligan

Bean the Dynamite

Bean the Dynamite, like Nack the Weasel, originated in a video game, namely Sonic the Fighters. He is based on the playable characters from the game Dynamite Dux, and as such is a green anthropomorphic duck. He wears sneakers and a red neckerchief, and specializes in throwing bombs. He appeared only in Sonic the Fighters in the games, though the game Sonic Generations featured a cameo of him on a wanted poster with his fellow one-shot costar from that game, Bark the Polar Bear.

In the comics, Bean and Bark are a mercenary team, and have worked on occasion with Nack the Weasel (as part of a group called Team Hooligan)-his sister Nic, Nic's old partner Fiona Fox, Mammoth Mogul, Ixis Naugus, a crew of robotic pirates led by a rebuilt Metal Sonic and the Destructix. Bean is also noted as being a former member of the Battle Bird Armada, a group of villainous birds who debuted in the videogame Tails Adventure. Having deserted that group, Bean teamed up with Bark, and the pair have become virtually inseparable. They first engaged Sonic on one of his birthdays, and have since appeared off and on to menace him and his various allies in the comics.

Bean's comic self is known for being utterly insane, with a number of unexplained quirks. He has the tendency to ask weird questions, ascribe strange nicknames to people he meets, and an obsession with shiny objects. He also is apparently able to produce his bombs out of thin air and detonate them as well.

Bark the Polar Bear

Bark the Polar Bear is a character who debuted in the videogame Sonic the Fighters, that game being his only appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. However, he and fellow Sonic the Fighters participant, Bean the Dynamite, later appeared on a wanted poster in Sonic Generations. As his name suggests, Bark is an anthropomorphic Polar Bear with yellow fur, except for a white patch on his chest-a trait shared with a number of characters from the series. He wears brown gloves and boots, a green scarf, and a red winter hat.

In the comics, Bark is Bean's silent partner, the pair always appearing together to menace Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies. This had led them to conflicts with the Knothole Freedom Fighters, Shadow the Hedgehog and his allies from Team Dark, Blaze the Cat, Amy Rose, and Cream the Rabbit, and the Babylon Rogues. As in Sonic the Fighters, Bark is super strong, even in comparison to various established powerhouses in the series.

Nack the Weasel

Nack the Weasel is a purple wolf-weasel hybrid and headhunter for hire. He will do anything for a profit, and will work willingly for high-paying employers or his own agendas. Many times he is hired by Dr. Robotnik or Mammoth Mogul to capture protagonists Sonic, Knuckles, Sally, Mina, or the emeralds.

Nack is disliked by virtually everyone, from his rival and sister Nic to his former partners. Possessing no super abilities, Nack utilizes his Marvelous Queen, an ion-powered air bike, to get around. One of his few useful natural abilities is the power to propel himself high into the air by using his tail like a spring.

Ixis Naugus

Naugus is an anthropomorphic hybrid of bat, lobster, and rhinoceros formed from the fusion of the last surviving members of the Order of Ixis. The wizards, Nusgua, Suguna, and Agunus, were masters of wind, water, and earth magic, but they each desired control over fire. They launched themselves into the sun in hopes of understanding the element, but their fighting caused them to become fused together. Naugus became the court wizard of the Kingdom of Acorn, but like Dr. Robotnik/Eggman had plans to overthrow the king.

Naugus commands all four of the classical elements: earth, air, fire and water, and he has the ability to turn his body into an elemental being composed of any of those elements. His greatest desire is to take control of the unique "fifth element" of Mobius; the Power Ring. While in the Zone of Silence, he gains a magic wand that allowed him to turn his minions into crystalline beings, but it is later destroyed. After a prolonged pursuit, he engaged Sonic and Tails in a super-powered battle, only to be banished back to the Zone of Silence. Escaping, he briefly joined forces with the founder of his order, Mammoth Mogul, but the two parted ways after Naugus was restored to sanity, having lost his mind due to being used by Mogul as a living shield. Naugus then took over the throne of the Kingdom of Acorn after winning the support of the people through manipulation.

However, his health subsequently began to deteriorate as his three component selves were reawakened inside his mind. He attempted to use his dark magic to enslave the city, but was thwarted by the efforts of the Secret Freedom Fighters. With his plans falling apart, he attempted to save himself by possessing another person, eventually claiming his apprentice Geoffrey St. John. However, a drastically altered reality found Naugus himself again, his former selves silenced but his powers lost.

Supporting Characters

King Acorn

Maximillian Acorn is the king of the Kingdom of Acorn, who is initially trapped within the Zone of Silence after Robotnik's takeover. He is joined by Ixis Naugus, who takes control of the king in order for him to survive the conditions of the Zone. He loses his memory, and comes to command an army of goblin-like creature. He is eventually saved by the Freedom Fighters, but the effects of the zone cause him to crystallize, which is later cured by the Sword of Acorn. He rules again for a period of time, though half of his brain still being crystallized forces him to make irrational decisions, and he later retires his position after being poisoned. He is bound to a wheelchair following an accident after finding his lost son, but even though the condition eventually reverses, the poison causes it to reemerge. This would later be undone due to reality being altered, with Maximillian taking on a new appearance reminiscent of Ray the Flying Squirrel.

He was featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog animated series as well, though referred to simply as "the King."

Babylon Rogues

Main article: Babylon Rogues

In the comics, they are initially hired by Dr. Eggman to attack Sonic's hometown of Knothole Village, and end up battling Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, with both sides using Extreme Gear hover boards. Subsequently, they would be revealed as deserters from the Battle Bird Armada, seeking to beat their former comrades to their fabled homeland of Babylon Garden. Their search led to a four way battle with the members of Teams Dark, Rose, and Hooligan over a Sol Emerald, which ended with their defeat.

Some time later, the Rogues found the key to restoring Babylon Garden, only to be press-ganged back into the Armada. They joined in an invasion of the city of New Mobotropolis, beneath which the garden lay buried, only to see the garden destroyed. Leaving the armada once again, the trio set out with new goals in mind. Some time later, it would be revealed that Predator Hawk, another Armada renegade and member of the Destructix, had briefly been a member of their group before leaving to join forces with Mammoth Mogul.

Jet the Hawk

Jet is the impetuous leader of the team, and has a rivalry with Sonic as to which of them is faster.

Wave the Swallow

Wave is the group's mechanic, and is arguably both the wisest and smartest member.

Storm the Albatross

Storm is essentially the dumb muscle of the group, and may harbor a secret crush on Amy Rose.

Ben "Mutt" Muttski

Muttski, a young cream colored dog, is the loyal research assistant to Uncle Chuck. His existence slightly disturbs Sonic, as in the previous universe he remembers Muttski being Sonic's own pet. Muttski is excitable and easily impressed.

Chip

Chip is a maroon colored fairy dog. He loves to eat sweet things. He is the Light Gaia counterpart to Dark Gaia.

Uncle Chuck

Professor Charles, commonly known as "Uncle Chuck" to friends, is a scientist and close associate of the Freedom Fighters. He was the original creator of the Roboticizer, a device intended to heal the sick and injured via replacing damaged body-tissue with mechanical parts, but which was stolen and misused to turn victims into robotic slaves.

In the original timeline, Charles was a solder in the "Great War" with his brother, Jules Hedgehog, and was knighted for his efforts. After his brother was mortally wounded, Charles tested his experimental healing device on him, but it was sabotaged by Julian Kintobor and resulted in Jules' loosing his free-will. Feeling responsible, Sir Charles retired from science and opened a small Chilli Dog Stand. Uncle Chuck raised Sonic the Hedgehog until Dr. Robotnik's military coup, when he was arrested and roboticized with his own creation.

However, Charles' free will is eventually restored, and he acted as an undercover spy for the Freedom Fighters until Robotnik's defeat. He was eventually fully de-roboticized along with everyone else, sans his brother, by the Bem alien race. During the year Sonic was away in space, Charles, along with Rotor Walrus, developed the Metal Sonic Troopers. Sir Charles was elected as a member of the Council of Acorn in New Mobotropolis. He covertly worked to undermine King Naugus by providing technical support to the Secret Freedom Fighters, personally rebuilding Shard the Mecha Sonic.

In the new continuity Professor Charles works with his assistant Ben Muttski on scientific experiments and field research, he is still the creator of the Roboticizer and harbors a great resentment towards Dr. Eggman for stealing his machine. Uncle Chuck was responsible for saving Bunnie Rabbot's life by giving her prosthetic limbs after she was injured. He collaborated with Professor Pickle in determining the cause of a substantial rise in earthquakes, but was kidnapped and lost his research when Eggman attacked.

Uncle Chuck is purported to be the world's greatest Chilli Dog chef.

Coral the Beta

Coral is an orange colored beta fish and serves as priestess in her underwater shrine which also houses many Chao. She is contacted by the spirit of Tikal who tells her that she will need to help some heroes soon to save the world. Later she falls afoul of two warring tribes governments, and becomes a fugitive.

Dulcy the Dragon

Dulcy is a clumsy, young, and somewhat infantile dragon who joined the Freedom Fighters. She often flies the Freedom Fighters to their destinations or rescues them, though she is terrible at landing. She was created for the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon, and then used throughout the comic.

He is eventually found and takes the throne. Sally takes the position as the next in line, so that his children don't have to become involved with his world. He becomes a close ally of the Freedom Fighters, and even goes into battle with them several times. After the destruction of Knothole, he takes reign of New Mobotropolis, though Amadeus Prower opposes him, almost leading to a civil war. Sally manage to calm both sides, and develops a seven member council, with Elias being the head and the other six being elected, that deliberates all future politics of the Kingdom together as equals. He subsequently lost his throne to Ixis Naugus, but determined to take it back from the villain with the aid of his Secret Freedom Fighters.

E-102 Gamma

Main article: E-102 Gamma

E-102 Gamma was introduced in the video game Sonic Adventure, and in the comic has a similar storyline. Initially a mindlessly obedient servant of Dr. Eggman, he came to question his loyalties to the doctor and eventually rebelled. After "freeing" various other robots of the same production line, he began traveling around the world, undermining Eggman's infrastructure. Eventually, its efforts drew the attention of G.U.N., who dispatched Shadow to offer the robot a place in their organization.

G.U.N.

The Guardian Unit of Nations—G.U.N. for short—is an organization that appears in various Sonic the Hedgehog games and eventually made its way into the comics. G.U.N. serves as the military for the human-based United Federation, and thus has at times worked together with the Freedom Fighters to fight Dr. Eggman. Its top officer is Commander Abraham Tower, who was introduced—albeit not by name—in the Shadow the Hedgehog video game. As in the games, G.U.N. employs various robots and soldiers as part of its armed force, and its most valuable asset is the trio known as Team Dark: Shadow the Hedgehog, Rouge the Bat, and E-123 Omega.

Several members of G.U.N. featured in the comic were created by Archie writers. Examples of this are: Hugo Brass, a high-ranking commander; Paladin Team Sigma-Alpha-Two, a five-man elite strike unit; and Hope Kintobor, the half-sister of Snively Robotnik and thus biological niece of Dr. Eggman. With the exception of Hope, all of these G.U.N. operatives were eventually captured by Dr. Eggman, who brainwashed them and fitted them with cyborg implants. Hugo became Grandmaster of a Dark Egg Legion chapter—though he was subsequently replaced with the Iron Queen—while the others became known as the Egg Paladins.

Hope, in contrast, was born in space after her people left Mobius in hopes of finding a new homeworld, only to be forced to return. After losing her father and grandmother to her uncle and unknown half-brother (whom she believed was only her stepbrother), she was taken in by the Knothole Freedom Fighters, and lived in the city of Knothole for some time. At the urging of a seemingly reformed Snively, she visited the United Federation, only to return and find Knothole in ruins. Determined to bring justice upon her evil relatives, she joined up with G.U.N., turning her great technical skills towards helping Team Dark. She later encountered Snively again, and was informed that they were actually blood relatives, a truth that their father had kept from her. However, she turned down his offer to join him against Eggman, remaining determined to restore honor to their family name by standing up to her brother and uncle.

Julian Snively

Doctor Julian Snively, formerly Colin Kintobor Junior, is the long nosed traitor and oftentimes antagonist to Sonic the Hedgehog.

In the old timeline Snively started out as Dr. Robotnik's miserable underling and assistant, as well as his nephew. Snively was constantly abused, teased and intimidated by his uncle, whom he despised and often plotted to overthrow behind his back.

Snively was in love with his girlfriend Regina Ferrum, the Iron Queen, who he met online and bonded with over their mutual dislikes. He and the Iron Queen joined together in control of the Eggman Empire and the Dragon Kingdom's Four Clans after Dr. Eggman was incapacitated by insanity. They attempted to conquer New Mobotropolis but were defeated when they lost control of Iron Nicole and their foot soldiers were convinced to abandon them.

With the fall of the Iron Dominion, Snively returned to his uncle's side for a time, but eventually tired of Eggman's illogical plans and was filled with longing for his imprisoned love. Sneaking off Eggman's Death Egg, he attempted to reunite with both the Iron Queen and his estranged half-sister, Hope Kintobor, but failed in the case of the latter. He fought against Eggman but was captured and imprisoned, replaced with an android duplicate who became the Iron Queen's aide, though she did not recognize it was a fake.

In the new timeline Julian Snively works for G.U.N., he strategized the mission to destroy the New Black Comet, and was upset when he was refused from joining the mission due to trust issues. He has received a significant redesign, with the addition of a mustache and glasses.

Lupe's Wolf Pack

The Wolf Pack is similar in culture to Native Americans, but still function like Freedom Fighters. They once inhabited a city in the mountains that lived in harmony with nature, but that came to an end when Dr. Robotnik's machines destroyed their home. Their original community is split in two, part becoming the Wolf Pack to fight invaders, the other fleeing to find shelter for their pups. Lupe is the leader of the group. She is a kind and sage-minded individual, but her peaceful exterior hides a real warrior. Her. Other member include Reynard, who is especially inquisitive; Canus, who is rather large in stature; Diablo, the group grouch, always picking fights; Leeta and Lyco, a pair of twin pink wolves into acrobatics.

The most controversial members of the Pack, Aerial and Athena are not wolves at all, but a pair of Overlander girls. The two are sisters; Aerial is a blond hair girl who is extremely calm and quiet, as opposed to Athena who has red hair and is mute. They are the lone survivors of a city, and it caused quite an uproar when Lupe brought them into the pack and they became Lupe's adopted children. Additionally, there is Drago, who was once a member of the Wolf Pack, but he betrayed them by teaming up with Dr. Robotnik and became a Special-agent. He was instrumental in arranging Sally Acorn's assassination and the framing of Sonic for her (apparent) murder. As such, he was exiled from the Wolf Pack, eventually teaming up with the Destructix under Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus.

The Pack has seen a number of changes over the years; following Drago's banishment and the addition of Aerial and Athena, the group would also be joined by Lupe's husband, Lobo, and their children, Marcos and Maria. The Pack eventually relocated to their ancestral homeland, and together with other Wolf Tribes established the Wolf Pack Nation. Lupe was named Grand Chief, and thus had to bear the burden of dealing with the neighboring Felidae. To make matters more difficult, she also had to contend with a local Dark Egg Legion chapter led by Drago and the disgraced Felidae Razorklaw. Following a number of clashes with this group-in which Sonic would prove an invaluable ally once again-Leeta and Lyco would leave the pack in order to join the Secret Freedom Fighters in New Mobotropolis.

Omochao

Omochao is a robotic Chao who helps the Freedom Fighters on missions.

Relic the Pika & Fixit the Gizoid

Relic is a blue pika archeologist. She is researching the origins of her robotic partner, Fixit, a very polite helper robot who likes to refer to all his companions in formal titles such as Madam or Sir. Relic is intelligent, quick witted and has penchant for using archaic words when she speaks, but she also has a habit of rambling.

The duo at some point traveled to Angel Island and befriended Knuckles the Echinda, who permitted them to stay on his land. When the world was torn apart during the Sonic Unleashed adaption, Knuckles requested they watch over the Master Emerald in his absence while he hunted down the Light Gaia, Chip.

Rosie Woodchuck

Rosie is a grey-haired groundhog and nanny to Sally Acorn. She was responsible for sneaking Princess Sally out of the castle when Dr. Eggman attacked.

Tikal and Chaos

Introduced in Sonic Adventure, Tikal and Chaos were friends who enjoyed a brief period of peace after meeting each other. That ended when Tikal's father, chieftain of the Knuckles Tribe, came seeking the power to defeat his people's enemies. He ended up bringing harm to the Chao that Chaos protected, and the wrathful creature destroyed the Knuckles Tribe as a result. Desperate to prevent further destruction, Tikal sealed herself and Chaos within the magical Black Emerald (as opposed to the Master Emerald in the games). However, many centuries later, the two would be freed by the machinations of Dr. Eggman.

Determined to prevent another catastrophe, Tikal made contact with Knuckles, Sonic, and the Freedom Fighters, offering them counsel in their efforts to stop Chaos. Fortunately, Sonic was able to quell the anger in Chaos' heart, and he and Tikal departed Mobius again with their Chao friends. They would not be seen again for some time, though Chaos would be captured and used by Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily as part of their plot in the Mega Man crossover. Fused together with Dr. Wily's "Yellow Devil" concept, he was forced to battle Sonic and Mega Man until he was confronted and freed by the powerful Duo.

Vanilla the Rabbit

Vanilla is the mother of Cream the Rabbit. She is often concerned about her daughters safety when out on adventures. She lives with Gemerl the Gizoid and Chocola the Chao.

Heroes

Archimedes the Ant

Archimedes the Ant, nicknamed "Archy" by friends, is the mentor of Knuckles and Locke, and the part of the Fire Ant Council, the ruling body of his race. His focus has traditionally been on Knuckles, particularly in helping him come to terms with how he feels about his role as a Guardian. Archimedes also seems to have no problem letting Knuckles suffer in order to achieve what he feels should be achieved. Versed in magical lore, Archimedes is master of smoke and mirrors and sleight of hand, allowing him to fool even the most clever of enemies. He can also breathe fire.and teleport from place to place in a puff of smoke, and can even teleport others with him if in physical contact with them.

Elias Acorn

Elias Acorn is the prince of the Kingdom of Acorn. His existence is initially unknown to most, as he is thought to have been killed along with his mother by Overlanders. King Acorn doesn't even tell Sally to spare her of the grief of losing someone she had never known. Elias survives the attack, while his mother remains comatose. He is raised by the Guardians of the Floating Island for most of his life, until King Acorn is told of his survival. He wishes to spend time with his family, and he has no real feelings for taking the crown, but he is soon forced into the position after the King is injured. He soon leaves after he cannot take the stress, and leaves to live as a commoner. He marries Megan Acorn and has a daughter named Alexis.

Heavy and Bomb

Created by Dr. Robotnik, Heavy and Bomb defected and worked briefly with the Chaotix. As their names suggest, Heavy is a large, solid humanoid robot, by Bomb is a red orb shape with a face, arms, and legs. He has the ability explode like a bomb, and then later collect himself into form again.

However, they end up leaving the Chaotix, first to join the King's Secret Service, before again leaving that due to being reprogrammed back into being evil, working for Robotnik, then later rebuilt by Rotor to join Team Freedom.

Hershey the Cat

Hershey the Cat, later known as Hershey St. John after marrying Geoffrey St. John, is a female cat with black fur covering her entire body except her face and chest, which are white. Hershey also has green eyes and short black hair, and her wardrobe commonly includes boots and a vest of some sort. Although originally appearing to be an average civilian, it's eventually shown she has fighting and battle experience.

Hershey was originally a pawn in a scheme to kill Sally Acorn when her then boyfriend, Drago, of the Wolf Pack, tricked her into wearing a Sonic the Hedgehog disguise. However, the mask contained eyepieces that caused her to see Snively in place of anyone else. This led to Hershey cutting the rope Sally was hanging from, thinking that Snively was dangling from it. She later learned the truth, and vengefully helped put Drago behind bars She was forgiven, and due to her efforts, joined King Acorn's Secret Service at the behest of Geoffrey.

Hershey goes on to work alongside Geoffrey in multiple assignments, such as locating Prince Elias Acorn and joining in the battle against the Xorda. Hershey and Geoffrey's respect for each other eventually blossomed into love, and the two got married, putting an end to Geoffrey's rivalry with Sonic for Sally's hand. Together, she and Geoffrey headed up the Secret Service from the top floor of the Kingdom of Acorn army headquarters in New Mobotropolis.

Hershey eventually goes missing while on a solo mission in Soumerca, prompting Geoffrey to check up on her. The natives whom she had been living with, claim she had died while working under cover. Geoffrey investigated the scene where she had supposedly died for days but couldn't find her body, presuming she may have in fact died.

Julie-Su

Julie-Su is a former soldier of the villainous Dark Legion, and half-sister of their leaders. She was separated from the legion, joined Knuckles and his friends then she betrayed them in a massive wide scale invasion on Angel Island. Julie-Su was arrested, and kept in jail, but surprisingly was rewarded with her freedom on the condition she join the Chaotix, a decision made by Constable Remington with guidance from Knuckles' father Locke. The Chaotix were surprised and hesitant at first, but eventually accepted her in. She has since defected from the Dark Legion, without much question or resentment from Knuckles. Unfortunately, she is one of several characters to have been taken captive by the villain known as Thrash the Tasmanian Devil. She will not return due to issues with archie and penders.

Lara-Su

Lara-Su was the daughter of Knuckles and Julie-Su from an alternate future timeline. She became a Guardian of the Master Emerald and defeated the tyrant King Shadow, restoring freedom to the world. She also battled Tikchaos when it was set loose with her friends, King Sonic the Hedgehog, Prince Manik Acorn, Princess Sonia Acorn, Melody Prower, Skye Prower, the twins Jacques D'Coolette & Belle D'Coolette, and Argyle the Crocodile whom she had a romantic crush on.

In another timeline where the world was destroyed by the evil Enerjak, Lara-Su took on the alias Jani-Ca and fought her corrupted father in a very one-sided war until Silver the Hedgehog arrived and assisted her band of Freedom Fighters. Afterwards she took the power of Enerjak for herself to restore the world.

Mina Mongoose

Mina Mongoose is a female, yellow mongoose with purple hair. Her character was created for, and exclusively used, in the comic series. She is originally portrayed as a singer seeking the affection of Sonic. She is saved by Sonic after being captured by Eggman's forces. She joins the Freedom Fighters and deals with the depression of losing her mother (killed by Eggman's same forces) by helping them. She is eventually recognized by as a talented singer, and she quickly becomes world famous as her songs help raise morale in the fight against Eggman. During Sonic's absence while adventuring, she begins to date her manager, Ash Mongoose, removing the romantic relationship aspect towards Sonic. Mina has extraordinary speed (which pales in comparison to Sonic), but she lacks control. It was granted to her by Mogul in order to save her mother, though he erases her memory of the event in order to manipulate her in the future. She saved Sally and Sonic from being shot by Nack

Monkey Khan

Monkey Khan, originally named Ken Khan, is a boisterous monkey, who originally lived in a city that attempted to distance itself from war. He believes that he is a good fighter and that totally rejecting violence is impractical due to the risk of war. Soon after, his entire village is captured by Robotnik and used in his experiments to make cyborgs. Nearly the whole clan dies due to the cybernetic implants, although Khan survives, but he is unable to fully follow orders, so he is quickly sealed in a metal crate. He is released years later, and goes off on his own. He resettles in his old village and later seeks revenge on the Overlanders. He later returns to warn the citizens of New Mobotropolis of the Iron Queen taking over the Eggman Empire, but he is temporarily taken over by the Iron Queen's mind control over anything robotic, although Sonic and the rest of the Freedom Fighters rescue him. He then accompanies Sonic, Sally and Tails in the Dragon Kingdom, to liberate New Mobotropolis from the Iron King and Queen.

Rob O' the Hedge

Rob O' the Hedge first appeared when he accompanied Knuckles the Echidna and the Lost Echidna Tribe-whose prophecy referred to him as "the Other", the one person who could bring them home-to Albion. Along the way, he met Mari-An, a female Echidna who was very similar to him in personality. The two bickered, ending in a fight on a nearby log over a creek. Rob was knocked into the creek, and when their eyes again met, they fell in love. After guiding the Lost Tribe to Albion, Mari-An chose to stay with Rob rather than continue on; they married and some time later, Mari-An gave birth to their son, Little Jon.

General D'Coolette was Rob's greatest foe and the one responsible for the Roboticization of Rob's Crazy Kritter Freedom Fighters. Even after the general regained his free will, Rob remained suspicious of him until they finally made amends. He was seen at Amy's Freedom Fighter induction ceremony, commenting on his cousin's "good form", and he participated in the battle against the Xorda. Rob and his team-all Robians having been restored to normal by the alien Bem-continued to protect Mercia from the threat of Dr. Eggman, eventually coming up against Grandmaster Mordred Hood of the Dark Egg Legion, who became their new nemesis. Rob would also accompany Silver the Hedgehog to Moebius, where they two became involved in a battle with six other Hedgehogs, including the evil Scourge. After returning home, Rob apparently took his family into hiding for their own safety, leaving the Freedom Fighters under the command of Bow Sparrow. They disappeared in the vicinity of Never Lake, a fact that was later discovered by Espio of the Chaotix.

Saffron Bee

Saffron Bee is one of Charmy Bee's earliest friends, and his former arranged fiancée. After Charmy leaves the colony to avoid his royal responsibilities, she did not understand his reasons. Upon his return, the pair began dating and were soon engaged, and Saffron even helped Charmy in an effort to save Knuckles from unfriendly Echidnas. After their colony is conquered by Eggman, the pair fled and rejoined Charmy's old friends, the Chaotix. As with other members of her race, she could shrink to insect size and fly, abilities she employed as a member of the Chaotix team. Sometime afterwards, Saffron was among the various characters who was exiled to parts unknown by Thrash the Tasmanian Devil.

A.F.F.

The Arctic Freedom Fighters consist of: Guntiver, a wolf and the leader of the group; Erma, a female ermine who can turn invisible; Sealia, a seal with a French accent, Augustus, a polar bear who is the muscle of the team; and Flip, a penguin who has the ability to slide on ice with his feet. Originally a group of political activists, they became an active Freedom Fighter team after some initial disagreement. Their primary opponents are Dr. Robotnik and later Dr. Eggman's northern forces, most notably the Orca Dark Egg Legion led by Grandmaster Akhlut.

D.U.F.F.

The Downunda Freedom Fighters are a group of Freedom Fighters that function in the Downunda, a continent modeled after real-world Australia. It is led by Walt Wallaby, a male wallaby with a pouch. Other members include Barby Koala, former mercenary and Walt's second-in-command; Wombat Stu, an agile wombat with super hearing; Guru Emu, a pacifistic emu who acts like a hippie; and Duck "Bill" Platypus, the team's feistiest member. The group originally battled against Robotnik's evil robot minion, Crocbot, but were able to defeat him on three occasions with the help of the Knothole Freedom Fighters. The third of these battles also pitted the team against Bill, who briefly betrayed the team due to being brainwashed and later became a double-agent in the Dark Egg Legion, commanding a group of fellow Platypi whom he led as ineffectively as possible. The group also briefly included Thrash the Tasmanian Devil, the last fully functioning member of a mutated race who sought revenge on the present day Echidnas due to their ancestors' role in the decline of his people.

F.F.F.F.

The Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters are a band of aquatic Freedom Fighters, the Forty Fathom group were discovered by Tails during his first solo mission. Members include Ray, a manta ray; Big Fluke, a blue whale who crushes his opponents; Bottlenose, a bottlenose dolphin with undersea ninja skills; Bivalve, a clam who has often made odd cameo appearances in the series; and P.B. Jellyfish, his name being a pun on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Somewhat limited in their interaction with other characters due to being ocean-bound, they have nevertheless proven capable fighters. Their opponents have included Robotnik's underwater lieutenant Octobot; the undersea gangster Eel Capone (based on real-life mobster Al Capone); and a group of Badniks commanded by Pseudo Sonic.

O.F.F.

The Original Freedom Fighters were the ones that formed initially right after Dr. Robotnik first overthrowing the King and becoming a dictator. It was founded and led by tiger Colonel Tig Stripe. Other members included Spot Long, who helped evacuate the city of Robotropolis, Sir Peckers, Private Trey Scales, a snake who would later doublecross the group, and MP Bull Bones, a bulldog who was a role model to Sally Acorn and Sonic the Hedgehog. The group's campaign against Robotnik came to an end when they were all turned into mindless robots and banished to the Zone of Silence.

S.F.F.

The Secret Freedom Fighters are a team assembled by Harvey Who, former director of intelligence for the Kingdom of Acorn, at the request of Elias Acorn, the deposed king. Consisting of former members of other Freedom Fighter groups-Larry Lynx, Leeta and Lyco, a rebuilt version of Metal Sonic named Shard, and Silver the Hedgehog under the leadership of Elias himself, this team works in total secrecy, carrying out black ops missions in their efforts to undermine the rule of the villainous sorcerer Ixis Naugus. Sadly, after successfully thwarting Naugus' attempts to enslave the entire city, the Secret Freedom Fighters would be caught up in massive alterations to reality, leaving their status in question.

Villains

A.D.A.M.

A.D.A.M. (the Autonomous Digital Assault Microbe) is a sentient computer virus created by Dr. Eggman. After getting into some minor conflicts with Sonic, Tails, and Bunnie Rabbot, A.D.A.M. pretends to work for Eggman while acting as a being known as "Anonymous", who manipulates Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus, and various other events. His plan is eventually revealed, and even though Eggman destroys A.D.A.M. main programming, he manages to transfer himself to Tommy Turtle through the use of nanites. He soon sets off to collect all of the Chaos Emeralds with the help of the captured Tails and Shadow the Hedgehog. He eventually does battle with Sonic, Tails, and Shadow in his own Super Form, but after the Emeralds are moved to the "Zone of Silence", he and Tommy are vaporized by the Egg Fleet.

A.D.A.M. has control over Eggman's computer and therefore every robot he owns; he can also spread to other computer systems that connect to Eggman's databases and control them as well, though this control can be compromised if A.D.A.M. is distracted. He also controls an innumerable number of nanites, which he can use to infect and control virtually any mechanical device. Upon taking possession of Tommy Turtle's body, A.D.A.M. gains all the bionic properties granted to Tommy by his shell being fused together with nanites, such as the ability to sprout metallic wings.

Battle Bird Armada

The Battle Bird Armada are a force of villainous birds who were introduced in the videogame Tails Adventure. Prominent members include Battlekukku XV, his son Speedy-a green Bird and Tails' rival-and Doctor Fukurokov, the Armada's chief inventor. The group operated from a flying fortress base in the game, which was carried over into the comic series.

In the comics, the Armada has been linked to several other Bird characters, most notably Bean the Dynamite and the Babylon Rogues from the Sonic Riders series. As a result, they are linked to the ancient Babylonians mentioned in the Riders games, and have the end objective of uniting all Birds under their rule. Their efforts to do so have led them into conflict with Tails and the Freedom Fighters.

Colin Kintobor

Colin Kintobor is Minister of Justice of the Overlanders, and he controls all of their forces. Among the most xenophobic members of his species towards Mobians, he takes great pleasure in wiping out groups of them, including women and children. After he shoots Amadeus Prower in the eye, the Mobians begin to rally, which leads to a quick defeat for his Colin's armies. He escapes into the sewers, where he eventually manages to gather up survivors and flee into space. They eventually accept Robotnik's invitation to return to Mobius and live in Robotropolis, though it is eventually revealed to be a trap. He is roboticized along with three other Overlanders and killed during the destruction of the city.

Dark Legion

The Dark Legion is a group composed of a group of technocratic Echidnas. It is founded by Menniker, the son of Dimitri, who forms the group together with other Echidnas opposed to the ban on technology imposed by the Guardians. They are banished to a realm where time passes differently from Mobius, and they attempt to dominate Angel Island. They are obsessed with technology, and replace much of their bodies with cybernetic implants. After the barrier between the realm and Mobius is dissolved, they make a full on attempt to capture Echidnaopolis. Dimitri eventually makes an attempt to form a truce between the two factions, though the Legion eventually splinters until a truce is called.

When Eggman took over Angel Island, the Dark Legion became the main backbone of the resistance forces, though they suffered severe losses. After a brief civil war and the loss of their technology, the remnants of the organization-under Dimitri and his great-great-granddaughter Lien-Da-joined Eggman under the title of the "Dark Egg Legion", which soon spread to other cyborg enforcer groups that the doctor had formed in other regions. The Echidna chapter was later banished from Mobius by the actions of Thrash the Tasmanian Devil.

Dr. Robotnik

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, formerly Julian Kintobor, not to be confused with alternate timeline double Dr. Eggman was the original primary antagonist of the comic for the first fifty issues up until his death during the milestone Endgame Saga.

Dr. Robotnik took over the most of the known world with his Roboticized armies, Swatbots and Badnik hoards, but could not defeat Sonic and his band of Freedom Fighters hidden deep within the Great Forrest.

Originally a defector from Overlander society, his technological genius gave the Kingdom of Acorn an advantage during the "Great War" and he was eventually promoted to Warlord, after he covertly trapped the previous leader of the military to the Zone of Silence. He personally sabotaged Sir Charles' Roboticizer device to rob users of their free-will, built up a secret army and overthrew King Acorn, capturing the city of Mobotropolis and starting his ten year reign of tyranny.

Dr. Robotnik was killed by the "Ultimate Annihilator", a device he built that could warp reality and erase matter from existence when it was reprogrammed by his traitorous subordinate, Snively, to only target Robotnik's DNA signature.

Destructix

The Destructix are a super group of criminals that formed together after escaping the Devil's Gulag prison, that had served Dr. Robotnik or Mammoth Mogul in the past. The group has six core members. Two are Drago Wolf and Slueth "Doggy" Dawg, who are former Freedom Fighter who defected to Robotnik to act as double agents. The other four are referred to as Mammoth Mogul's "Fearsome Foursome", Lightning Lynx, Sergeant Simian, Flying Frog, and Predator Hawk. Sergeant Simian has super strength, in addition to a vast arsenal of weaponry. Predator Hawk is able to fly, while Flying Frog actually glides. Lightning Lynx has super speed, hearing, and reflexes.

Other characters have temporarily teamed up with them as well. They are initially joined by Kodos, Uma Arachnis, Snively, and Nack the Weasel in an effort to seize power, but eventually part ways. Others include Robotnik, Ixis Naugus, Mogul, and Finitevus, Scourge and Fiona Fox. Eventually, Drago Wolf left the group to become a member of the Dark Egg Legion, and Sleuth Dawg turned leadership of the group over to Fiona, who subsequently turned it over to Scourge.

Enerjak

Enerjak is the name of a superform and semi-independent villainous Persona that can be attained by members of the Echidna species. To become Enerjak, an Echidna must either absorb the power of the Chaos or Master Emeralds, or otherwise be imbued with great amounts of Chaos Energy artificially. There have been many different Enerjaks over time. Enerjak is very powerful, possibly one of the most powerful beings in existence on Mobius. It displays abilities such as teleportation, telepathy, mind control, levitation, control over matter and energy at a molecular level, electromagnetic pulse generation, the ability to distort time and reality, super strength, and the power to control people. Its appearance includes a ceremonial outfit created for ancient Echidna generals, consisting of a golden faceplate, golden breastplate, and various bands of gold around the elbows, wrists, fingers, knees, and ankles, complete with a silver headband.

Dimitri, Knuckles' distant great-uncle, was the first known Enerjak in the comics. However, it was later revealed that Enerjak had existed for thousands of years, the original being a scientist who gained great power from the Chaos Force only to have his essence scattered across it, leading to his future possession of various Echidnas. This included a second Enerjak about whom little is known, Dimitri, and later Knuckles. Two versions of Enerjak-one a malevolent tyrant, the other a benevolent being-were created from a version of Knuckles and his possible daughter in an alternate future version of Mobius.

E.V.E.

E.V.E. (the Exceptionally Versatile Evolvanoid) is an artificial intelligence created by Dr. Robotnik for the sole purpose of killing Sonic. She is composed of nanomachines designed morph and adapt after each defeat, a DNA sample taken from Sonic himself, and organic material from Robotnik's own brain, which is meant to give E.V.E. Robotnik's genius in combination with Sonic's ingenuity. She attempts to kill Sonic several times in several different forms, and she eventually turns on Robotnik due to gaining independence from Sonic's DNA. She attempts to kill Robotnik, though she simply ends up sending him to an alternate future, and she is convinced by Sonic to act upon free will rather than her programming.

She leaves into space and makes it her mission to "liberate" computer systems from other planets by turning the planets into lifeless rocks and absorbing the systems into herself. Sonic encounters E.V.E. again after he is stranded in deep space while trying to get back to Mobius. He convinces her that her actions are wrong, which makes her decide to help Sonic get home and terminate herself by traveling into a star.

Fiona Fox

Fiona Fox is a former Freedom Fighter turned rouge, she dated both Sonic the Hedgehog and Scourge the Hedgehog, at the same time. Fiona was the object of Tails crush. She orchestrated breaking Scourge out of Zone Prison by misleading Dr. Finitevus.

Iron King and Queen

The Iron King and Queen (Jun Kun and Regina Ferrum, respectively) are the primary antagonists of Monkey Khan. The Iron King is a gigantic ox with incredible strength, and an affinity for collecting weapons. The Iron Queen is an Overlander and is capable of casting dark magic and powerful spells. When their schemes extend beyond their region, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters have had to step in and fight them. They briefly took over the Freedom Fighters' home city, only to be defeated and separated. After a brief period of imprisonment, the Iron Queen rejoined the Eggman Empire after being rescued by Snively, her love interest. The Iron King remained absent for some time afterwards.

Mammoth Mogul

Mammoth Mogul is, as his name implies, a Wooly Mammoth who survived into Sonic's era thanks to a Chaos Emerald that became imbedded in his chest. After a brief reign that ended when his subjects overthrew him, he learned how to master the energies of his emerald, forming an evil group known as the Order of Ixis-from which fellow villain Ixis Naugus emerged-that attempted to take over the world. Being defeated by a group of Echidnas, Mogul spent a considerable period plotting another takeover. Forming an evil team known as the Fearsome Foursome-which later expanded into the Destructix-he engaged Sonic and his allies on numerous occasions, demonstrating the ability to achieve the form of Master Mogul, similar to Sonic's own form of Super Sonic. Following a series of defeats, Mogul took up ownership of a casino and determined to use his Chaos Emerald granted immortality to wait Sonic and the heroes out.

Nic the Weasel

Nack has a younger sister named Nic the Weasel, who is determined to prove herself a better bounty hunter than him. The two seldom work together, though on certain occasions they team up. Like Nack, she is also an expert sharpshooter. Nic dresses in similar style to her brother, with a cowboy hat, boots, and gloves. The only differences shown in the comics thus far is the addition of a sleeveless belly shirt, as well as her ponytail. An updated design, however, featured her in a white colored outfit.She no longer appears in the comics due to legal issues.

Pseudo Sonic

Pseudo Sonic is a robot built by Dr. Robotnik based on Sonic the Hedgehog. His mission was to find the location of the Freedom Fighters secret base while Sonic was unable to fight due to illness. Instead, Tails fights and defeats him. He reappeared on the island of Misfit Badniks, where he fought and was defeated by Sonic once again.

Renfield Rodent

Renfield T. Rodent is in charge of several criminal organizations and shady dealings, most often occurring in his personal amusement park known as "Happy Land", located on Angel Island. He initially works with Robotnik to capture the Freedom Fighters, but he is captured after Robotnik abandons him. He later uses a highly addictive and poisonous sauce in the park's chili dogs, which leads to the death of a close friend of Charmy Bee. Downtown Ebony Hare is arrested in the place of Renfield, who later goes on to run an Auto-Automaton factory for Robotnik in a casino. He is arrested afterward and goes to stand trial in Station Square.

The Xorda

The Xorda are a warlike alien species responsible for the metamorphosis of Earth into Mobius. They resemble large, purple, brain-like organs with long pink tentacles and a single green eye. The Xorda's wrath was incurred upon Earth when an envoy they sent to it was captured, imprisoned, and dissected by human scientists. Outraged, the Xorda bombarded the planet with gene bombs, believing that all life had been wiped out. Unbeknownst to them, some survived, and eventually swelled to repopulate the planet, and many animal species mutated into the anthropomorphic Mobians. The Xorda eventually return to the planet after learning that it is populated, and attempt to destroy it. They leave after deploying their greatest weapon, which has the ability to destroy an entire solar system, but it is eventually destroyed. They learn of the planet's survival, but they are unable to return because of a war with the Black Arms.

Scourge the Hedgehog

Originally an evil counterpart of Sonic from another dimension known simply as "Evil Sonic", Scourge eventually developed into a more distinctive villain. After undergoing a drastic appearance change in which he gained green fur and blue eyes - the reverse of Sonic's usual blue fur and green eyes - he became a recurring threat to Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, and their various allies. Initially content simply to cause trouble and mess with Sonic, Scourge developed an obsession with distinguishing himself from his heroic counterpart. To that end, he reformed his Anti-Freedom Fighters into the Suppression Squad, conquered his home world and enacted various changes as a tyrannical king, and subsequently became leader of the Destructix. Something of a womanizer, he sought to exploit the affections of various women before officially becoming the boyfriend of Freedom Fighter-turned criminal, Fiona Fox. Despite the Penders lawsuit Scourge made some cameos in the post genesis arc possibly due to the fact that Scourge is an evil version of Sonic and can not be banned.

Suppression Squad

The Anti-Freedom Fighters are an evil version of the Knothole Freedom Fighters from another dimension. They look largely like their counterparts, with mimor differences in coloring, or "darker" accessories like black leather jackets or sunglasses. They tend to visit the comic main dimension to pose as their protagonist counterparts and cause trouble. Members of this group have included Anti-Sonic, (Scourge the Hedgehog), Anti-Tails (Miles Prower), Anti-Sally (Princess Alicia Acorn), Anti-Antoine (Patch D'Coolette), Anti-Rotor (Boomer Walrus), Anti-Bunnie (Buns Rabbot), Anti-Amy (Rosy the Rascal), and Fiona Fox. Evil St. John (Jeffrey St. Croix), was also a member of the group for a time, before ending up in an interdimensional prison with Evil King Max (King Maxx), Alicia's father whom she and Scourge had overthrown previously. Their efforts usually center on tormenting other inhabitants of their zone, including Dr. Kintobor-Dr. Robotnik's heroic counterpart-and O'Nux-Knuckles' pacifistic counterpart. However, Buns would eventually be kicked out of the group due to a medical condition, and become Kintobor's defender in the Omega Care Unit, a suit resembling E-123 Omega.

Supporting Characters

Ancient Walkers

The Ancient Walkers were three powerful entities who often appear during times of crisis on Mobius. Appearing in multiple forms, most often as a trio of tiki masks, the three appear to offer advice and task their successors with the defense of Mobius. They most often communicate their wishes through their emissary, Knuckles' great-grandfather, Athair. They eventually begin to deteriorate after Mammoth Mogul escapes from the Master Emerald, leading them to be destroyed by the Arachne. Before their destruction, they chose Aurora, Athair, and Merlin Prower as their successors.

Ash Mongoose

Ash was a moody yellow Mongoose who acted as band manager for the Knothole Knuts and later the Forget Me Knots. He was also the boyfriend of lead singer, Mina Mongoose.

Athair

Athair is the great-grandfather of Knuckles the Echidna. As being part of that bloodline, he was intended to be a Guardian of the Floating Island as well, but left the position at the urging of the Ancient Walkers. His mother resumed the post, and when Athair refused to return home when she became gravely ill, his son Sabre went in his place and continued the Guardian line. He takes up residence in the Great Crater, once resting place of the Floating Island, and becomes known among denizens of the continent as a recluse. He occasionally assists the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix, eventually becoming one of Mobius' "Neo Walkers," a trio consisting of himself, Merlin Prower, and the ancient Echidna Aruroa.

Athair is a light-hearted individual, having long been freed from the responsibilities that have darkened the dispositions of so many of his family. However, he does have the horrors of his own past, such as his wife being turned into a robot, weighing on his mind. Sarcastic and prone to humor, Athair is given to talking in riddles, which confuse and frustrate other characters.

Uniquely among characters created for the comic, Athair has appeared in another form of Sonic media: he was featured in several episodes of Sonic Underground. In the series, Athair appeared as an Echidna mystic, and urged Knuckles and the Sonic Underground band to form an alliance with their nemesis, Dr. Robotnik, in order to save Mobius.

Aurora

A being believed by many on Mobius to be a goddess, Aurora was originally a female Echidna named Aurora-La who was married to the first Enerjak. Both gained power in the Chaos Force thanks to the Ancient Walkers, but Enerjak became evil and had to be stopped. Aurora has since watched over Mobius under the direction of the walkers, eventually being joined by Athair and Merlin Prower as the three Neo Walkers.

The Bem

The Bem are an entirely female and identical race devoted to science. They travel the galaxy, and on several occasions, their journeys have brought them to Mobius. Ceneca 9009 develops a way to restore robiticized Mobians, though it was originally intended to help the metallic Biotexans. She later learns that their condition is actually a natural defense to protect against lethal microbes, which causes them to go extinct. This causes the device to be outlawed, but she still helps the Mobians despite being sentenced to death. She is saved by Sonic before she can be executed.

Brotherhood of Guardians

The Brotherhood of Guardians is a group of Echidnas who protect Mobius from a secret facility known as Haven. The Brotherhood's existence is secret to all but a few individuals, including their arch-enemies, the Dark Legion. Edmund is known as the first to take the title of Guardian after Dimitri becomes Enerjak. He dies while fighting the Dark Legion, and his son, Steppenwolf, takes his place and forms the Brotherhood. It is named by his great-grandson, Rembrandt. They were initially open with their operations, but after the death of Rembrandt's son Aaron, they created a code of conduct that involves hiding from the people of Mobius and the active Guardian. They stay silent for four hundred year, but they become more active once Knuckles becomes the active Guardian. The current leader, Sabre, is the son of Athair, but all living members of the organization were subsequently imprisoned in the Twilight Zone that had once been the prison of the Legion.

The Brotherhood is the most extensively explored family chain in the comics, with several generations being known, including: Edmund, Steppenwolf, Harlan, Rembrandt, the brothers Aaron and Jordan, Mathias, Hawking, Tobor (who was impersonated by the evil Dark Legion leader Moritori Rex), Spectre, Sojourner, Thunderhawk, Janelle-Li (the first female Guardian), Athair (who resigned the position), Sabre, Locke, and Knuckles.

All of the Guardians have the ability to control Chaos Energy due to training that stems from Edmund learning from fire ants. The level of their abilities are based upon their emotions, and it grants them teleportation, telekinesis, and the ability to fire the energy.

Geoffrey St. John

As a child, St. John gained his sense of duty from his father, Ian St. John, and was groomed by him to one day take his place as head of the Royal Secret Service. When Ian was killed during the Great War by the Overlanders, Geoffrey developed a strong dislike for the human species. Geoffrey is furiously loyal to the Kingdom of Acorn, especially King Maximillian and Princess Sally (with whom he once had a relationship), but was arrogant, rude and prideful. He first came to the Knothole Freedom Fighters claiming to be an acting head of the Royal Underground, the "legitimate" underground movement acting against Dr. Robotnik, dismissing the rebels as foolish children.

Geoffrey and his men fought alongside the Freedom Fighters on many occasions, and St. John aided in the return of King Acorn and eventually re-established the King's Secret Service and, became head of security during the reclaiming of Mobotropolis. However, there is always tension and jealousy between him and Sonic, partially out of competition of their abilities as fighters, and partially over their shared romantic feelings towards Princess Sally. The latter lessens, though, when he eventually marries Hershey the Cat.

Later issues revealed Geoffrey has been the apprentice and sleeper agent of Ixis Naugus who he had made king using his devious ways.

Hope Kintobor

Hope was a young girl who worked as a mechanic at G.U.N. and helped out Team Dark. She formed a good friendship with Shadow, because she reminded him of Maria.

Nate Morgan

Nate Morgan is an elderly Overlander exile, who caused a large explosion while researching a renewable energy, though it is mainly the fault of Dr. Robotnik, who was known as Nate's assistant, Julian Kintobor. Nate, surprisingly well received, becomes the Minister of Science and a member of the royal court in the House of Acorn soon after. He develops a way to forge Power Rings from the Chaos Emerald, which leads to the founding of Mobotropolis. Due to an internal power struggle, an all out war soon breaks out between the Mobians and Overlanders, which causes Nate to depart.

He drops the Power Ring-Forge into a lake, so that it will not be found, and he makes his way to the Southern Tundra, where he meets Eddy the Yeti, a mutant whose life he saves by using bionic implants. They become close friends, and construct a castle in the area. Naugus eventually seeks them out in order to gain control of Nate's Power Rings, but he is defeated at the cost of Eddy's life. He returns to Mobotropolis and helps the Freedom Fighters until he is captured and roboticized. He is able to help the Freedom Fighters and many Robians escape Robotropolis' destruction, though he is left behind, and perishes in an explosion.

Locke the Echidna

Locke the Echidna is a Chaos of Knuckles's Father and predecessor as Guardian of Angel Island. Locke foresaw a disaster, and exposed his son to the Chaos Emeralds while he was still an egg, giving him abilities beyond those of any other guardian. After training Knuckles rigorously, he passed the position of Guardian on to Knuckles and joined his forefathers in the Brotherhood of Guardians. He reappears sporadically throughout the series to help Knuckles with his problems. In the recent issues of Sonic the Hedgehog, they are once again at odds. After Knuckles turned into Enerjak, due to Dr. Finitivus' tempting, he breaks the spell placed on the Master Emerald to save his son, but at the cost of his own life.

Dr. Quack

Dr. Horatio Quentin Quack is the royal physician and one of the most proficient medical experts in Mobotropolis. He first appears as assistantce after Sonic, Gefforey, and Sally rescue King Acorn from the Zone of Silence. However, he plays a more bigger role in the Endgame Saga, where he is blackmailed by Snively, who captures his wife and children, into lying to the public, that Sally had died, and the King Acorn at the time was a fake.

He serves as the head doctor of the "Tommy Turtle Memorial Hospital".

Tommy Turtle

Tommy Turtle was a close friend of Sonic and Sally, though Sonic initially bullies him. Tommy is thought to have been killed during Robotnik's coup d'etat, though he is later found in the Forbidden Zone. During a struggle with Robotnik, he is taken captive by Robo-Dyne Systems, and they create an infiltrator robot to get close to Sonic. After being saved, he gains bionic abilities, though they eventually allow him to be taken over by A.D.A.M. He gives his life to stop A.D.A.M., and his ashes are placed in Knothole Graveyard.

Uma Arachnis

Uma Arachnis is a female ninja spider who serves Ixis Naugus in the Zone of Silence. She is imbued with the ability to transform into a crystalline version of herself to increase her abilities in battle, but she is left petrified after Naugus is defeated. She is sent to Devil's Gulag, where she later escapes and dies from exposure to Robotropolis pollution. Uma's legacy lives on in the form of her children, the Arachne, an army of spider ninjas who also serve Ixis Naugus. As ninjas, Uma Arachnis and her children wield a number of traditional Japanese weapons. Among their arsenals are Sai, Nunchuks, Katana swords, Bō staffs, Shurikens, and bows and arrows.

Substitute Freedom Fighters

The Substitute Freedom Fighters, are a group that fills in for the Knothole Freedom Fighters when they are unavailable to fight. The group is led by Larry Lynx, who is good intentioned but ultimately has bad luck. Other members include Penelope Platypus, who was originally a sub from the Downunda group; Cyril, a bald eagle and the eldest member of the Substitute Freedom Fighters; Dylan a porcupine who's claim to fame was being the only one who could defeat an anmesiac Sonic; Hamlin, a pig who holds resentment towards Sonic and Sally's popularity while he's relegated as a "substitute", and Arlo, a shy Armadillo.

The group saw little action as a team, and eventually broke up. Dylan, Penelope, and Hamlin were all later chosen by the citizens of New Mobotropolis to sit on the Council of Acorn with Sir Charles Hedgehog, Elias Acorn, Rotor Walrus, and Rosemary Prower. Larry then joined a secret team of freedom fighters, while the aged Cyril and an injured Arlo were forced to retire from active duty. Arlo is believed to have romantic feelings for Penelope, and is apparently a "western Armadillo" as distinguished from eastern Armadillos like Mighty of the Chaotix.
