WINR[edit]

"Worldwide Investigation Network Response", or shortened as W.I.N.R. (ウィナー, Uinā) is an organization established under the direction of United Nations to investigate suspicious events and phenomena that can not be solved by any typical investigation agency. There are branches in various parts of the world, as they conduct activities beyond the interests of nations. Although initially an investigation team, W.I.N.R. was reorganized into a fighting force as a result of various monster sightings in the recent years.[1] The base of the W.I.N.R. American branch is built on the outskirts of Los Angeles in the southwestern United States. It is a huge battle fortress with modern anti-seismic and fireproof design, and is protected by equipment such as missiles and laser guns.[1]

Members

Regular personnel wears W.I.N.R. Suits (W.I.N.R.スーツ, Uinā Sūtsu), W.I.N.R. Helmet (W.I.N.R.ヘルメット, Uinā Herumetto) and a wrist communicator. They are also armed with W.I.N.R. Shot (W.I.N.R.ショット, Uinā Shotto) handguns for combat and wear protective suits when entering specified areas. Members of W.I.N.R. are identified by their numbers below:

  1. Russel Edlund (ラッセル・エドランド, Rasseru Edorando): The captain of W.I.N.R.'s USA branch, who also went into the missions alongside his team members. He is portrayed by Harrison Page and voiced by Kenji Utsumi (内海 賢二, Utsumi Kenji).[1][2]
  2. Theresa Beck (テレサ・ベック, Teresa Bekku): The brains of W.I.N.R. and their data analyst. She is the first to discover Kai's relationship to Ultraman. She is portrayed by Sandra Guibord and voiced by Keiko Toda (戸田 恵子, Toda Keiko).[1][2]
  3. Julie Young (ジュリー・ヤング, Jurī Yangu): The ace pilot of the team, who is also an expert in handling W.I.N.R. aircraft. She is portrayed by Robyn Bliley and voiced by Aya Hisakawa (久川 綾, Hisakawa Aya).[1][2]
  4. Rick Sanders (リック・サンダース, Rikku Sandāsu): A marksman of the team who likes cracking jokes but is otherwise a kindhearted person. In the battle against a giant Baltan, he utilizes a FIM-92 Stinger missile launcher but fails to kill the alien. He is portrayed by Rob Roy Fitzgerald and voiced by Masashi Ebara (江原 正士, Ebara Masashi).[1][2]
  5. Kenichi Kai (ケンイチ・カイ, Ken'ichi Kai): The show's major protagonist, who bonded with Ultraman Powered after the latter's pursuit of Alien Baltan to Earth. To transform, Kenichi uses the Flash Prism (フラッシュプリズム, Furasshu Prizumu) that is provided by Powered.[3][lower-alpha 1] In contrast to W.I.N.R. members, Kenichi's helmet is equipped with a wireless camera linked to the base for surveillance purposes. He is portrayed by Kane Kosugi and voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa (森川 智之, Morikawa Toshiyuki).[1][2] [lower-alpha 2]
Vehicles
  • Fighter-bomber aircraft Strike VTOL (戦闘攻撃機 ストライクビートル, Sentō Kōgeki-ki Sutoraiku Bītoru): A vertical take-off and landing two-seater aircraft with multipurpose missiles and lasers.[1]
  • Giant attack transport mother ship Sky Hunter (大型輸送攻撃母艦 スカイハンター, Ōgata Yusō Kōgeki Bokan Sukai Hantā): A giant aircraft carrier with the length of 313 meters. It can act as a mobile base at the incident site and carry giant monsters with two rocket engines. Apart from that, it can also house two Strike VTOL units.[1]
  • Rover (ローバー, Rōbā): A 4WD Hummer H1 used for patrolling purposes and ground combat.[5][6]
  • Barracuda: Named midget submarine S-22 (特殊潜航艇S-22号, Tokushu Senkō-tei Esu Nijū-ni gō) in the Japanese dub, it was an exploration submarine used by Rick and Theresa during their investigation on Pestar and later on rescued their captain Edlund when his Strike VTOL sank underwater.[7]

Ultraman Powered[edit]

Ultraman Powered (ウルトラマンパワード, Urutoraman Pawādo) is the titular hero, who is simply called as the "Ultraman" in-series. Hailing from Nebula M78 of the Land of Light, Powered chased the Alien Baltans to Earth after their atrocities in destroying countless worlds. Since his body condition cannot adapt to Earth surroundings, he is forced to bond with Kenichi Kai, allowing Powered to fight under 3 minutes.[8] Ever since then, the Ultra has helped W.I.N.R. in fighting against monster threats until his battle with Dorako, which severely injuring Kai.[9] Driven guilt from not being able to save his host, Powered separated with Kai and fought the Alien Baltan's Zetton with the remainder of his energies.[9] A severely weakened Powered was rescued at the last minute by two other Ultras as they return home.[10]

In contrast to previous Ultras, his eyes (the Powered Eyes (パワード・アイ, Pawādo Ai)) are colored blue and turn red when under stressful conditions.[11] Underneath his forearms are a pair of Powered Stabilizers (パワード・スタビライザー, Pawādo Sutabiraizā)[11] and his Color Timer is surrounded by an outer ring with smaller lights that also blinked when entering the time limit. His finishing moves are Mega Spacium Ray (メガ・スペシウム光線, Mega Supeshiumu Kōsen) and Powered Slash (パワードスラッシュ, Pawādo Surasshu).

Although unidentified in the original release, Powered's voice actors in the Japanese dub are Sho Kosugi (ep. 1) and Akio Ōtsuka (大塚 明夫, Ōtsuka Akio, ep. 13).[1] Sho Kosugi is in fact the real life father of Kane Kosugi, Kenichi Kai's actor, while Akio also voiced a helicopter pilot in episode 12. At the time of the planning stage, among of his tentative names were "Earth" and "Sword".[12]

Powered is designed after the original Ultraman,[13] with added elements of a "living alien".[14] A total of 13 suits were produced, while three types of masks were made; first being the blue eyed, the second being red eyed and the third is for lighting purposes.[15] Additionally, his eyes were meant to be colored white per the original Ultraman, but this changed after the production was relocated to overseas.[6] Masahiro Maeda first designed him with translucent body parts but was rejected due to not being able to understand the Ultraman's characteristics. After that, Katsushi Murakami from Bandai presented his own design, based on a car model. Although his draft was not accepted, it becomes the prototype of the final product while retaining said draft's Color Timer.[13]

Monsters and aliens[edit]

Keeping with the show's theme being a reboot of Ultraman, the monsters below follow the same principle. They were designed in Japan before suits were manufactured in America.[16][17] When the series is commercialized in Japan, they were given the Powered (パワード, Pawādo) prefix as a distinction from their original generation.[lower-alpha 3] Even before Powered's arrival to Earth, it is said that W.I.N.R. had dealt with at least 18 monster attacks.

  • Space Ninja Alien Baltan (宇宙忍者 バルタン星人, Uchū Ninja Barutan Seijin, 1, 13): A group of malicious aliens from Planet Baltan (バルタン星, Barutan Sei) who traveled within a giant space ship.[18] Having destroyed multiple planets, they were chased by Powered to Earth, where three agents went down to an abandoned warehouse. After killing a pair of patrolling police officers, they were chased by Captain Edlund and Rick as they combined into a giant Baltan. After being able to resist Rick's bazooka shot, the Baltan was faced with Powered and was killed by his Mega Spacium Ray. His death caused all of their remaining members in the space ship to retreat. Their abilities include flying at the speed of Mach 27, casting illusions, acceleration through chronokinesis, firing anti-gravity waves and shooting Bio Beam (バイオビーム, Baio Bīmu).[19] [lower-alpha 4]
    • Space Ninja Psycho Alien Baltan (宇宙忍者 サイコバルタン星人, Uchū Ninja Saiko Barutan Seijin, 13): The leader of the Alien Baltan, he sported a large brain which sprouted from his head and can shoot Psycho Wave (サイコウェーブ, Saiko Uēbu).[22][23] Following the giant Baltan's defeat, Psycho commanded his kind to escape Earth but in reality, he gathered the information of Powered's battles and send Dorako to do the work, feeding their Zetton with the Ultra's combat capability. The Psycho Baltan and his kind on board of the ship was killed by the combined firepower from W.I.N.R.'s Sky Hunter and two other Ultra Warriors. [lower-alpha 5][20]

W.I.N.R. was issued the order to eliminate Kemura by luring the monster with a bag of meat. When the cable from the Sky Hunter was detached, Kai took over by attaching the meat to his Rover but was knocked out in the process. Kai becomes Powered to stop the monster from preying on nearby campers while exposing its vulnerable part for the Strike VTOL to attack. Despite its weakness for sunlight, this is compensated through a light shielding eyelid on its eyes. [lower-alpha 10][20]
  • The Sun People (太陽の民, Taiyō no min, 4): A race of underground humans who revered Ultraman Powered as their savior from the past. In the present day, they try to reclaim the surface after Powered returned by unleashing Telesdon. Powered appears and held the monster for it to expose its unprotected head, allowing the Ultra to fire Mega Spacium Ray and destroy it. Because of its nature, Gavora's entire outer skin is made from uranium and a direct hit can cause radiation exposure to surrounding area. Its head (the weak point) is protected by a six-petal shell which opens when under outrage. [lower-alpha 11] [28][29][27]

When Jamra returned to Earth, he slowly loses control of the creature which caused him to occasionally transform when his daughter was kidnapped by a trio of government agents. At night, when the agents prepare to threaten her daughter, Jamra transforms and kill them when they try to escape. The Neuronet try to capture him with their digital field but he escaped and created the Dada Field (ダダ・フィールド, Dada Fīrudo) that surrounded the building. To make things worse, he transformed two other executives into his duplicates as they attack W.I.N.R. members and combine into giant to face Powered. Powered lured Dada to a nearby generator and destroy the main computer with Mega Spacium Ray, seemingly killing the Dada as well. While the dismantling of Neuronet's frame was announced, the Dada was revealed to have survived his death and return to a personal computer. In Japanese dub, Dada is voiced by Arno Tahara (田原 アルノ, Tahara Aruno) and designed by Masahiro with enlarged heads and lack of shoulders to emphasize eeriness.[20]

However, the monster was killed for real when Powered fired his Mega Spacium Ray after being stunned by the sound frequency from W.I.N.R.'s Sky Hunter. [lower-alpha 15][20]
    • Aboras: The blue-colored monster with the ability to spit a stream of corrosive liquid.. A pair of university students discover it's capsule within a cave at the Clearwater Canyon and accidentally released Aboras through a discarded flash unit's noises. Notes[edit]

  1. In the original English cut, it is named as Beta Capsule, after the transformation item of Shin Hayata.
  2. According to an interview, Kane was never aware of the Ultraman and the Ultra Series as a whole since tokusatsu and anime wasn't popular enough back on his days as a student. He learns about it during his stay in Japan and becomes delighted to play the role of the children's hero. Having enjoyed his role, Kane even agreed to return to the Ultra Series if he was offered the chance to do so.[4]
  3. Some of the "Powered" variants of monsters were mentioned in Ultraman Ginga Theater Special: Ultra Monster Hero Battle Royal! and were given the Powered Edition (パワード版, Pawādo Han) suffix.
  4. Masahiro Maeda designs the Baltans after their second generation incarnation from episode 16 of Ultraman.[20] He also includes the appearance of crystallized skeleton and an insect.[21]
  5. The Psycho Baltan was made by modifying the original Alien Baltan suit from said series.
  6. The series' Kemura is designed by Masahiro Maeda after a swallowtail butterfly and its larva counterpart, osmeterium.
  7. It was designed by Masahiro Maeda and colored green as a distinction from its original counterpart. It was named Strong Chandlar (ストロングチャンドラー, Sutorongu Chandorā) in its draft period and was meant to be the original Chandlar's subspecies.[20] The Powered Chandlar was themed after the ancestral birds.[26]
  8. Masahiro Maeda redesigned Pigmon opting its initial "cute" appearance for themes of marine life forms. Its face is devil stinger fish, the back is sea coral, its stomach is crustacean shell and both legs and arms are derived from shrimps.
  9. Masahiro Maeda differentiate the Red Kings from their original incarnation by giving them scaly skin texture on their torso. The male Red King's red color was said to be a result of the mating season.
  10. According to Masahiro Maeda, its grayish color scheme is meant to invoke the image of a digging machine.
  11. Masahiro Maeda redesigned the seam lines on Gavora's torso to invoke it's "unnatural" appearance as a living being.
  12. Masahiro draws inspiration of Jamila from H. R. Giger's drawings and had its face covered with its eyes being the most visible part to express the monster's sadness. Unfortunately, this design earned the ire of Akio Jissoji, one of the writers of the original Ultraman.
  13. Masahiro designs Zambolar by opting any signs of organic and interprets it as "being born from Earth".
  14. Alternative title is Computer Life Form Dada (コンピューター生命体 ダダ, Konpyūtā Seimei-tai Dada).
  15. Due to Masahiro's low opinion on the monster, Banilla receive less redesign from its original counterpart.
  16. Masahiro redesigned Aboras with themes of Tyranosaurus, Ostracoderm and Titanichthys.
  17. Gomora was given a simple design with its head themed after the skeleton of a bull.
  18. It was designed in the same image of an Ultraman, with additional themes of insect and mechanical images.
