This is a list of console video game franchises organized by the generations in which they first appeared.

Franchises listed as "Internationalizations" are those that were introduced to foreign markets after being marketed exclusively in their country of origin (usually Japan) for one or more generations.

Legend
Arc The franchise debuted on arcade machines.
JP All games in the series have only been released in Japan.
PC The franchise debuted on personal computers.

Third generation (8-bit era)[edit]

1Dragon Quest was known as Dragon Warrior in North America due to a trademark conflict. It wasn't until the sixth generation, and the release of Dragon Quest VIII that Square-Enix (formerly Enix) was able to release games in the series with their original names.

2 Nintendo Wars debuted on the Famicom in Japan as Famicom Wars during the third generation era. It was introduced to international markets on the Game Boy Advance during the sixth generation era, where it was marketed as Advance Wars. Interestingly, Advance Wars was not released in Japan until the Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2 compilation, due to the September 11, 2001 attacks.
