Timeline of living governors[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the governor of Texas and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been one time period when there was only one living governor, beginning the inauguration of James Pinckney Henderson in 1846 and ending with the inauguration of George T. Wood in 1847.
There has been one time period when 10 living current or former governors co-existed. This period was from the January 1879 inauguration of Oran Milo Roberts to the May 1880 death of Edward Clark. If one includes future governors as well as past and current governors, there has been only one time period when 23 different governors co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first governor, and the fact that there have been at least two governors living since the inauguration of George T. Wood on December 21, 1847, James Pinckney Henderson is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living governor (February 19, 1846 to December 21, 1847).
- In addition, George T. Wood (from December 21, 1847 to December 21, 1849) is the only other person to have been one of two or less living governors.
- During one period in the History of Texas have there been 10 living governors. This period was from January 21, 1879 to May 4, 1880 (when Peter Hansborough Bell, James W. Henderson, Elisha M. Pease, Edward Clark, Francis Lubbock, James W. Throckmorton, Edmund J. Davis, Richard Coke, Richard B. Hubbard, and Oran Milo Roberts were alive.
- Peter Hansborough Bell was the only person to be both one of three or less living governors (from December 21, 1849 to November 23, 1853) and one of the 10 living governors (from January 21, 1879 to May 4, 1880).
- There have been 16 administrations during which a governor has not died, the most recent being the administration of George W. Bush.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Charles Allen Culberson has there been as many as five deaths during an administration. Only once (during the administration of Rick Perry) has there been as many as four deaths during an administration.
- George W. Bush holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of a governor during his term (5 years and 339 days).
- The longest period between deaths of governors was the 14 years and 246 days between the deaths of S. W. T. Lanham on July 29, 1908 and Thomas Mitchell Campbell on April 1, 1923. The shortest period was the 64 days between the deaths of Lawrence Sullivan Ross on January 3, 1898 and Frederick Low on March 8, 1898.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no governor must die before April 8, 2032 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving governors, George W. Bush and Rick Perry, would then be 86 and 82 years old respectively).
- The second longest period was the 10 years and 125 days between the deaths of John Connally on June 15, 1993 and Preston Smith on October 18, 2003.
- Only five times (in 1858, 1880, 1883, 1898 and 1949) have multiple governors died in the same year.
- Following his administration's end in 1853, Peter Hansborough Bell lived to see a record 18 administrations prior to his death in March 1898. Francis Lubbock follows with 14 administrations after his own administration ended in 1863, prior to his death in June 1905. In modern times, the governor to have lived to see the most administrations following their own was William P. Hobby, with 12 following the end of his administration in 1921, prior to his death in 1964.
- If one includes future as well as past and current governors, the record of living governors sits at 23:
- Between Thomas Mitchell Campbell's birth on April 22, 1856 and James Pinckney Henderson's death on June 4, 1858, the following governors were alive: James Pinckney Henderson, George T. Wood, Peter Hansborough Bell, James W. Henderson, Elisha M. Pease, Hardin R. Runnels, Sam Houston, Edward Clark, Francis Lubbock, Pendleton Murrah, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, James W. Throckmorton, Edmund J. Davis, Richard Coke, Richard B. Hubbard, Oran Milo Roberts, John Ireland, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, Jim Hogg, Charles Allen Culberson, Joseph D. Sayers, S. W. T. Lanham, and Thomas Mitchell Campbell.
- Since the inauguration of Peter Hansborough Bell on December 21, 1849 (a period of 175 years, 33 days), there have been at least three governors living. And since the death of James Allred on September 24, 1959 (a period of 65 years, 121 days), there have been no more than seven governors living.
Oldest living governors of Texas[edit]
Not all governors live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 42 deceased governors, 18 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 24 did not. Peter Hansborough Bell became the oldest living governor when Sam Houston died in 1863 and remained so until his death in 1898, for a record single period of 34 years and 225 days. Oran Milo Roberts became the oldest living governor after the death of Peter Hansborough Bell, but he survived Bell by only 72 days.
On one occasion the oldest living governor lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the inauguration of a governor who was older. Peter Hansborough Bell lost this distinction when Sam Houston was inaugurated, but when Houston died in 1863, Bell regained it again until his own death in 1898 for a total record period of 35 years and 333 days.
Bill Clements was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 86 years, and 188 days. Dolph Briscoe, who was 87 years, and 65 days old when he died on June 27, 2010 was the oldest and most recent governor to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
