Timeline of living premiers[edit]
This is a chronological list of all who served as the Premier of Queensland and were still living, at different periods in history. There has been only one time period when there was only one living premier, beginning with the appointment of Robert Herbert in December 1859 and ending with the appointment of Arthur Macalister in February 1866.
There has been one time period when 10 living current or former premiers co-existed. This period was from the appointment of Robert Philp on 17 December 1899 to the death of Thomas McIlwraith on 17 July 1900.
If one includes future premiers as well as past and current premiers, there has been only one time period when 25 different premiers co-existed. (see Statistics)

Statistics[edit]
- Because he was the first premier, and the fact that there have been at least two premiers living since the appointment of Arthur Macalister on 1 February 1866, Robert Herbert is the only person to ever hold the distinction of being the only living premier (from 10 December 1859 to 1 February 1866).
- In addition, Arthur Macalister (from 1 February 1866 to 15 August 1867), Digby Denham, Ted Theodore (from 11 July 1922 to 26 February 1925), Arthur Edward Moore (from 25 September 1953 to 12 August 1957), Vince Gair (from 25 September 1953 to 12 August 1957, 7 January 1963 to 17 January 1968, and 21 July to 1 August 1968), and Frank Nicklin (from 7 January 1963 to 17 January 1968, and 21 July to 1 August 1968) are the only other persons to have been one of two or less living premiers.
- During one period in the History of Queensland have there been 10 living premiers. This period was from 17 December 1899 to 17 July 1900 (when Robert Herbert, George Thorn, John Douglas, Thomas McIlwraith, Samuel Griffith, Boyd Dunlop Morehead, Hugh Nelson, James Dickson, Anderson Dawson, and Robert Philp were alive).
- Robert Herbert was the only person to be both one of two or less living premiers (from 10 December 1859 to 15 August 1867) and one of the 10 living premiers (from 17 December 1899 to 17 July 1900).
- There have been 20 administrations during which a premier has not died, the most recent being the administration of Steven Miles. This does not include the administrations of Thomas Joseph Byrnes, nor Jack Pizzey (who were themselves the only premiers to die during their administrations) nor the administration of the incumbent David Crisafulli as no premier has died since Mike Ahern who died during the administration of Annastacia Palaszczuk.
- Conversely, only during the administration of Arthur Morgan has there been as many as five deaths during an administration. Only once (during the administration of Ted Theodore) has there been as many as four deaths during an administration (this does not include the administration of Ned Hanlon whose own death was the fourth during his administration).
- William Forgan Smith holds the distinction of serving for the longest period without the death of premier during his term (10 years, 91 days). In recent years, the premier who served the longest without a death in her term was Anna Bligh, who served for 4 years and 195 days.
- The longest period between deaths of premiers was the 16 years and 91 days between the deaths of William Gillies on 9 February 1928 and Digby Denham on 10 May 1944. The shortest period was the 63 days between the deaths of Boyd Dunlop Morehead on 30 October 1905 and Hugh Nelson on 1 January 1906.
- If the longest period between deaths is to be exceeded, no premier must die before 13 October 2039 (the current oldest and second oldest surviving premiers, Russell Cooper and Peter Beattie, would then be 98 and 87 years old respectively).
- The second longest period was the 14 years and 150 days between the deaths of Arthur Macalister on 23 March 1883 and Charles Lilley on 20 August 1897.
- Only twice (in 1898 and 1905) have multiple premiers died in the same year.
- Following his administration's end in 1867, Robert Herbert lived to see a record 19 administrations prior to his death in May 1905. Samuel Griffith follows with 13 administrations after his own administration ended in 1893, prior to his death in August 1920. In modern times, the premier to have lived to see the most administrations following their own was Russell Cooper, with 8 following the end of his administration in 1989.
- If one includes future as well as past and current premiers, the record sits at 25:
- Between Frank Nicklin's birth on 6 August 1895 and Charles Lilley's death on 20 August 1897, the following premiers were alive: Robert Herbert, Charles Lilley, Arthur Hunter Palmer, George Thorn, John Douglas, Thomas McIlwraith, Samuel Griffith, Boyd Dunlop Morehead, Hugh Nelson, Thomas Joseph Byrnes, James Dickson, Anderson Dawson, Robert Philp, Arthur Morgan, William Kidston, Digby Denham, T. J. Ryan, Ted Theodore, William Gillies, William McCormack, Arthur Edward Moore, William Forgan Smith, Frank Arthur Cooper, Ned Hanlon, and Frank Nicklin.
- Since the appointment of Mike Ahern on 1 December 1987 (a period of 36 years, 339 days), there have been at least three premiers living, and since the appointment of Russell Cooper on 25 September 1989 (a period of 35 years, 40 days), there have been at least four premiers living.
Oldest living premiers of Queensland[edit]
Not all premiers live to become the oldest of their time. Of the 33 deceased premiers, 14 eventually became the oldest of their time, while 19 did not (including all 3 premiers who died in office, and 15 others). Joh Bjelke-Petersen became the oldest living premier when Vince Gair died in 1980 and remained so until his death in 2005, for a record 24 years and 163 days. Hugh Nelson became the oldest living premier after the death of Robert Herbert, but he survived Herbert by only 240 days.
On two occasions the oldest living premier lost this distinction not by his death, but due to the appointment of a premier who was older. Robert Herbert lost this distinction when Arthur Macalister was appointed, but when John Douglas died in 1904 Herbert regained it again until his own death in 1905 for a total period of 6 years and 340 days. Arthur Macalister lost this distinction when Robert Mackenzie was appointed, but regained it again when Mackenzie died in 1875, Consequently, Macalister too was the oldest living premier twice: first from 1866 to 1867 (from first appointment), and a second time from Mackenzie's death in 1873 until his own death in 1883 for a total period of 10 years and 15 days.
Vince Gair was the oldest to acquire this distinction at the age of 76 years, and 338 days. Mike Ahern, who was aged 81 years, and 70 days when he died, on 11 August 2023 was the oldest and most recent premier to die without ever acquiring this distinction.
