List of international cricket five-wicket hauls at Asgiriya Stadium
Asgiriya Stadium is a sports ground at Kandy in Sri Lanka. It was the venue for international cricket between 1983 and 2007 and is the home of the Kandy Cricket Club.[1][2] The first Test match on the ground was between Sri Lanka and Australia in April 1983 and the first One Day International (ODI) took place in 1986 with Pakistan as Sri Lanka's oppponents. A total of six men's ODIs and 21 Test matches were staged at the ground, with one other Test being abandoned without a ball being bowled. Four women's ODI matches were played on the ground between 1997 and 2004.[1][2]
In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer") refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[3] This article details the five-wicket hauls taken on the ground in official international Test and One Day International matches.[lower-alpha 1]
The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at Asgiriya Stadium was Australian bowler Bruce Yardley in the grounds first Test in 1983. Yardley took five wickets for the cost of 88 runs (5/88) against Sri Lanka; his team mate Tom Hogan took a second five-wicket haul later in the same match. Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan took a total of nine five-wicket hauls in Test matches on the ground, including the best innings figures of 9/51, taken in 2002 against Zimbabwe. Muralitharan also took ten wickets in a match five times on the ground.
Two bowlers took five-wicket hauls in ODI matches on the ground, both in women's matches. Cheraldine Oudolf of the Netherlands was the first to do so in the ground's first women's ODI in 1997, taking 5/20 against Sri Lanka. Indian bowler Mamatha Maben took the ground's best figures in an ODI in the east women's ODI staged in the ground, taking 6/10 in 2004.
