This is a list of injuries and deaths during train surfing.

Common ways that injuries and deaths from train surfing may occur include being electrocuted from overhead power lines, falling off and falling underneath the wheels of the train.[1]

Australia[edit]

It has been reported that during the period from 2010 to 2014 there were 479 overall incidents of train surfing on railways in Melbourne.[2] A different set of figures tallied the number of people who were caught train surfing as 333 in 2011, and 294 in 2010.[3] Between July 2019 and March 2020 46 arrests were made for train surfing on trains in Sydney.[4]

Bangladesh[edit]

It was reported in 2010 that "...the 'roof riding' practice, which dates back to 1947, has become one of the leading causes of child deaths in the country because it often leads to accidents. "[5]

Brazil - Rio de Janeiro[edit]

It was written in a study published in the Journal "Burns" in August 2000, that "train surfers" are "adolescents from the outskirts of the city of Rio de Janeiro, who are compelled by the overcrowded railway trains to travel on the roofs of the wagons" and that there had been "over 100 fatalities in more than 200 registered accidents over the past 10 years."[6]

Germany[edit]

In Germany between 1989 and 1995 there were 41 train surfing accidents. 18 of these 41 accidents resulted in the person's death.The age range of the people involved in the accidents was from 13 to 25 and in over 50% of the cases alcohol was a factor involved.[7] It was reported that in 2008 40 people died due to train surfing in Germany.[8] A train surfing incident occurred in Frankfurt in 2019 and at the time a news source quoted a person in Frankfurt as saying that "At that time (1990's), the police in Germany often had to deal with... S-Bahn surfers." [9]

Indonesia[edit]

In 2012 it was reported that "According to statistics riding on the roofs of trains killed 11 people in Indonesia last year."[10]

Russia[edit]

It was reported that "In 2011, over 100 train surfers died in Russia."[8] The injury and death counts for incidents on railways in Russia in 2015 include "25 children and teenagers, many of whom suffered accidents while trying to ride outside train cars or to make a selfie".[11]In 2016 30 minors were injured while train surfing and seven of these people were killed.[12] Also in 2016 1,000 people were arrested for train surfing.[13] In the six months to July 2017 there were 21 people who were killed and another 45 people injured whilst train surfing.[14][15]

South Africa[edit]

It has been reported that across the PRASA network in 2013, there was a total of 238 fatalities, of which 17 of these were due to train surfing.[1]

Ukraine - Kiev[edit]

It was reported that "in May 2018, the website of the National Police of Kiev announced that it had "caught" 12 juvenile hookers in the subway."[16]

United States - New York[edit]

It has been reported that "Subway surfing was a form of thrill-seeking in the late 1980s and early '90s when several teenagers lost their lives." [17]

United Kingdom – London Died Collided with object 18 An 18 year-old, was travelling on a train with other people. They were taking turns going in between the carriages to ride on the outside of the train. The 18 year-old collided with a signal box, fell from the train and died in hospital two days later.

United Kingdom – London Died Collided with Bridge 16 A person, 16, climbed onto the roof of a train and as the train approached a bridge their head collided with it and they died soon afterwards in hospital.

31 May 1994 United States – New York Died Hit by object 19 A 19-year-old was riding on top of a train with another person when it entered a tunnel. It is thought that when the train moved from elevated tracks into a tunnel, the 19 year-old hit the entrance to the tunnel and was killed. His body was found just north of the 149th street station.

15 July 1996 United States – New York Died Hit by object ? A person was riding on top of a train carriage when they hit a signal light, were thrown on to the tracks and killed. The death happened close to the Bronx Park East station in Pelham Parkway. A news report estimated their age as between 16 and 20 years old.

Germany Died Hit by object 22 A person, 22, was killed whilst train surfing. They were on top of a train and collided with a signal mast.

5 November 2002 United Kingdom – East Sussex Died Hit by object 18 An 18-year-old was killed after Guy Fawkes night celebrations in East Sussex. They climbed out of the window of the train and up onto the roof. It is thought that he was killed when the train traveled over a bridge and part of the bridge hit the 18-year-old. A friend who was with the 18-year-old at the time alerted the train driver using the emergency cord and the driver stopped the train at the next station.

20 October 2003 United States – New York Died Hit by Object 14 A 14-year-old, and 10 people from their high school got on a train at the 14th Street and Eighth Avenue station. The 14-year-old was riding between two carriages using a safety chain to rock back and forth. He handed his hat, jersey, necklace and book bag to the other people there. The 14-year-old then said that they wanted to lie down on the top of the roof and began to climb up. At the top of the train he wedged his legs in between two carriages, was hit by a trackside beam, thrown onto the tracks by the impact and was then hit by the rear carriages of the train. They were killed as a result of the incident.

14 November 2003 United States – New York Died Hit by Object 22 21 A 22-year-old and a 21-year-old, were with two other people at Bleecker Street station, Greenwich Village, when they boarded a train. The 21- and 22 year-old climbed on top of the roof of the train. As the train drove onto the Whitlock bridge they collided with a beam. The 21-year-old was found between the 9th and 10th cars of the train. The 22-year-old died from his injuries on the day of the collision while the 21-year-old was pronounced dead in hospital 6 days later.

2004 South Africa Injured Electrocuted 15 A 15-year-old, climbed on top of a train carriage and prepared himself for a train surfing manoeuvre called "the matrix". He was then electrocuted by the overhead power lines. The injuries he received include loss of the use of his right hand, loss of his two front teeth and two broken ribs.

2007 South Africa Injured Electrocuted ? In the 2013 mini documentary, "Staff Riding" a person is filmed saying that they were holding onto an electric cab cable, and then after that they woke up down at the station.[32] They had been on top of a train when they touched the overhead cab cable. They had amputations performed on both arms and one leg following the incidence of electrocution.

12 May 2007 Denmark – Midtjylland – Ringkøbing Died Hit by object 22 A 22-year-old had been at a football game in Herning and was travelling with three friends to Ringkobing. The 22-year-old was riding on the top of the train when it travelled through a viaduct near Skraldhedevejhe. The 22-year-old hit the edge of the viaduct. Their body was noticed lying on top of the train, by motorists.

15 October 2007 United States – New York Died Hit by Object 21 A 21-year-old was riding on top of a train carriage in Upper Manhattan. The details as to how the person died are uncertain with two ideas being reported. One idea was that they fell off the train inside a tunnel and were run over by a train. A second idea was that they hit a wall.

18 May 2008 Australia – Melbourne Died Unconfirmed 20 A 20-year-old was killed after riding on the top of a train. They climbed onto the roof of the train at Newport station at around 1:00 am. At 8:30 am their body was found several stations away at Flinders Street station on top of the roof of the train. One news source gave an uncertain suggestion as to the cause of the persons death as being electrocution.

14 February 2011 Russia – Moscow Died Hit by Object 19 19 Two 19-year-olds were killed after riding on the roof of a train on the Moscow Metro. It is thought the two wanted to ride several stations of the Filyovskaya line which has stations located outside. As well as the outdoor stations the line has underground stations. The two climbed on top of the roof of a train and it is thought they were killed when they were hit by the entrance to a tunnel. One of the two 19-year-old's body was found on the roof of a train at Kiyevskaya with a skull fracture. The other 19-year-old's body was found between Kuntsevskaya and Pioneer stations with fractures to the bones in his neck. They were found with clothing to assist them in riding the outside of the train including ski masks and gloves.

5 September 2011 United States – Colorado – Longmont Injured Fall 17 Anna Beninati, 17, was with three friends in Longmont Colorado, planning to hop on board a freight train that would take them back to Colorado State University. They were intending to run alongside the train as it was moving, grab a hold of it and climb on. Beninati has given a description of the incident, "I managed to grab on with my arms ... but my legs didn't make it up onto the train. Instead, they bounced underneath it and dragged against the tracks until they weren't legs anymore. The driver never even knew he had hit me until long afterward. I was conscious the whole time. I got to see my detached limbs lying next to me on the pavement. I clearly remember being lifted onto the stretcher in three distinct pieces...".[45] Beninati lost her left leg from above the knee and her right leg from below the knee.[46][47][45]
24 January 2012 Australia – Melbourne Died Electrocuted 17 A 17-year-old was with five friends at a train a station intending to travel back to their home. At about 11:00 pm, he was on the roof of the train when he came into contact with wires at Caulfield. Ambulance officers who arrived at the station had to wait for electricity to be turned off before being able to provide assistance to the person on the train roof. The 17-year-old died whilst they were still at Caulfield station.

10 March 2012 Australia – Sydney Injured Fall 24 A 24-year-old was injured after climbing on to the back of a train at Central station and falling off. They were on the train for 500m before they fell off. They fell onto the tracks inside a tunnel. A train driver travelling past saw the person on the tracks, pulled them into the driver's cabin and took them to Green Square station where they were attended to by paramedics.

19 May 2012 Australia – Melbourne Injured Fall ? A teenager was riding on top of the rear carriage of a train with two other people. As the train was approaching Balaclava the person fell, collided with the side of the train and then landed on the tack bed. The person received severe head injuries and injuries to their upper body. Whilst unconscious they were transported to a hospital, underwent surgery and remained in a critical condition.

19 May 2012 Germany – Bavaria – Ebersberg Injured Electrocuted from an arc 17 A 17-year-old got onto a train that arrived at Ebersberg station, and at one point climbed onto the roof. After the train moved a few metres an electric arc then formed between the overhead power lines and the person on the roof of the train. The train then stopped moving due to a short circuit. A passenger inside the train then saw the person fall off the side of the train and notified the train driver through an emergency intercom. He was taken by helicopter to a clinic in Munich. He received burns to 75% of his body, was put into an artificial coma and had a condition that was reported as very critical.

24 March 2013 Germany – Berlin Injured Fall 22 A person was hanging onto the windows on the outside of a train at Buch station when he was seen by a train station supervisor. The train was going through the process of preparing to leave the station and the train supervisor stopped the process from continuing. The person refrained from hanging onto the window, began to move away and the train began to leave the station. The person then moved back towards the train, jumped in the direction of the window, and then slipped and fell under the train. The station supervisor began an emergency stop and he was recovered from the track bed, hospitalised after receiving serious injuries and then later his condition was stabilised.

23 May 2013 France – Paris Died Hit by object 20s A person in their 20s was with a friend when they boarded a train at Denfert-Rochereau at 10 pm at night. They had a camera with them and it was thought that they were intending to create a video of train surfing on the Paris Metro. One of them climbed up between two carriages and the train went into a tunnel. His head hit the edge of the tunnel just before the train entered Montparnasse. There were witnesses to the incident sitting in a carriage of the train. One witness said they heard a sound like a thud, saw a body fall between the two carriages, and then moved the injured person to the platform. This witness then began to perform CPR on the person, who had sustained a fractured skull from the incident and later died.

5 November 2013 United States -– New York Injured Hit by object 17 A 17-year-old was riding on top of a train with 3 friends when he hit his head on a metal beam. The train operator saw people riding on top of the train and when the train was stopped at the next station the 17 year-old was found on the roof. His injuries included the loss of one eye and he was taken to hospital where he was in a serious condition.

5 March 2014 Germany – Berlin Died Hit by object 19 Valerian Arsene Verny, 19, was killed after hitting a train tunnel. At Yorckstrasse station the 19-year-old climbed onto the roof of a train with four friends. Between Julius-Leber-Brücke and Schöneberg stations there is a low tunnel that leaves a gap of only 30 centimetres from the roof of the train. Valerian was thrown off the roof as the train entered the tunnel. The other 4 people that had been with him got off the train at Schöneberg station and raised the alarm.

2 April 2014 United States – New York Died Hit by object 45 A 45-year-old was walking between train cars when they climbed up on top of a train. While on top of the train Rios's head hit an object. He was found on top of the train as it arrived at Elder Avenue station where he was pronounced dead.

27 June 2014 Australia – Melbourne Died Electrocuted 26 A 26-year-old was a passenger on a train as it arrived at Balaclava. He took off his clothes and climbed onto the roof of the train. As he was walking on top of the train he fell, landed on the trains electrical system and was killed.

15 January 2015 Germany – Berlin Injured Hit by object 14 Between Storkower Strasse and Frankfurter Allee stations passengers on the train heard a thud. A 14-year-old was found in the middle of the train near Treptower park S-Bahn station at around 10 pm. It is thought the person was an S-Bahn surfer.The person suffered head injuries and had to be operated on following the incident.

18 February 2015 South Africa – Cape Town Died Hit by object 15 A 15-year-old was riding on top of a train. As the train left Philippi train station a bang was heard by people nearby. A 15-year-old's body was discovered on top of a train with his school books next to him. They had suffered a fatal electric shock. A report had indicated that the 15 year old had been a regular train surfer.

25 February 2015 Australia – Melbourne Died Jumped from train 24 A 23-year-old, was killed from head injuries sustained after an incident occurred at McKinnon station. News sources report that it is uncertain as to exactly what happened to the person. It is believed that they jumped from the train as it arrived at McKinnon station and landed head first. It was reported that they had gotten onto the roof of the train at the previous station and had not been willing to come down off the roof.

11 April 2015 Germany – Berlin Died Hit by object 19 A 19-year-old and 18-year-old jumped onto a train from a bridge near the Botanischer Garten S-Bahn station and rode on top of the train roof. News sources report that the 19-year-old hit a signal bridge at full speed before the train arrived at Nikolassee. The 18-year-old held onto him on the roof of the train until they arrived at the next station. He carried the 19-year-old down onto the platform at Nikolassee station where he subsequently died.

1 June 2015 France – Champagne-sur-Oise Died Hit by Train 14 A 14 year-old person and a teenager were at Valmondois train station. They climbed onto the back of a freight train and held onto the train as it departed. As the train approached Champagne-sur-Oise one of the teenagers jumped from the train. The 14 year-old then jumped from the train, slipped, fell underneath the last carriage and was killed.

6 May 2016 United States – New York Died Hit by object 24 A 24 year old was riding on top of a train car when his head hit a metal beam causing him to fall in between two carriages. A person on the Jay Street-MetroTech platform noticed the 24 year old lying unconscious between two train cars. He was later pronounced dead after being taken to Brooklyn Hospital.[83][84]
24 September 2016 Germany – Berlin Died Hit by object 22 A 22-year-old was killed when they were hit by a bridge beam. The beams of the bridge at Großbeerenstraße street are 20 to 30 centimetres above the roof of the train. The train went over the bridge and came into the next station which was Möckernbrücke. A person waiting on the platform discovered the lifeless body on top of the train.

Brazil – Fortaleza Injured Hit by train ? A person was riding on a train when they fell off and a train ran over their leg.The person sustained injuries resulting in one of his legs needing to be amputated.

5 October 2016 United States – New York Died Hit by train 25 A 25-year-old, travelling with another person, was moving between subway cars when he attempted to climb on top of one, was clipped by an object, fell down and was subsequently killed.

24 November 2016 Australia – Melbourne Injured Jumped into river 20s A person in their 20s was on a train travelling between Hawthorn and Burnley stations. The person jumped from the train and into the Yarra River. Their injuries included chest and foot injuries and they were admitted to hospital in a serious condition.

3 December 2016 United States – New York Died Hit by Train 31 A 31-year-old, was riding inside a train when he threw his bookbag down, stepped out of the carriage and then began climbing up the side of the train. While inside a tunnel the person was struck by a pillar, fell off the train and was subsequently decapitated. The incident occurred in a tunnel north of the West 4th Street station in Greenwich Village.

7 December 2016 United States – New York Died Hit by train 14 A 14-year-old was riding in between the carriages of a train with a friend when they attempted to jump onto the platform. They missed the platform and landed on the track bed. As the train moved down the line it rolled over the person. They were rushed to hospital where they were pronounced dead.

17 February 2017 Italy – Liguria – Ventimiglia Died Electrocuted 20s Electrical problems were discovered on a train traveling from Ventimiglia Italy to Cannes-La Bocca train station in France. The passengers got off the train and the train was then towed to a maintenance centre. The body of a person was discovered on the roof of the train. It has been reported that "since the day of the tragedy, everything suggests that the victim is a young migrant”’’ and that they were on the roof of the train so that they could “cross the border between France and Italy.”[100]

26 February 2017 United States – New York Died Hit by train 30s A person in their 30s was riding on the top of a train when they fell near Tremont station and the rear end of the train ran over him, killing him.

27 February 2017 Switzerland – Ticino – Chiasso Died Electrocuted 20 A person, 20, was on a train that was travelling from Milan to Bellinzona. The person was electrocuted on the roof of the train after it left Chiasso railway station. People inside the train reported seeing sparks and hearing loud noises. When people arrived at the Balerno train station and attended to the man they found that he had died. It was reported that "The identification would have occurred by comparing a photograph of the young man with the face of the migrant... The photograph had been taken in a center of southern Italy, where he had arrived following the landing on the southern coasts of the nearby peninsula. The boy would have tried several times to enter France via Ventimiglia, the theatre in the past few days of a similar event."[106]

6 May 2017 Brazil – São Paulo Injured Electrocuted 18 An 18-year-old, received 2nd and 3rd degree burns after he made contact with overhead train power lines. Pereira was with friends at Palmeiras-Barra train station. It was reported that when with his friends Pereira spoke of a desire to go train surfing. He climbed up on top of the train and his body made contact with the power lines. Their legs had caught on fire following the electric shock he received. He was airlifted to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery.

8 June 2017 Russia – Moscow Died Unconfirmed 30s A person, estimated to be around 30, climbed onto the back of a train at Bratislavskaya station. They held onto a mirror attempting to ride to the next station. While riding on the train they received a fracture to the base of their skull. Paramedics who arrived at the scene confirmed the persons death.

19 September 2017 United States – New York Injured Hit by object 13 A 13-year-old climbed onto the outside of a train at Neptune Avenue and began riding on it until he jumped off and hit the "Do not enter" sign at the end of the platform. They sustained injuries including ruptured testicles, cuts to his face and bruises to his stomach.

24 October 2017 France – Paris Died Hit by object 16 At Bir-Hakeim a person heard a loud noise and then saw a 16 year-old person lying down on the roof of the train. As the train began to move away the person sat up with their back facing the front end of the train. People then began to shout and they were hit by the canopy of the roof of the train station. They fell off the train carriage and onto the tracks and died as a result of the incident.

28 October 2017 France – Paris Injured Fall ? A person in their 20s was on a train at Le Kremlin-Bicêtre metro station. They walked inbetween two carriages of the train and then climbed onto the roof of the train. As the train approached Louis Aragon-Villejuif station the person attempted to climb down from the roof and fell. They received an open head injury and bruises and were taken to hospital in a serious condition.

8 April 2018 Russia – Moscow Oblast – Podrezkovo Died Hit by train 13 A person, 13, was with another person on top of a train travelling on the Tver-Moscow route. At 400 - 500 metres before the Podrezkovo station the person was in between two cars of the train attempting to climb up an object in the shape of a pipe that is attached to one of the cars. As they were doing this they fell under the train and subsequently died.

May 2018 Russia – Moscow Died Unconfirmed A person, 16, was on the roof of a train travelling from Moscow to Nakhabino. They were at one point killed and their body was later found. They had in their possession a video camera and other equipment.

14 May 2018 Russia – Moscow Died Hit by train A person, 15, was with two other people on a train going from Moscow-Kievskaya station to Solnechnaya station. The 15 year old put on some gloves, accessed the intercar space and climbed onto the roof of the train where they were electrocuted. When paramedics arrived at the scene they noted the persons death.

June 2018 Russia – Moscow Died Electrocuted ? A teenager was riding on the top of a train going towards Moscow on the Yaroslavl line. Whilst on top of the train they were electrocuted and killed. Their body was found at Perlovskaya station.

30 June 2018 Canada – British Columbia – Revelstoke Injured Hit by train 25 A person, 25, was riding on the outside of a train car when they fell off and sustained injuries after being hit by a moving train car. They were still conscious and able to talk when help arrived. They received injuries that resulted in full and partial limb amputations.

2019 Russia – Leningrad Died Electrocuted 21 A person, 21, was riding on the roof of a train when they slipped and grabbed overhead power lines. They subsequently fell off the train and then later died before paramedics arrived at the scene.

23 January 2019 South Africa – Cape Town Died Electrocuted 30s A person in their 30s was riding on the roof of a train near Phillipi when they received a fatal electric shock.

5 February 2019 South Africa – Cape Town Died Electrocuted ? In the early hours of the evening, a person riding on the roof of a train suffered a fatal electric shock near Mutual.

21 March 2019 United Kingdom – London Died Electrocuted 27 26 Two people were walking together near Hackney Wick in East London. One was 27 and the other 26. They walked through an open gate at an industrial estate and then went through a hole in the railway track perimeter fence. They climbed up some steps onto a flat-bed container carriage and then from there they were able to jump across to a white cylinder. Photos of the 26-year-old were being taken by the 27-year-old. These photos were taken just before they both received a fatal electric shock from overhead power lines.

July 2019 Russia – Moscow Injured Hit by Train 13 A person, 13, was riding on the outside of a train when they sustained injuries to their hands. It was reported that their hands were severed from their arms.It was also reported that after having received an operation in hospital, the persons hands were re-attached to their arms and the motor function of their hands was restored.

22 September 2019 Germany – Frankfurt Injured Electrocuted 21 A person, 21, climbed onto the roof of an S-Bahn at Frankfurt Central. While the train was traveling ticket inspectors could hear loud sounds on the roof of the train. They exited the train at Taunusanlage and saw a person on fire on the roof. The person then fell off the roof and on to the platform where they were still on fire. In a state of shock the person then got up and began to run away until ticket inspectors were able to catch up with them. They were taken to a hospital in Offenbach, with non-life-threatening injuries including third-degree burns to 25% of their body and broken bones and put into an artificial coma.

23 November 2019 United States – New York Died Hit by object 14 A person, 14, was on the outside of a Manhattan-bound 7 train near the outdoor Queensboro plaza station. It was reported that a metal object situated close to the train struck the person's head as they were travelling past.[150] They were found 20 feet away from the outdoor Queensboro Plaza station. They died as a result of the collision.
