Lizard Squad is a black hat hacking group that first emerged on August 18, 2014. They are known for their use of DDoSing via amplification[1] to take down popular services related to gaming. They identify themselves as "Cyber terrorists labelled as a matter of national security".[2] Lizard Squad believes that "These entities [referring to Microsoft and Sony] spend exponentially far less on the users gaming experience then [sic] they should be."[3] however they also say "And course it's also for the lulz".[4]

Christmas attacks[edit]

Lizard Squad had previously threatened to take down gaming services on Christmas.[19]

On December 24, 2014 (Christmas Eve), Lizard Squad attacked Xbox Live,[20] however their attacks only affected UK servers and Xbox Live was only down for 8 minutes[21] at which point Finest Squad is believed to have been DDoSing members of Lizard Squad to prevent them being able to attack Xbox Live.[22] At 3:03PM Finest Squad announced that Lizard Squad had been taken offline saying "Finest Squad on your connections. #Offline @LizardMafia".[23] After this, Lizard Squad decided to attack PlayStation Network. PlayStation Network was down for approximately 8 minutes.[24]

On December 25, 2014 (Christmas Day), Lizard Squad once again performed a DDoS attack on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network however, this time they were successful.[25][26]

On December 26, 2014 at 2:00AM Lizard Squad stopped attacking Xbox Live and PlayStation Network after Kim Dotcom offered them 3000 Mega Privacy vouchers in return for a permanent end to their attacks on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network services.[27]

Finest Squad[edit]

On December 3, 2014, a group named 'Finest Squad' appeared with the sole aim of taking out Lizard Squad. On December 19, 2014 Finest Squad posted what was claimed to be a DOX of all seven members of Lizard Squad, however Lizard Squad claimed that the information in the DOX was in fact either forged or already publicly available.[28] saying "None of us were arrested, @FinestSquad was nothing but a few copy-pastes, you guys are pro-hackers. hehehehehe <3"[29]

Bomb threats[edit]

On August 24, 2014, Lizard Squad claimed that plane on which the president of Sony Online Entertainment, John Smedley was flying (American Airlines Flight 362) had explosives on board.[30] American Airlines reacted to this threat immediately, diverting the plane to Phoenix. This event prompted the FBI to open an investigation into Lizard Squad, saying "at this time the FBI is handling this directly"[31]
