He also holds honorary life membership with the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology of South Africa [8] for his contribution to the advancement of the discipline. Further, he is classified as a C2 Rated Researcher with the National Research Foundation in South Africa [9] and is academically associated with the Department of Social Psychology at Goethe University in Germany [10] and the Human Resource Management Department at the University of Twente in the Netherlands [11].

Education and career[edit]

Van Zyl completed high school in 2003 from H.T.S Vereeniging in South Africa[12] and subsequently attended the North-West University. He graduated with a Bachelor in Behavioural Sciences (2008), Honours in Industrial Psychology (2009) and Masters in Industrial Psychology (2010) at the top of his class at the North-West University in South Africa [13][4]. In 2012, under the supervision of Prof. dr. Sebastiaan Rothmann, he successfully defended his PhD Thesis in Positive Organisational Psychology at the North-West University [14].

During his Ph.D process, Van Zyl completed his training and internship in industrial and organisational psychology under Prof. Marius Stander and registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a psychologist (category: industrial)[15]. In 2012, Van Zyl was employed as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Psychology at the University of South Africa and was subsequently promoted to Associate Professor in 2013. At 28, Van Zyl was appointed as the youngest co-editor of the South African Journal of Industrial Psychology and at 29 as the youngest president-elect of the Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa [16]. Van Zyl was then appointed as an Associate Professor at the North-West University where he lead the Optimizing Performance Research programme within the Optentia Research Focus Area (2015 to 2017) [17]. During this time he was recruited as a senior researcher / assistant professor with the Human Resource Management and Positive Psychology and Technology Departments at the University of Twente in the Netherlands [18]. In 2017, Van Zyl resigned from his role as Associate Professor at the North-West University and was subsequently appointed as an Extraordinary Professor in Positive Organisational Psychology with the Optentia Research Focus Area at the same institution.

Currently, Van Zyl holds an Assistant Professorship within the Human Performance Management Department at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands [19]. He is also formally attached to the Department of Social Psychology at Goethe University in Germany [20] and the Human Resource Management Department at the University of Twente in the Netherlands [21] as an external faculty member / associate.

Research focus and scientific contributions[edit]

Van Zyl is an applied positive psychological researcher with a specific focus on the development, implementation and evaluation of positive psychology interventions aimed at the optimisation of human potential.[4] He has published over 35 scientific articles, 6 scientific books, 24 peer-reviewed chapters and 37 conference proceedings on broad topics relating to the measurement and management of positive psychological interventions [22] [23].

His most notable work pertains to the development of the Positive Psychological Coaching framework that provides coaches with a sequential developmental model to aid clients to discover, use and optimse their character strengths and virtues in life and at work[24]. This approach specifically focuses on enhancing what already works well (strengths) rather than trying to correct deviant behaviour or to proverbially 'fix what is wrong'[24]. Development is positioned as a function of enhancing clients' positive states, capabilities and behaviours through Socratic goalsetting and the employment of evidence-based positive psychological tools and techniques during the coaching process[24][25].

Further, Van Zyl provided structured guidelines on the design, development, implementation, interpretation and evaluation of positive psychological interventions[26] [27] [28]. He argued that the effectiveness positive psychological interventions are largely dependent upon poor intervention design, a lack in structure in terms of participant recruitment and retention, flaws in intervention fidelity, and poor evaluation processes/practices[26]. The guidelines provided by Van Zyl and colleagues provided means to standardized the design of positive psychological interventions.[26]

Van Zyl also developed and validated a range of scalable, easy to use, self-administered positive psychological interventions such as discovering the sources of meaning in life through photography [29] [30] and using positive journalling to enhance psychological well-being [31].
