LocName
LocName, an abbreviation of "Location Name", is a web and mobile application. The application allows users to assign a short, personalized name to their address details and physical map coordinates. The saved names are known as "LocNames". This process allows users to share their address details faster than sharing standard address details. Other users can then search for the desired LocName on one of the apps and use GPS navigation to reach it.
LocName uses a new Reverse Geocoding concept to convert map coordinates to simple names that are easy to remember and share.
Use case
Upon entering the app, users are prompted to register a LocName account using email, Facebook, or Google+. The first step thereafter is to register a LocName address. This is the main service provided by LocName. First, users will allow the app to find their location using GPS. Users can manually adjust the location of the pin if it is not exact. Once confirmed, users give that location a personalized name or "LocName". Additional details are optional but serve the purpose of confirming the GPS location with standard address details. This finalizes the creation of the LocName address. Users can create as many LocNames as they please.
Once a LocName is created, several options are available to the user. The user can share the LocName using several mediums, like text, email, or social media. A hyperlink will then be sent that will take the receiver to the LocName's place page. Users can also save a LocName to their favorites list. They can also use GPS navigation to reach the desired LocName address.
As it stands now, LocName uses Google Maps' API for the navigation system of the web version, while the mobile versions use the smartphone's available map application.
History
The idea for the LocName addressing system came to the founder's mind while on a trip to Barcelona. Upon realizing that Google could return many different locations with the same name, they thought that an improved system could allow each of these places to have a unique name. After giving the idea much thought and refinement, they settled on the final idea for LocName to be implemented on the web and mobile platforms.
Upon returning to Egypt, the team developed the first version of the web application for LocName, completed in the summer of 2013.
