DM 3209 or DMBSO 7 was a driving motor car from a London underground standard stock train.[3] Originally built as DM 3209 in 1931 it entered service with London underground.[3] In 1967 the car was moved to the Isle of Wight to act as the motorcar from 485 044.[4][5] As a part of said unit it operated frequent services with British Rail on the Isle of Wight between Ryde and Shanklin. It was withdrawn in the early 1990s and the car was sold back to London underground alongside a number of other standard stock vehicles on the Isle of Wight.[6] The car was stored in Acton works after delivery and it began to fall into disrepair. After Acton works announced they needed the space in which the car and many other Standard Stock cars were stored, it was scrapped.[3][6]
Operations
London Underground
The car was built in 1931 for the Piccadilly line as it needed new trains to serve its extension to Cockfosters. The car was the driving motor for a new 3 car Standard Stock set, It worked alongside CT 5290 and T 7287[7] The Standard Stock vehicles which this car was a part of were withdrawn following the introduction of the 1959 Stock. The complete set which DM 3209 was a part of entered storage before being transported to the Isle of Wight.
Isle of Wight
The unit was delivered to the Isle of Wight on the 19th February 1967 and commenced service on the 9th of March of that same year.[8] Originally it was the DM for 486 034.[8] It continued working alongside the same cars as originally until 1979 when the car was swapped with DM 3041 and was made a part of 485 044. Photos show the unit working with 486 034 in 1978 and 485 044 in 1979.[8][9] This meant it now worked alongside DM 3702, T 5291, and T 7281.[10] T 5291 was eventually replaced with T 7296. The car was given an alternate number upon arrival on the Isle of Wight being labelled as DMBSO 7. In 1985 the Class 486s were converted into 2 car sets and the Class 485s 5 car sets, meaning DM 3209 would now be operating a 5 car set, T 7287 was reunited with DM 3209. In 1988 the unit and car were repainted into Network South East livery and like all class 485s/6s was put under the branding, Ryderail.[9][11] Throughout the late 1980s prior to the arrival of the 483s the car operated frequently alongside the rest of its set as 485s were being used more often than 486s by now and multiple working between the 2 had almost completely ceased.[11][12][13][14]
The car was in storage when 483 001, the first unit meant to replace the class 485s was delivered to Ryde Depot.[15]
Withdrawl
By the 1980s the trains were in poor condition and DM 3209 was no exception the trains needed to be replaced, Network South East deemed that operations of trains such as 485 044 would become economically unfeasible by the early 1990s.[16] So the trains were replaced with class 483s in 1989 and by 1992 this and all other train cars were withdrawn.[17] This particular unit was withdrawn in October 1989.[15][18] Most trains suffered badly from corrosion damage due to the trains running through Ryde Pier which was on the seaside.[19] DM 3209 wasn't too damaged which is why it was picked for preservation.[6]
Preservation
Following 485 044s withdrawal only some cars were preserved. DM 3209 alongside T 7281 and T 7296 were transported to Morden depot for restoration in November 1990.[18] The London Transport Museum opened a depot in Acton in 1999 where a 4 car standard stock vehicle would be placed. Unfortunately of all the cars in Morden, only T 7296 was picked for use in the Standard Stock Exhibit. DM 3209 alongside T 7281 were placed in Acton works on static display where they would remain for a long time. All Standard Stock vehicles that weren't a part of the Exhibit in the main depot were stored there.[6] As a result of their long stay without maintenance or movement and the fact that Acton Works didn't have a roof to shelter the trains, the quality of DM 3209 dropped significantly. By the end of the 2000s the unit was in disrepair and some of the cars had been vandalised with graffiti.[20][6] It was the only remaining car still to be in Network South East livery.[3]
Demise
In 2013 Acton Works announced that they needed the space in which DM 3209 were stored and due to their terrible condition, nobody purchased the car for restoration. The car was stripped of reusable material and then scrapped.[3]
