DM 3701 was a driving motor car from a London underground standard stock train.[3] Built in 1934, it entered service with London Underground.[3] In the sixties, the train in which this car was a part of was withdrawn and the car was preserved. It was stored in Acton Works for decades, but when the works claimed they needed the space in which the car was stored in 2013, the car was scrapped.[3][4]

Operations and Withdrawl

In 1934, for the Piccadilly Line extension to Uxbridge, the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) ordered a batch of 26 motor cars to be mixed with existing Trailers. DM 3701 was one such DM. It and all its 1934 lookalikes were built by Metro-Cammell. As expected for a build of cars specifically for the Piccadilly Line, the train car spent its entire time on the Piccadilly Line. The car and all the other cars that it was joined together with were withdrawn following the introduction of the 1959 stock.

Preservation and Demise

It is unclear whether any of the other cars this train worked with survived, but certainly some did not. DM 3701, on the other hand, was preserved. It was moved to different locations over time but was moved to Acton Works in 1983, and it was left there to deteriorate with few restoration attempts. In 2013, Acton Works announced they needed the space in which the car and 7 other standard stock vehicles were located.[3] DM 3690 was scrapped on the 6th of June 2013.[3]

Reuse of the name DM 3701

A 1983 stock vehicle was also given the name DM 3701; it was the car leading the Baker Street to Ealing Broadway Railtour in 1984.[5]
