The Los Zetas-La Familia Michoacana was a turf war in the state of Michoacan de Ocampo from January 6, 2004 to 2010. The war started on Jan.6, 2004 when at 15:20 members from the Gulf Cartel and La Familia Michoacana dressed up as soldiers from the Mexican Army broke into the CERESO APATZINGAN prison in the municipality of Apatzingan to free members from Los Zetas who at the time were the enforcer group for the Gulf Cartel. Shortly after the breakout, Carlos Rosales Mendoza was arrested, and responsibility of the Familia Cartel relied on Nazario Moreno. He then later declared war on the Zetas and Gulf Cartels and declared Michoacán free from any outside criminal groups. The events later led to the start of the Mexican Drug War and Operation Michoacán. That later led to events like the Morelia grenade attacks and the creation of the Knights Templar Cartel
