Louis Barry Rosenberg is an American scientist, inventor, writer, and entrepreneur. He researches augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. Rosenberg founded the Immersion Corporation and Unanimous A.I. in 1993 and 2014 respectively. He was the Cotchett Endowed Professor of Educational Technology at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo from 2005 to 2011. Rosenberg was the screenwriter of the 2009 romantic comedy film, Lab Rats.

Louis Rosenberg earned a B.S. (1991), M.S. (1993), and Ph.D. (1994) in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.[1] His dissertation was titled, Virtual fixtures: perceptual overlays enhance operator performance in telepresence tasks.[2] Larry John Leifer was his doctoral adviser.[1][2] Since 1993, Rosenberg has founded a number of technology startups related to virtual and augmented reality, as well as artificial intelligence. His first venture was Immersion Corporation, founded in 1993, where he also served as CEO until 2000. The company went public in 1999, on NASDAQ.[1][3] According to Bloomberg, “Rosenberg turned entrepreneur while still pursuing his doctorate, raising $60,000 in 1993 from friends and family to start Immersion.”[4] In 1999, Logitech released the first haptic-enabled computer mouse using FEELit technology developed by Rosenberg and other researchers at Immersion Corporation.[5][6][7]
Rosenberg conducted early research into virtual and augmented reality at NASA's Ames Research Center and at the Air Force Research Laboratory, developing the Virtual Fixtures platform, one of the first prototype augmented reality systems to enable human subjects to interact with mixed reality of real and virtual objects.[3][7][8][9]
Career and research[edit]
From 2005 to 2011,[citation needed] Rosenberg was an education technology and engineering professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly).[10] He was the Cotchett Endowed Professor of Educational Technology.[11] He researched a digital media platform for K–12 learning.[11][12]
Starting in 2014, Rosenberg began developing a new area of AI research called Artificial Swarm Intelligence (or Swarm AI) aimed at amplifying the intelligence of human groups using AI algorithms modeled on biological swarms.[13][14][15][16][17] In 2014, Rosenberg founded Unanimous A.I., an artificial intelligence company.[18][13][19] Rosenberg has served as the company's CEO since the company was founded.[13]
From 2018 to 2020, Rosenberg collaborated with researchers at Stanford University School of Medicine on a National Science Foundation funded study conducted on groups of radiologists, which was published in Nature Digital Medicine on "Human–machine partnership with artificial intelligence for chest radiograph diagnosis", related to the symbiosis of human experts and AI deep learning algorithms.[20][21][22][23] Rosenberg, in collaboration with researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, conducted studies applying "Swarm AI" technology for creating "hive minds" of financial analysts for equity markets.[24][21]
Rosenberg's research has focused on using AI algorithms modeled on biological swarms to support group decision-making in various fields including forecasting, estimation, and diagnosis.[14][15][13]
Writing[edit]
In 2008, Rosenberg graduated from the Professional Program in Screenwriting at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.[25] In 2009, Rosenberg wrote the screenplay for the short romantic comedy film Lab Rats directed by Sam Washington. The short won several awards, including at the Moondance International Film Festival and the Ventura Film Festival.[26][11] By 2011, Rosenberg was a screenwriter for his company Outland Pictures.[27] Rosenberg also wrote a feature film screenplay entitled The Manuscript in collaboration with another writer, Joe Rosenbaum, which was sold in 2018 for screen adaptation.[28][29]
Rosenberg is the author of a series of graphic novels on artificial intelligence, transhumanism and a dystopian future.[30][25][31]
